  1. Think It's one of the few flying.. 3 possible is it Vev?. 1980... That's only 37 years ago. The current engine (type) in it is probably the best of the period. Nev

    Hi Nev,

I beleive there only 4 still flying in the world and this is one of them. The earlier 1928 models had the Curtiss OX5 engines but were considered under powered for the airframe, the 1929 had the Wright Whirlwind J-5-6 engine with 165hp. It feels like a time machine flying her around, no radio, only charts and a compass, can't see forward because of a huge pot in the middle of the screen which soon gets covered in grease from the rocker gear.

    Cheers

  2. It's absolutely gorgeous. I assume it's a restoration rather than a replica?Nice co-incidental colour match with the car too.

Its the real deal, it was restored in 1979 and won the 1980 Silver Wings at Oshkosh and then won it again a few years later.

  3. Airspace advocacy on behalf of membersRAAus is pleased to advise members of two important airspace developments which are key components and successes of RAAus member advocacy via direct submissions and Regional Airspace and Procedures Advisory Committee (RAPAC) to CASA, the Defence Department and the Office of Airspace Regulation.

The first success relates to RAAus pilots and the current limitation on transit through East Sale military managed restricted areas.

In May 2018 a new VFR corridor north of East Sale will be created to allow transit for RAAus members and other airspace users without airways clearance. This will be designated as a new Danger Area (D353) and Class G airspace, effectively allowing transit through the area for RAAus pilots currently unable to access controlled or active restricted airspace.

Further details will be provided closer to the release date expected in May 2018 and communicated through e-news, website and Sport Pilot. RAAus pilots cannot transit East Sale until this new Danger Area is formalised and provided on aeronautical charts.

    Well done R AAus ! ..... Bob

This is an great success ... btw what is the second success?

  5. I think you must be confusing avgas with something else. Its extremely volatile and has a large number of low molecular size components that are quite neuro-active when inhaled. They do have a significant high-inducing effect.

The volatile nature can be seen when you spill some avgas on the ground - it evaporates really fast.

Spill some opal on the side of your shoes and while its not strong it is noticeable for days. Drop it on the ground and its there till you drive away and probably lots longer.

One of the things I really hate about mogas is that if you get it on yourself it stinks for hours but spill same amount of avgas on yourself and its gone in seconds or minutes.

The shell documents available on their webshow show the constituents of Avgas 100LL as :

    Contains:

Chemical name Identification number Concentration [%]

    toluene 108-88-3, 203-625-9 5 - 25

    Xylene, mixed isomers 1330-20-7, 215-535-7 5 - 25

    cyclohexane 110-82-7, 203-806-2 1 - 5

    Ethylbenzene 100-41-4, 202-849-4 1 - 5

    n-Hexane 110-54-3, 203-777-6 0 - 5

    Trimethylbenzene,

    all isomers 25551-13-7, 247-099-9 0 - 5

    cumene 98-82-8, 202-704-5 0 - 0.5

    Naphthalene 91-20-3, 202-049-5 0 - 0.5

On the other hand lead poisoning is not high-producing at all. Most people have no idea they have it - when at lower levels (need subtle testing to pick it) or have debilitating not euphoric effects when its severe.

    Hi Jab who

I am quite sure about my facts. Avgas in low in aromatics and low in volatility compared to mogas. It contains < 5% of the aromatics (typically <2%), which is what the kids get high on, however I do concede they do not get high on lead poisoning. All of the work and design done on Opel was using Avgas without the lead, albeit the normal mogas automotive additives are included.

In terms of your observations of the residuals from spilling mogas... Mogas has a somewhat wide range of materials and the residues is often the heavy ends that are in the mix as well as some of the additives. The light ends (toluene, xylene etc) will flash off very quickly which is what these poor kids get their high from.

Opel and Avgas is almost all Isooctane, low in aromatics (solvents) and low volatility... Opel as a retail product has made a huge difference in slowing the petrol sniffing use. Unfortunately these kids have found new ways to get a high out of petroleum products, which I do not wish to promote and think it best I not mention here.

    Cheers

  6. I agree Nev.

My own observations tells me that people do avoid accessing treatment owing to fears they will be caught up in the AvMed system and forced to spend a small fortune on tests and specialist or even be grounded. I say AvMed is not only ineffective in predicting or preventing future medical related flying incidents i.e. food poisoning, it is counter productive in driving good health management.

I feel there is reasonable augment to suggest AvMed could be a root cause in poor medical management ... In my opinion, CASA would do better to encourage pilots to develop more open relationship with the family GP's and their specialist to manage their health in a private and confidential way.

After all, we are all responsible every day to make the call if we are fit to fly ... surely we can be given the responsibility to manage ones health under self-certification using the services of my own GP's professional support.

    Cheers

  7. G'day Alf ... I'm sorry we didn't chat yesterday too. I meant to catch up after the meeting but I took my granddaughter over to have a sit in the AN2 and you had left by the time I got back from the hangar.

You know you are always welcome at Tyabb for a BBQ lunch any Saturday.

  8. I went along and thought that it was worthwhile event.... I suspect there was a better turnout than expected but that is a positive, rather than no one at all, even if the catering was a little under sized.

Personally I thought the input from both Michael and Darren was informative and open. It was clear, in my mind, that strategically they are trying to position the RAA to compete within a new set of environments (RPL) to retain and grow the membership via new privileges such as higher weight limits and control airspace access. Equally, retaining the old platforms to support the rag and tube aircraft in which RAA was founded.

I was pleased to hear they are reacting to the regulators from a base of factual data and evidence, which will be important to set the arguments around retaining or current medicals self-certifications process. This is an area that does worry me and something we should all provide feedback to the RAA that we want them to fight tooth and nail to retain.

I think these engagements are good and I say keep rolling them out to the members... I'm pleased I went and thanks to Lethbridge and the members for hosting the day!

    Cheers

  9. I have sent the letter below to my local member. Hopefully others on this site will agree enough to send something along the same lines to their members. If we don't speak up then the silliness will get passed.

I write to you, my local member, to ask that you vote against the “Air Services Amendment Bill 2016” recently proposed by Adam Bant in the House of Representatives. The proposed legislation is poorly thought through, illogical and asks for things that already exist. This bill, if implemented, will have a significant negative impact on general aviation in Melbourne and Australia more generally.

The proposed bill contains an amendment that would prohibit aircraft from flying within 5km of Melbourne at a height less than 2000m. This would mean that small aircraft ravelling west from Moorabbin airport or into Essendon airport would be required to operate through the controlled airspace associated with the large transport aircraft around Tullamarine airport. Small aircraft operating in this area are already required to operate above 1000 feet under the civil aviation regulations. At such a height the noise emitted from a small aircraft is significantly less than other general city noises like trams and vehicle traffic. The proposal unnecessarily restricts aircraft movements for no benefit.

The proposal to allow for anyone affected in any way by air traffic to require Airservices Australia to review flight paths is unworkable. This would divert the limited resources of Airservices Australia into endless reviews even where no adverse impact to people on the ground is demonstrated. It will provide the opportunity for vexatious complaints to clog up the system diverting resources away from Airservices Australia’s other essential tasks.

The proposed legislation also asks for the creation of an “Aircraft Noise Ombudsman” despite the fact that such an organisation already exists to resolve complaints about aircraft noise.

Please don't vote for this proposed amendment.

    Hi Nobody,

Good on you for writing to your member.

Btw ... it is Adam Bandt (not Bant).

I have just read the Bill .... my interpretation of it says it is not just the CBD limited to 2000m, it is all of Melbourne Residential Areas (See 10B (2) (a)) and makes no allowance or exemption for aircraft taking-off or landing.

The whole thing is a complete nonsense!

    Cheers

  10. The proposed legislation goes much further than that. It appoints an Aviation Noise Ombudsman and a Community Advocate whose jobs revolve around facilitating complaints from people who dislike aircraft noise.Kaz

Hi Kaz ... I thought there was already an Aircraft Noise Ombudsman in place?

    Aircraft Noise Ombudsman

It makes me wonder how how much understanding of the Regulations the Greens have before they begin the journey?
