  1. Heya Mike.. your note to :"throw it away" ..

    Are you for real Mike..

Time to write the truth about trikes in Australia.

Never were you by my side creating the HGFA CFI Master System Manual.. buddy.

Mr. Fredrick Hogarth (RIP) was very instrumental in the evolution of legality for us trikers.

Do you really know the story.. incl. John Goodrich, John Fack, and others of the time.

Yes, agree you did ,,place much effort in the beginning, did you ever complete the task?

    No.

    My interpretation of events..

1984 trike post, simple beginnings, mega task to be legal, somebody has a job to do!!

CAA.. sport aviation rules of the time... not easy to navigate, or be accepted as we fly today.

Australia - the only place in the world where you decide to be either HGFA or RAA,,.. trike pilots..!??

Answer that one.. double dipping on every level.. costing us trikers to fly the skies of Oz..

Anyway, life goes on.. be good to take the covers OFF the Australian Weight-Shift Aircraft World... in 2017.

Fact: we have the highest fatality record on the planet for triker deaths!

Do the research to confirm over 120 deaths, serious accidents, aircraft failure since 1982...

So how you living Mike, long time no speak... have fond memories we shared down south,,!

Flying trikes today is far from the the 80's..

If you feel you missed recognition in effort.. we have much to to discuss.

Now, 2017, few trike pilots, other pilots and certain top admin officers..

Don't ~ REALY know where trikes began or evolved factually! .

    It's a good story..

..sadly many trikers, incl. double fatalities.. over the years (incl. CFI's) are now DEAD...

.. CFI's - Joe Scott, Andrew Humphries, Paul Hanson, John Cresswell.. too many have been sadly lost ..

A majority of accidents... (past 2 decades) replicate similarity on many levels..similar Coronial reports.

No apology to these words in honesty.!

If you want to shake the cloud... let's do it..

No politics, no regrets, no shame, only the facts.. proven with evidence in fact.!

    Game on.. The Space Between..

Now is the time to unfold the hidden secrets of our true Australian Microlight Industry...

.. an unfair playground for sport aviators,,, !

Respectfully, our priority is to improve the Aussie triker statistics in FLIGHT SAFETY.

PS. Thankyou for your efforts way back..

Although, you did not make it happen to the full extent the sport is today.

Accept my thank you as an industry friend.

    Safe flights.,

  2. The reason to buy and fly any sport aircraft primarily evolves from evidence of manufacturing excellence with recognition by Aviation Authority.

  3. I think the post has deteriorated into a personal opionions forum and has lost the original meaning. If the discussion is to continue lets move it to the weightshift page and discuss it there and leave this one to just the facts and the memory of two special people who are sadly missed.

The facts and memories are very personal - the original meaning is two dads are not with us now or their families this Christmas or any other day bro....

I am confident Crezzi would appreciate anything we wish to express fairly about why he now flies with the angels.. moving to the weightshift page does not change the reality.

For too many years we have concerns of politically correct, pushing our own wheel-barrow or litigation from comment!

If you don't like the heat, get off the fire.

  4. That trike is an Air Creation Tanarg, which is not really relevant to the cause of many of these accidents IMHO.The trike is fitted with an Evolution Trikes wing, not an option offered by A.C, that in itself is not the problem either.

Where the problem is, the wing is a small fast wing, ( around 12 sqm ). Many pilots with lots of experience, come unstuck because they have been trained and are familiar with the larger wings, and where they have been able to get away with inputting large bank angles at low speed without coordinating the turn, the new generation wings will bite them, due to the higher wing loading.

What is needed, is training with an instructor experienced with the new gen wings, and practice, practice, practice at recovery from a spiral dive (demonstrated beautifully by Henry in the back seat). The inputs need to be instinctive, because where the above scenario is most likely to happen is low altitude where you don't have time for the "oh **** what is it I do here again" moment.

I am not in anyway suggesting that this is relevant to the accident being discussed here, and it is only my personal opinion. ( I am not an instructor)

The combination of wing and trike is an absolute unknown.. not flight testing or flight manuals to prove anything is correct or safe with this aircraft..!

  5. Alf (post #145) I agree wholeheartedly but the items in this list I would see as something that every pilot should be considering or adhering to every-time he flys. Certainly not everyone does, we know that and many a sorry outcome has occurred during the execution of something perhaps a little silly or through lack of understanding (lets say about the weather conditions or similar).Going back to Chris's post (#143) I think this is hitting the mark. This is bigger picture stuff. So in general if we want to lead the way and improve the safety of our sport, and indeed promote it with pride then step 1 for me has to be pulling out all the stops to identify the 'true' cause of accidents. And as Chris points out not the generic 'loss of control and collision with terrain'! yes we know that and it hurts. The details of of why, as best as can be determined are our first step.

The way IMHO that we are going to be able to identify this properly or at least have the best chance of this is to have industry leaders taking part, yes the Manufacturers (or representatives of) & guys like some of you on here that have many many years of experience that would have invaluable knowledge, as well as some of the more respected CFIs around the country, (we all have them in our respective states), you get the picture. I'm not saying that it would be easy nor that there will always be a true cause found but it still needs to be given its best shot.

This information needs to be readily available to industry as a whole regardless of whether it was an RaAus, HGFA or any other organisation. Only once we are developing a clear picture (and working as a whole together) of this can we then look back into the root causes, it may mean changes to the Training Syllabus, there may be changes required that some people will not like but at the end of the day if it is made to improve something that is identified as a way to improve the current record then it needs to be implemented.

We have to look at the bigger picture and we have to start at step 1 otherwise it becomes too big a mountain to climb.

Sorry if I am seen to rant a little, but I have been involved now with WM for only just over 2 years having come over from a PPL in GA. I think it is a great pastime however the list of accidents, incidents and fatalities in the that last 2 + years is to me unacceptable.

Skeptic36, great points by the way.....

    Craig

    Yes Dinga... step one!

Lets not get confused/bogged or off track with all the pilot maybeeessss!

It is the time to address the particular - aircraft type/model/similarities/certification and the facts of the reason/cause of these tragic events that may have been preventable, lets stop acting like emus with our heads in the sand. I have been flying 45 years now, thirteen thousand hours and I am disgusted for the last time about a sport I truly love.

I have experienced problems with certain machines in the past and it is still happening.. why?

Australia has standards but not aerodynamic testing standards equal to other countries!

Fact: A hang glider manufacturers need to pitch test wings since 1984isH...

Why do we not have appropriate repeatable aerodynamic flexwing stability requirements for the two seat rocket ships we fly today that are manufactured in Australia.?

Air Creation and P&M Aviation both comply with DULV or similar Aerodynamic Pitching Testing Standards.. that's why I only fly these machines today.

No apology.. i said this years ago in another post for another fatal accident!

Nothing has changed, only more dead trike friends.. what tha!

  6. ..ever wondered why any Directors of Airborne Australia are not involved ..; with kind reply to our postings here at RF.com ??

After all, so many AA trike pilots have left us flying their machines, with respectful experience and wisdom...

ONLY.. to dissolve into an imperative result.. answer - Simple Pilot Error... or/maybe.. Mis-Adventure.. resulting in death.!

Are we for REAL.. my gut is getting personal reflections of too many.. for NO real REASON.

Time to break the mystic protective mold.. on triking in Australia - the future in triking Oz - 2017.

Trusting final results.. ASTB, CASA, RA-Aus a & the Coroner Report.. for JC.. & many others..

.. Australia could represent a BENCHMARK in triking sport aviation SAFETY .. as it WAS,..!

Sadly, disgustingly and not at all acceptable.. we display poor BENCHMARK STANDARDS, in microlight safety - globally...!

No apology in this message.. only truth of now.

Time to change protocol in our industry of flying trikes for FUN...!

  7. Today.. hit Google search world for info about trike accidents/deaths globally.

..mmm, library days are over - learnt heaps, feelings jolted and emotions spilled - all confirming my passion to fly safely.

Facebook memo in respect to my aviator friend - John Cresswell & also Jason Caswell.

We aussie trikers MUST.. re-ignite the fun sport of trike flying in 2017.

Our current safety record is "Bollocks"; as Crezzi's angels command my hands.!

    Excellence in Safety

    Sport Aviation Transparency in Australia:

    1. CASA Acceptable (CAO-95.32) aircraft manufacturing standards with NAA recognition.

    2. Aerodynamic Wing Stability Testing - German DULV or similar acceptable procedures.

    3. Timely reliable Accident Reporting methods by Authorities.

    4. Pilot Command Ability Competency Training - AIRCRAFT TYPE Compliant / Wing Design & Performance Handling

    5. Best Practice Instruction Methods + Aircraft Design = Safer Trike Flying

  8. Post #108... two good family men are sadly not with us anymore - trike pilots of Australia.

Crezzi and I flew together way back at Rutherford Aerodrome.. in the '80s, so he may qualify to fly trikes in Australia.

.. it saddens me deeply for all (150 plus) lost lives in trikes across Australia since 1982... few will understand.

My thoughts & prayers will be with all, come Saturday 10 December to celebrate a true aviator, father and good soul.

An uncomfortable message is appearing in just.. 107 posts.!

Crezzi.. does not need to hear negative verbal aroma about a sport as he rests with the angels.

John loved triking... lets make it safer than it all ready is today.

Find the reason, solve the problem.. do lots more triking.!

The RAA - Ian Hodgson Memerial Trophy, is in recognition of the first trike tumble fatality at Coleambally - I was there.

Time to create.. the John Cresswell Award.. Excellence in Flight Safety..

Providing we receive transparent reliable evidence into prevention of triking accidents.

My deepest respective condolences to the families of Jason Caswell at this tough moment.

There is so much more to this accident, upon a history of lost Aussie trikers, it disgust me beyond anything.

Time to create another post for resolve.!

Rest in Peace ~ John & Jason

  9. Yes, sad news... Crezzi was a trike pilot & friend from many, many years ago! Sad news.. for the fire fighter, Jason Caswell.

Both fine gentleman with wives, children, dreams and aspirations.

Sad news, these men have their lives taken in another trike accident.. in Australia.

As a pioneer to triking since 1972, today I am absolutely ashamed, disgusted and very sad to be an Australian trike pilot.

Fact: We Aussies have the highest accident/death rate for triking in the world... why, how and which aircraft contribute to this fact.

It is not ALL human factors... over 100 fatalities since 1982... no apology for my statements here!

Today, I flew from Yarrawonga to Mt Beauty, 6 people, 3 trikes, amazing fun, awesome memories..

A mix of smooth air, mountain air and strong SW gusty winds, all with safe departures, wise navigation and safe landings.

So, why are good experienced pilots with passengers, dying living the passion to fly trikes on a day we are all safe..!??

Yes, trikes are safe, like most well engineered sport aircraft we choose to fly these days.

The question, which type/model trike is involved the majority of trikers killed since 1982.

If you have the correct answer, you may understand why the triking industry is dying in Australia.

No politics - just true reason.

    Sad news.

God bless the families suffering loss of loved ones to their family, at this tragic time.

    Amen

  10. John.. read many of your writings for longer than I can remember.. always directly driven by safety!

Fatalities.. 29 over 29. Not a good image by any standard of safety on the global platform for sport aviation.

Australia.. a land of freedom, many aviational rules/regulations with a sad fatality record for our sport.

Good to see many comments in this post.. some on track to John's real thread.. some delve into another area.

1974 at fifteen, entered the underground coal mining industry apprentice fitter, kite flying, hang gliding as a sport.

IMHO: Miners at the face.. DID change the current industry (in ref: OH&S - professional analysis management.. crap)

The true respect for unit crew over two decades in the mines has given me many attributes for life... and to be reliably safe.

.. story.. May 2015 - RAA Sport Pilot.. Being Reliable.

Agree absolute with Frank's post, to grow safely into future years, we must all consider the present Culture, Attitude, Airmanship and Professionalism.

Can we represent a proactive result to improve, evolve and reflect an industry of pure best effort practices in sport aviation safety - on a global stadium.

    The challenge begins now..

John, do you know ?: How many trike accidents occurred within the 29 months to make us so dangerous.. compared to other aircraft configurations?

Would it be possible to colate statistics of trike accident reports to determine possible similarities ie: trike type, model, or weather, any pilot ability experience skills.

Lets make it safer.. so only the 2% of idiots are the ones we need to educate to fly safe.

..combine this QCS practice method with a DULV Pitch Test Report... = ultimately a safer aircraft.

  12. .. calculator checks.. done!

33 years.. 3.3 deaths per year.. remarkable number really!

As stated, I do stand to be corrected.. no attack intended upon anyone, just WHY..!

Looking forward to know EXACTLY the number of trike deaths in Australia since 1982.???

Surely, we have (CAO 95.32) .. two Governing Sport Aviation Bodies, (RAA & HGFA) .. collating records, incl.,, CASA, ATSB.. Coronial & Police Reports,, the REAL information is available.

There is an answer to this simple question.

    How many..? WHY..?!

Appreciation to anyone out there, to apply the efforts for us to know the answer to this one..?

I love flying flexwings,.. have done since 1974, kites, hang gliders and trikes.. for 14,000 flight hrs.

  13. Check that.. Have archives for 36 fatal accidents as HGFA National Coach for Coronial Inquiry Reports.. up to about 1990.. been there done that.

Silence is good for the soul.. been quietly achieving aviation for 45 years now.. to have my friends leave this world with so much to offer, and kids without..

Your call mate.. appreciate your reply.

Investigate and offer us your valuable insight to.. - HOW many FATAL trike crashes in Australia since 1982..?

Thanks a bunch for those lost to a tragic accident in triking.

  14. The answer to flexwing flight stability safety.. repeatable, reliable, with reason.

In Germany - the world renown, DULV Pitch Stability testing vehicle - under test procedures - BioniX 13 wing..

So how safe is your wing in flight..?

Costs manufacturers.. heaps, booking a slot, testing, compliance proof - DULV Pitch Stability Certificate.

Very Simple.. there is no compromise on flight safety.

  15. No apology here... this is for real, lost another .. two of my triking friends just yesterday... an Arrow strutted wing.

How many more Aussie trike pilots need to impact the ground, sustain injury, live a life of total care, or ultimately die with a friend, wife or child... and leave so many behind wondering.. WHY>!

We Aussie triking sport aviators have lost too many trikers, no matter if its a HGFA or RAA microlight.. nothing to do with it.. at the end of the day.. WHY.!

TIME for some answers, fact is, Australia has the highest fatality figures for trikes in the world.

IMHO - Stand to be corrected, more than 100 trike pilots/passengers, and friends, since 1982.. tell me different should you dis-agree!.

In comparison, most of EU - France, Germany, Italy, UK and a few smaller countries.. less than 50 fatalities for a similar period.. with over 15,000 microlight pilot operators registered in the EU.!

    What tha..

Q: Why do we not have an order.. CAO 95.32 Standard, or similar, incl. Design Standard AD-32-1.. NAA, BCAR Section S, etc,.. that do not provide security in accountability for absolute integrity for in-flight safety, by the manufacturers we trust. Our support, our lives.. are offered without sacrifice, with our hard earned cash for safe aircraft to the suppliers of these machines.

Since mid 90's ... ONE single mandatory requirement for the majority of triking manufacturers across the world, especially Germany, France, UK & EU - all commercially manufactured wings - MUST comply/pass, recognised NAA - Aerodynamic Pitch Stability Test standards... simple.

In fact, hang glider manufacturers must comply with either the DHV or the USHGMA wing pitch standards, since 1983, or there abouts.

Today, we fly 70 knot rocket ships, without a tail, MTOW.. 475 kg.. 60 litres fuel, luggage and two people.. and we can operate almost anywhere across Australia.

Fantastic.. if you started flying flexwings in the 70's.. or just now... its affordable and should be safe... we expect to be safe if we make correct command decisions in the cockpit.

We have very good qualified instructors, both HGFA & RAA, so WHY are our friends flying into the ground, many more before and recently.. NOOSA, GLEN INNES, etc.etc.etc..

Actually, Australia .. one of few countries, has - NO AERODYNAMIC STABILTY COMPLIANCE STANDARD , (under CAO 95.32) for weight-shift Light Sport Aircraft - to identify, substantiate or confirm - flight path safety, pitch stability integrity or spiral recovery .. of the pointy bit, in the very un-predictable atmosphere we fly ! The twisted reflex SOFT WING... fitted to every trike.. around the globe.. since 1982.!

Sad news,. the kids of these beautiful parents, now live a life without their parents.. a very sad day... in need of an ANSWER.. WHY..!?
