  1. Wellington has a bad rep for it's 3 Cornered Jacks. Stay on the hard stuff.Did a touch and go there a couple of years back but can't remember using the radio!!!

I am based at Wellington(Brooklands) and do over 200 landings and take offs per year and have many friends fly in to visit and we don't have a problem with 3 corner jacks. I am not saying There are no 3 corner jacks(actually cow throp ) on the property of 178acres but the runways ,taxi ways and areas on the side are clean.

  3. I agree ,I have a 3 blade Patroney pro on my 6cyl Jab done 250 hrs with the prop and would not swap back to a wooden prop. Also fitted one to my brothers Lightning 150 hours the only maintenance required so far on both props was a clean and polish. I helped a friend fit a 2 blade one to his 4 cyl,it performs better than the Jab prop and smoother. The downside of these props is that they are weigh more.

  4. who dat? a beautifull flybye in a jabi monday, just skimming the dirt..awesome,,not sure how a nose wheel would handle at the moment (few rocks),will lay some new dirt in next few weeks but all you tail draggers No worries,,heres a vid of me flying the Thruster to Peake and landing on my new runway at Pa's1 way in 1 way out and between trees 240 meters grass easy but lil bounce or 2.lol.....real spot landing...054_no_no_no.gif.950345b863e0f6a5a1b13784a465a8c4.gif[Hi flyerme, the jab doing the near touch and go was me, the reason I did not land is I was not sure of the surface of your runway, looked like soft sand. The length did not worry me and now that you have rolled and graded it I will land on your strip next time I'm up your way and you are home.

  5. G'day Helmut, Great to hear from you again. I think you might have a typo above in you left a zero off your climb rate - 2,000 ft/min? I was over your way nearly 12 months back to talk to Dennis B about a Lightning and gave you a ring but couldn't raise you. Next time . . .Alan,

Helmut is a very experienced professional and has done an incredible amount of engineering work to achieve these results. It is a real pity that Jab just don't want to know about it.

You are correct Rod,evenwith 3cyl running I should achieve 200ft/min, must have been half asleap when I wrote it.

It would have been good to catch up, I might make it to Temora next year. I am currently setting up the engine in my freinds new nearly completed Lightning , this will have electronic fuel and spark control . After I get the spark maps set up I and trim the fuel maps accordingly I expect to get more improvement to fuel economy in cruise.

    Cheers Helmut.

  6. I live in SA and never heard of this one Don, more information please.Alan.

I have been running EFI on my Jabiru for 7 years(400hours) with no problems. My climb rate full fuel and 90Kg pilot is 200ft/min. At 125 kn I use 15-17lt/hour. There are also a 3 other Jab 6 engines I have set up EFI on. One has 200+ hours , one 200+ and the other 140 hours without problems.

The only problem I have had is that the Jab alternator is marginal at idle & up to 1200RPM, the EFI uses 2amps more than the alernator is making, it breaks even at 1400RPM. I have now fitted a 45AMP alternator which ahas fixed all my cahrging problems, the engine also idles better and appears to have more power due to the alternator not charging at max all the time and dumping it to earth like the jab alernator.

    Cheers Helmut.

  7. I am a firm believer in changing the oil at 25 hours and filter at 50 hours. The 2200 Jab SK (2nd jab kit produced) which I built and now owned by my brother did 1250 hours on the last engine before requiring a top end overhaul. I ran it in on aeroshell 15W/50 as I do with all my Jab engines none have oil usage problems. The 2200 has now done another 250+ hours since top end overhaul and running sweetly.

    Cheers Helmut.

  8. Don,

if you use company fuel stations as your supply of fuel I have never had a problem with quality. In my past life managing the engine development area I quoted and won a contract to test12 evo race engines for Mitsubishi Japan. Their fuel requirement was 100 RON and BP Ultimate was the only fuel that met their specification. We always took sampes and had them annalysed at every fill and the quality was always good. There is also another advantage using mogas as it gets blended every few weeks to compensate for the seasonal changes in temperature, which will give better starting in the cold temperatures.

  9. Jabiru took the RPM signal of one coil for the tacho on one of their models some time ago, I am sure thats your problem not a major problem as you should hear the engine run rough during mag check. Can be changed by adding a pick up and plates to flywheel and reset the tacho.

    Cheers Helmut.

  10. Thanks Howard,if you want to build a kit aircraft then do it. I have built 3 kit aircraft in the last 12 years, not because I would rather build then fly just the opposite I would sooner fly then build. Building is also enjoyable especially if you have a plane to fly while building which was the case with me. It is also not that difficult it just takes perserverance like eating a elephant one bite at a time.

    Cheers Helmut.

  11. Hi Rob,the SP6 is basically the same aircraft as a 120 with a 6 cyl engine and 85liter fuel tank. They are a beautiful aircraft to fly plenty of take off power a easy 120kn cruise and excellent fuel economy if you want to slow down a bit.

    Cheers Helmut.

  12. Thanks guys , we were pleased with the end result and had a few ales to celebrate. The next celebration will be when the 25 hours are flown off and all the fine tuning completed.

    Cheers Helmut.

PS I tried to set up a picture story of the build but could not get it to work in this forum.

  13. I have attached the photos and a copy of the text I sent to the lightning group in the USA at the completion of building my brothers lightning.

"We have finally finished this lightning kit after two and a half years (1600hrs) of work. There was a lot of frustration but also a lot of pleasure and the end result was very pleasing. The kit belongs to my brother John who did not have the confidence to build, so I did the technical side of the work and my brother the paint work and trimming. The reason for the extended build time was my limited time at my brothers place as he lives three and a half hours drive from my place and we did all the work ourselves with no outside help. I have built two Jabiru kits before which still belong to our family and are used frequently.

I fitted a voyager EFIS into the panel and the engine is fitted with electronic fuel injection using a Haltech ECU with a Jenvey trottle body and 2 RX 7 injectors. This is the same set up I fitted to my Jabiru when I built it and it has run 350hours without trouble. We are currently conducting high speed taxi tests to get used to the toe brakes. then into the test flying."

Since I wrote the article my brother has completed 6 hours of test flying .

Engine temps are all in the green. With the current prop pitch setting which I left on the fine side to give him a better climb rate while he is getteng used to the lightning ;at 2600RPM is 110Kn, at 2800RPM is 120Kn, at 3100RPM is 140KN.

    Cheers Helmut.

  14. The problem with repairing the cracks is that they will appear again because the windscreen sits on a bed of sealastic and held in by screws. There will always be some slight flexing movement. The best way to hide the cracks is to use white viynal tape same stuff as used for the striping. A pernament fix would be to remove it and fibre flock it in.

    Cheers Helmut.
