  1. Well yeah I was kind of thinking that, they know what runway you are holding short of because you've already announced that, and they can see you sitting there. Maybe the coffee machine was broken lol

     

    But I guess I'm wondering if it's actually technically correct to say the runway as well. I think I usually do but not always

     

     

  2. So normally at Jandakot we have runway 06L on 118.1 for most of the landing and departing aircraft, and 06R on 119.4 for aircraft doing circuits. On this morning it was obviously still fairly quiet as it was still early, and they had all traffic on 118.1 which I hadn't encountered before. they seemed to be picking on everyone (for want of a better word) for saying "cleared for takeoff" instead of "cleared for takeoff runway 06R"

     

    Normally just "cleared for takeoff" is allowed, I'm wondering a) how is the pilot meant to know that on this day a different read back is required and b) is it actually required? I'm assuming yes, you do need to read back the assigned runway for takeoff or lineup and wait or whatever, but maybe normally when the two different frequencies are operating they let it slide more often? Interested to hear some opinions.

  3. The other day was my last hour I needed to meet the requirements for my flight test! Flew out into the training area south of Jandakot, did some steep turns, stalls, practice engine out, precautionary landing field inspection, then back home again. Got beat around on the way back but it's all part of the fun right? :) hoping to get my flight test done as soon as the weather clears

  4. So I don't think we use these very often here in Australia, but it's still in the study material.. Anyway these two diagrams seem to contradict each other, wondering which is correct? I thought that the "L" indicates the base and final segment, like it seems to be represented in the diagram on the right. But on the left diagram that would mean both runways would be right Hand circuits but the caption says left hand circuits? Confused

     

     

  5. You can always mount it a bit closer to the front. Again depends on the plane you end up flying! You could even go the head strap. I find that even with the instructor I can still see enough, there's a few other videos on my you tube channel with the instructor. Anyway you're learning VFR you don't need to much reference to instruments. It's more helpful just having the video to jog your memory. I usually watch my last flight the night before my next lesson.

     

     

     

  6. With the GoPro, do you need to bring your own mount? How does that work with say, top wing vs canopy style plane? Would an old iPhone do it? (given I assume it's more about the content then the quality)I got an old GoPro hero 2 for $100 second hand, it's still shooting 1080HD, which is good cos you can clearly see the instruments etc. I just mount with a suction cup, depends on what plane you're in tho

If you turn up prepared for every lesson, ready for what you're going to do (ie have a copy of the syllabus) and if you record your lessons with a GoPro and have a good look at what you learned.. You will save yourself a lot of flying time! It's amazing how much information you miss without a video to go over. That way you don't need to "relearn" things on your next flight. I'm only a greenhorn myself, but just thought I'd mention that since I've found it extremely helpful. Also I find using flight simulator on a pc with a yoke and throttle to be very helpful, even if mostly for practicing procedures and navigation, and not so much actual flying skills.

  8. I know that once you have an Ra-Aus licence it's a fairly simple process to convert to an RPL.. My question is if I had an Ra-Aus licence with pax and cross country endorsements, and have applied for an RPL, and have a bit of experience in Ra-Aus planes, what would be involved in getting the PPL done from that point? Is it like another 20 or so hours or is it competency based? I'm assuming you would have a bunch of exams to pass too. Just curious. Mainly because I'm told you can't get an Aerobatic endorsement under Ra-Aus !?
