  1. Pantyhose is the answer. Years ago we had been in a stock camp, mustering every day for weeks, winter time, with bleak dry weather. One night , after a particularly hard day, a lot of galloping, a young bloke asked me if my legs were sore. I said yes they were a bit chaffed ,why. He pulled up the leg of his jeans and he had a blister , from the bottom of his calf to his knee. For people that have,t ridden horses , riding toey horses chasing toey cattle over rough country ,you have to ride fairly tight. Grip with your knees. If you happen to get sweat from your horse on your trouser legs , makes it worse ,feels like you are rubbing your legs on concrete . Well, somehow I sent a message back to my wife , asking to possibly send something up for him to put on his leg, when along with some tucker and fresh dogs, is a bag with a couple of packets of brand new pantyhose , and a note saying try these, turned up. I did keep my promise , not to tell anyone, but after 35 years , I think he would laugh about it

Actually I want on a multi-day horse riding trip once. Recommend attire for all sexes included pantyhose. I thought they were joking, and as a result had much more leg and bum pain than others...

  2. sorry, i should have said why to check that stuff. Most often those sounds of noise issues come about due to a grounding problem. Coax connectors are generally pretty reliable, however they can fail, particularly in high vibration environments. I said the power filter may help, but if its a ground issue then basically you have one (or more) part of the electrical system using a ground with a different voltage on it to the rest of the system. The power filter doesn't really address that problem, but if the underlying issue is dodgy power filtering in your radio, it might alleviate the issue a bit.

    anyway, good luck.

  3. Check the earth shield on the coax hasn't come loose at either the connector at the back of the radio or at the antenna mount. You can use a multimeter to check that out

Check the power connections to the radio - in particular make sure the ground connector is clean and making good contact.

Try adding a power filter to the line coming to the radio, which may help a bit.

  4. meh. read the consumer protection laws in your state, or check out the trade practices act. Just let them (Icon) know that the contract isn't valid in Australia and you need one that is. Call your local consumer protection agency and get a reference number from them to supply Icon with - if your still willing to buy from a company that behaves like this.

  5. Is there an example of a police check doing some good? I never heard of it and I would feel better about the cost of our instructors checks if I knew that it did some good somewhere.I don't even know what you have to do to fail the check. Do you need to have a record of sexual assaults? Or just being on a suspect list? Or would being critical of CASA do it ?

Being convicted of a crime, basically. It is a little more complicated than that, particularly if you deal with children or at-risk people (asylum seekers etc), and for certain other types of jobs. Check out the spent conviction scheme for info that matter (http://www.afp.gov.au/what-we-do/police-checks/spent-convictions-scheme). Being a suspect should be insufficient, as nothing has yet been proved against you.

I'm not sure what the police are allowed to do with the information provided to them as part of the check. In theory it should only be used for the intended purpose (privacy act), but as I haven't gone looking for the statement which says what they consider the purpose to be 033_scratching_head.gif.b541836ec2811b6655a8e435f4c1b53a.gif

Oh, I've heard of a sex offender being refused a job as a teacher. QLD I think...

  6. I made an avr based cht gauge a while back, never actually put it in an aircraft though. I've lost the schematic of the final version, sorry.

Use a decent regulated power supply, a precision voltage reference for your AREF and a proper instrumentation amp (ideally a temperature compensated thermocouple amplifier) and you can get some pretty good accuracy. EMI can be a problem in an auto/aircraft install.

If you want to experiment check out ebay etc. An arduino Nano will cost you about $3 or so.

  7. Frankly FT I'm starting to think you are nothing but a CASA plant...you have failed to identify yourself, you seem to have an unusual interest in the RAA but your not an RAA member, you don't fly....so can you give me one good reason why the lot of us shouldn't just put you on their 'ignore' list and stop putting up with your continuous dribble...??

    Too late.

  8. I recently had to go through the customs process for an >$1k purchase from overseas. On the whole, the customs people were very helpful, however when it came to identifying the correct tariff code I was at a loss. The item I'd purchased could have sort of fit a number of categories. There is a support service customs provides to assist with this process, but there are long wait times before they can assist (i think 10 working days). I ended up picking a code that looked right if I squinted a bit. Customs was fine with that in the end, but given the fines for screwing it up.....

I made some inquiries around the traps after that, as the tariff thing was at odds with the otherwise excellent service I'd received from customs. Apparently it was due to the government's APS staff cuts program, and it never used to be like that.

Anyway, if customs has to manage the GST on otherseas purchases thing it will be a complete nightmare, especially with the creative invoicing that seems to occur when buying stuff from china. My most recent purchase (small cutting bits for my CNC machine), which ran to all of $3, was described on the invoice as "Gift - Cosmetics" and had the $US price but didn't indicate the currency.

I'm not sure the charging GST for online purchases thing will help our local retailers out much. For all of my recent online purchases even a 100% GST would have worked out cheaper than the local purchase. For the purchase above, which was for 10 cutting bits, If I was charged a GST of $3 I'd still have a $8 saving over the cost of a single cutter in the same size/quality from the local store.

  9. I had to go looking, and found a reference to it in the US regs. I havn't found the AUS or UK regs yet, but I suspect they are the same.

87.131 defines the power and emissions standards:

    http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=aa7500faff2a901aa69fb933fbec0f83&mc=true&node=pt47.5.87&rgn=div5#sp47.5.87.d

Unless I'm reading it wrong (probably), our VHF aircraft comms is limited to 55 Watts.

I'd recommend looking that up before designing and building a radio for it.

  10. This is governed by the listening devices act, which varies state to state. Essentially though, if one party advises that the conversation is being recorded that is sufficient. Note that in most states, consent is not required - just advise.

I've found its often helpful to have notes - name, time of call, time of stupid statement etc. Once you start trotting that out they normally back down.

  11. if you want to put together some radials to act as a ground plane for the antenna to work against you could try adhesive copper tape from bunnings or masters. Look in the garden section for barrier tape intended to stop slugs (apparantly they don't like to cross copper).

Its about $7 a roll, and its cheaper at Masters than Bunnings (Bunnings said they won't price match as they are different brands, despite all the dimensions being the same).

  12. hmm..

well, some basic thinking exercises should be tried for most people on 1. If you think about it what you'll probably get to is that welfare payments are a saftey net so that the unfortunate (due to circumstance or just age) members of society don't actually need to break into your house and steal your shit in order to live. That gives them time to get back on their feet, or grow old(er) and die. either way, its cheaper than prison.

On 2. there is no reason why 3d printers need to make hollow objects, and its normally only done as either a cost or weight saving measure. Again, if you apply some basic thinking to the issue, you'd realise that the extruders on most 3d printers are capable of extruding hot excrement, instead of just plastic, and that would make a much more appropriate filling for a 3d model of a politition of pretty much any persuasion.

    4. well, that is just racist, and to me it also isn't funny. There are plenty of other terrorist groups in the world, and some of them arn't even remotely motivated by religion (FARC would be a reasonable example). Some of the other groups, such as the KKK or the AAI use religion as a motivating factor, however they arn't islamic. It isn't actually muslims that are the issue...

    5. just a restatement of one, with "I'm allowed to get welfare, but nobody else is" tacked on, because whoever wrote it in the first place suddenly realised what would happen to them if they had a small at-fault accident, lost their job and got sued. or if they got old. or if their kids can't find a job...

anyway, because this is a humour forum, and I realise that there is no way you'll change your minds:

The night after the Flying Club Christmas Party, I invited a couple of my friends over to ask them what happenned to them last night. They all seemed sure that their experiences were just terrible. So I went up to my friend Bob, and asked him what happenned.

He said, "Last night, I got so drunk that I couldn't even walk straight. When I got home I was so drunk that I blew chunks."

"That is nothing," my friend Todd said. "Last night I was really drunk, and while I was driving home, I got pulled over for D.U.I. Now I am going to have my license suspended."

"That is nothing at all," said my friend Larry. "Last night I was so drunk when I walked in my house that I ended up in the wrong bed. I thought I was sleeping with my wife, but I was actually sleeping with the Nanny. My wife caught me in bed and kicked me out of the house."

Everyone was shocked at that, except for Bob.

He said, "Guys, I don't think you understand. Chunks is my dog!"

  13. hmm.. are they still doing parachute training out of the ex-school?

For the original poster I highly recommend getting in touch with Teraya at Goulburn Aviation, which is the other school. Private hires are available and she and her instructors provide high quality training for both RA-Aus and GA. Its a very friendly community there too. Just wish I could get there more often, personally.
