  1. A while back, on talk back radio, I listened to a pilot who said he flew the same type of aircraft that was reported to have hit the Pentagon. He said, there was no way that type of aircraft could have done it, because, by the damage done to the building, the engines on that type of aircraft would have been bellow ground level when it went into the building and even then, the tail would have left damaged to the building, much higher up than what had been done.

    Frank.

So he has crashed one then ?

  2. Hi all I've spent the best part of today reading this thread. ( Its been raining most of the day in South Arm no point going outside) I have some questions I hope some one can answer!

1 how many 2200 engines have been manufactured

2 how many 2200 engines have failed

3 what is the breakdown of failures across the 3 common failure modes

    A Through bolt failure

    B exhaust valve failure

    C cylinder base flange cracking

    Cheers

  3. My uncle and aunty had a similar experience in the mid 70s when they inadvertently landed their T18 at NAS Nowra in deteriorating weather. The reception party was not as well armed but equally as cross! After the situation was explained all was good and the duty watch was sent to the end of the runway to recover the wheel spats that had been torn off by the arrester wire. They where treated to lunch at the officers mess and given a tour of the base while they waited for the weather to clear. They then continued on with their circumnavigation of Oz with no further incident.

Looks very similar to a set up I saw that was used to check the stealth qualities ie put up on the stand and hit with radar. Can't remember where I saw it?? Maybe on a doco not sure:dizzy:

It was a doc'o on Area 51 and the radar testing that they where conducting on the SR71

  5. What was the outcome of this Discussion paper from CASA, I have searched the CASA web site but I can not find any reference to the DP! . I understand that the MTOW for a RA-Aus registered AC is 600kg just interested to know why the 750-760kg proposition failed to get up. Thanks in advance for any information that will enlighten me.

  6. Does anyone know who was the dill in the Aerochute that tracked down the straight at Phillip Island at approx. 150 ft (well below the top of the communication tower that is just west of the straight) while the bike races were on mid-morning on Jan 26th.

Mainly white chute with red panels on each end and a dark colour between the red and white on both ends.

He/she tracked in from the north, made a "run" down the straight (actually more like an enebriated "wander" down the straight) then made a pretty rough U-turn over the camping area then departed to the north.

This idiot wasn't much of a pilot as they we up and down/side to side and all over the shop ....... but low.

Or are aerochutes permitted to be below 500 ft while being a poser to a crowd?

It was not a good look

It might just be a rumour then, my informant riding the RS1980 in the team is good at getting rumours started! He never let's the truth get in the way of a good story!

  8. Near enough, Shaun. I've always had fast road twins, mostly European. In the last few years, after a gap of nearly four decades, we "got the band back together". The survivors gathered at Hidden Valley to perform unnatural acts on motorcycles. Each year my Darwin mate buys a faster bike. When I go up for my annual visit he puts me on it. Last year it was the GSX-R. Useful power from 4 to 16,000 rpm. They don't rev, they vibrate! I had awesome fun; my 1975 leathers still fit, but are a little outdated. So is my riding style, but I wasn't the slowest on the track.

I have finally let my bike rego go. The funds won't stretch that far, and I've recently had a few close shaves on the road with people who don't give way. Sad, but I have some great memories.

Yes I stopped riding on the road after some near death experiences in the early 90s around Sydney, now I just ride at the track much safer, at least most people are going in the same direction!

  9. Thanks, Jason - good suggestion on the thicknesser. I already have a semi half decent table saw, also a router & table. Might have a trial run thicknessing with the router, but there's several kilometres of wood to do, so will prolly buy a thicknesser.Which thicknesser do you use? My local Bunnings does the Ryobi & Ozito cheapies (at $400 - 450). Are these any good do you know?

    Cheers

    Bruce

    Hi Bruce ,

I have hade good results with the Ryobi thicknesser, haven't built an aircraft with one yet! but I have built 2 houses and a bunch of furniture. I've used mine on every thing from 10mm pine up to 300 x 100 mm hardwood sleepers.

    Cheers

  10. Hi Gpshaun and welcome!I'm in Allens Rivulet so can pretty much see the Sandfly strip from here. (Never heard it called the Sandfly International Airport, but that makes sense, you can get a beer over the highway at the Longley International Hotel!)

Haven't noticed a Jab flying around the area, is it based there now?

I think Eugene is only down at Sandfly two days a week. He's not allowed to run training from there because noise issues with houses. How long have you been building the 701?

  11. Cool! As you can tell from my user name, I'm not yet a pilot, but I live in Kingston. Where are you planning to do your training?

With Eugene Reed he is about to start operating Freedom Flight from Cambridge in the next month or so.
