Electric flight

Hi guys,

There is a company, I think in the US, that has had an electric trike for a while now. They are developing an electric conventional aircraft using the trike as the test bed. There were some reports on it from Oshkosh and the company has a good website, if only I could remember what it was. There is also video on Youtube.

Length of flight really comes down to the battery being used, and the weight seems to be the enemy. But, as always, there only needs to be a market to push development along, so who knows whats around the corner.

The ideal would be for 3-4 hrs of flight, then a recharge time similar to the time it takes for a toilet break and a cup of coffee, and we will all be flying electrically.

Natfly for me. Our national fly in.

This is the first one I have been to in my own plane. Been to Narromine in the past in other vehicles. The town was fantastic. Only prob was lack of facilities at the southern end of the field (taxiway G). I have emailed Eugene with some suggestions for the future.

A permanent location makes a lot of sense. Investment in infrastructure not the least of it. Refer to comment re taxiway G.

I am sure competition will be hot when the contract comes up next time. Good time not to be on the board I think.

Overall a great place and a great event. The people involved in the prep and organisation need to be congratulated on a job very well done. There must be lots of them.

I'm no genius on Rotax, but my first thought was that if both modules had failed to spark, then it had to be something common to both. The likelyhood of both failing at the same time is too remote to consider.

Therefore the first place I would check is the grounding cct to the kill switch/s. But on further reading you seem to have covered that. I would even have checked the switch/s themselves. If they have mechanically failed internally they may ground out. And may do it intermittently as well.

That was my thoughts. Not very technical, but then these problems are sometimes really simple.

The next place I would check was the charging coils, but you seem to be doing that now. It would now be up to the people that really understand these things.

Probably not very helpful, but there you go.

I bought mine as soon as they were suggesting they might be required. Pretty cheap insurance was my motivator.

Our club (GSA) got together and bought a bunch of them. The qty discount was very attractive.

Wouldn't fly without it now.

Just clearing up an error from yestreday. My co-pilot will actually be PIC. The reference to co-pilot was simply that we are going to be in my plane.

I'm going.

First time in my own plane. Don't have X country yet, so am taking an experienced nav as my co pilot. Hoping to use the trip as part qual for my own nav though.

Hope to leave Ballarat on Friday and return Sunday, Monday or when the weather OK.

Looking forward to the new venue.
