  1. I'm afraid I agree with Mr Sixties Relic, uniforms are a bit of a wank in training. I know it's sposed to "Set standards" and "Prepare" for future employment but to me it reeks of wannabe's.

     

    Wearing a fight suit in an open machine or a windy Trike or Thruster is common sense, specially in winter.

     

    Wearing a uniform with bars doesn't make you a pilot, just like wearing a macdonalds uniform doesn't make you a chef.

     

     

  2. Richmond was well worth the trip, doubt we'll ever see one of that quaility again in OZ. On the other hand Temora put on 6 or 8 shows a year that are brillant. I don't know what overseas shows are like but doubt you could get as close as Temora. Lots of close safe flying demonstrating Aircraft brilliantly, although it won't be the same without Tom I'm sure he won't be forgotton at Temora.

     

     

  3. One reason for getting hot is mixture on Jabs, everyone seems to brag about 12 or 14 litres an hour but there's not too many brag about burnt valves. Make sure your running rich enough, you can go on all sorts of talk and hearsay but the only thing you can really go on is temps and plug colour.

     

     

  4. Can anybody shed any light on a couple of questions I have?

    1. It appears that there is a shortage of pilots therefore is it worth me going through to commercial rating either to do some part time charter work or work as an instructor (i have a roster that would be friendly for this), the logic being that I could at least part pay for some of my flying hours.
       

    You could work you way through but don't count on making money from a commercial, up until the last twelve months people were actually paying to work to get hours. That's changed slightly but don't know for how long. You will spend $60,000+ to get a commercial only to make **** money if you actually get paid. People with 1500 of so hours are flying something like a Metro for less than $45,000 a year. Dash 8 captains with regionals are only getting around $65,000. It might change but it hasn't in the last thirty years.

    Is buying a plane and sitting it at the airport or even cross hiring an option that makes flying cheaper once a PPL has been gained as there are two of us that will want to fly..

    If your going to do a fair bit of flying, it could be cheaper.

     

    1. Any idea of hourly costs in fuel and maintenance for say a Jabiru size aircaft.
    2. Between $50 and $100, maybe more depending on all sorts of variables.

  5. I don't know of any low wing trikes or side by side config trikes or tailwheel?? :?

    Trike wasn't mentioned till my first post, some call a light Aircraft a microlight. My questions were trying to identify what sort of Aircraft it was, as you know they come in all shapes and sizes.

  7. You will get many different answers, it's hard to tell the bullshit from the good advice. I've found the simplest is the best, if things get too complicated you can't take it all in and use it when your flying.

     

    To me the idea is to keep the Aircraft flying as long as you can as close to the ground as you can. You have to keep flying while the speed decays as close to the ground as you can till the Aircraft stops flying. Hopefully you will be only a couple of inches off the ground and the Aircraft will just squeak on. Look out to roughly the middle ground, not just in front of you but about 150 metres out. This is a very subjective thing and varies with different pilots.

     

    There is no definitive way to land correctly, judgement takes time, you can't expect to do it in any real time frame. Different skill and coodination levels give different times for training. Try not to get too hyped up and just take it as it comes, some solo in 10 others in 25 hours. It will take how long it takes, you can't really rush these things. Starting at a more mature age should help you you with a more level headed approach, just relax and enjoy every bit.

    Technoligy with changed applications/rates/chemicals.

     

    Changes in Aircraft, systems, Aircraft going from basic to big turboprop with 3 or 4 computors onbard with GPS guidence.
