  1. Hi all, first up, thoughts and prayers to all those affected by the accident at Moorabbin last week. I am not here to speculate or go into details on that particular incident, however it did get me thinking (as a relatively low time RPL pilot) about losing power on final at a built-up aerodrome and what options there are to ensure the best possible outcome. The most obvious thing to me seems to make it standard practice to effectively perform a glide approach from downwind, or turn base a lot earlier than "normal". Does anyone do this or teach this? I'm guessing it would cause problems in the circuit being in a different pattern to everybody else all the time. What other issues are there? I'm lucky to fly out at Lilydale where there are plenty of off-field options if the dreaded did happen, but i still cant help feeling sometimes when I turn base at the "correct" point (45 degrees from the threshold or thereabouts), that if i lost my engine at that point or anywhere up to final on the "correct" glidepath, it definitely wouldnt be a certainty that I'd make it back to the field, whereas if i'd just turned base earlier and set up for a glide approach, it would be a lot better situation.

I'm guessing the dangers would be a much steeper approach path, possibly the chance of coming in too fast?

The old adage for approach and finals "power controls rate of descent and nose attitude controls airspeed !

Yep , it does work but it's conditional .

For this method to work you need to be configured somewhere on the negative side of the "lift/drag curve because if your on the positive side and you apply power you will increase airspeed .

  2. Yes , very true , "Aircraft Rego" , No rego , no planes flying , no organization ! ... but being optimistic , and comparing the "flying Club" segment to the "Flying School" segment .

Through out this country , as a generalization ,

question (1) : are the schools and clubs endeavoring to incorporate together or divide apart ?

    (2) : What are the agenda's to remain viable of the "clubs" vs the "schools" ?

  3. G'day Folks

A question if I may , Could someone advise me of the main segmented arena's available to RAA membership .

To elaborate very broadly , I would have thought that the various RAA members would range from Hobbyist's/Pilots , Amature Aircraft Builders ,

    Flying Schools , Executive/"Admin"/Board etc , Mechanical/Maintenance , Flying Clubs.

Am I anywhere near the ball park ?

    Thanks All

You may be able to shed some light on the discussions on this forum about the Wondai airstrip. There was talk about it being sold off by the Council etc.

Good to have you on board!

Would you be able to give me the heads up on how I can join the instructors forum ?

    Thanks Sue

  5. Thanks Sue

I am affraid that I have no knowledge of closures of Wondai Airstrip.

I can report that around 6 months ago there were stakes added to what I believe marked out parcels of land that I believe that the South Burnett council placed to signify to those interested to construct aviation related hangers and infrastructure at the airfield.

I have witnessed the construction of what I believe to be a 4 aircraft Hanger erected on some of these parcels of land situated on near the south eastern corridor of the airstrip.

    Thanks All

  6. Hi all

SEQFTA is a flying school based at Wondai QLD that has been operational since 2008 .

We use a J160 aircraft for flying training/Flight reviews etc that I purchased new from Bundaberg in November 2010.

Previous to the purchase of our own aircraft we cross hired a J120 and J160 for flying training purposes.

The flying training complex is based at Wondai Airport and consists of a hanger/class room combined.

We lease two land parcels side by side at Wondai Airport the main block consists of a hanger , classroom , aircraft yard space and lawns , the second provides an open ended "stand alone" hanger for one aircraft.

    Thanks All

    Regards

  7. Hi AllTime to visit the site make up again...is it working? is it what you want? what should be changed/improved? etc etc etc

I am concerned that the site is currently way left of field of what its intent was although there is a need, an important need for what it is currently providing. I am concerned when I hear statements like:

"some of the opinions expressed at this forum may be unsubstantiated or somewhat extreme"

but to fix that would require a return back to heavy moderation, and that is NOT what is preferred.

How do we lift our game whilst fulfilling the need of ALL users...I am open to ideas.

Now what about the site's functionality, its features, its services, everything that the site provides for you...what more can it provide and how can it provide it?

I am open to your ideas, ANY ideas that you may have silly or not, costly or not, way out there or not...I need your thoughts to help take Recreational Flying to its next level so please please post here in this thread any thoughts you may have to help me take the site to the next level for you...thanks!
