  1. He got rid of Pistol and Boo, didn't he?

Slightly OT, but that was a vastly different issue. Animal Quarantine cannot be left to foreign people who are paid to imitate other people (Johnny Depp) or the popular press.

The inadvertent introduction of any one of dozens of diseases etc., that currently do not exist in Australia and which none of our domestic, native or feral animals have any resistance to, would be devastating on many levels. On this occasion I am totally behind that buffoon Joyce. Even though it was he who fired the bullets, he didn't load that gun.

As this is an Aviation forum it may have had serious personal aviation consequences. As Depp's party came and went in chartered aircraft the PiC has responsibility for the Flight, Aircraft and all on it. His signature was on the documentation that certified that those particular flights met ALL Australian entry conditions. As such it could have been the PiC' License in jeopardy thus his career.

  2. I'm not sure whether CSA made the right decision by locating in MDN because it is so far out in the sticks. happy days,

Probably for much the same reason that RAAF Pearce 2FTS did/does a component of their Flying Training at Albany in Summer and Learmonth in Winter.

Lots of uncluttered sky. And not too many panicky or (any bit of) noise averse people around, who are only too willing to telephone any and everyone whenever their dyspepsia surfaces. Thus causing lots of extra work for those flying and those running the shop. And if they have contacts up the hill in Perth or Canberra, that extra work multiplies exponentially.

  3. If you were going to introduce a new product of just about any type you could name from vehicle to furniture, there are certain well known and proven industry procedures you follow,Raptor are way off the mark.

They are building the entire craft, including all of it's unknown parameters, as a complete unit and expect to roll it out the door in 2016. Wait, what ....?....s.

Thanks, its good to get the views of those who make their living at the heart of the industry.

  4. Titisee indeed. . .YES. . .I've seen all of her vids. . .I was wondering how long it would be before someone noticed that obvious bit of useful innuendo. . .!025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif

I did watch that a few weeks ago and thought the same. I did think about posting it but knew that all the Hon Gents on this forum cruise at greater moral altitudes (oops done it again) than the impression given. 096_tongue_in_cheek.gif.d94cd15a1277d7bcd941bb5f4b93139c.gif

  5. I have just come across this one. I don't know if it has popped up here before.

    Raptor Aircraft Home

Hop over to the "Finance" drop down and check the cost schedule. For what it appears to be, it looks mind boggling.

At ~1600 kg and 300knot max - it looks GA

I do like this one "reversible propeller".

It reminded me of the first time I saw a C130 back-up. I was at Rabaul Airport in the early 1970s when a Herc came in and wanting to get the right parking spot (and impressing the plonkers) he reversed the props and backed up to where he wanted to offload and reload.

    It was all extremely impressive.

  6. Hi guys, thanks for your responses.IBob, I was there in late 60 to late 61 then went off to Yatesbury for my 'fitters' course.

Neil, I visited Southend regularly as I was raised in Thundersley. In later years I went the see their Bev and was so saddened by it's condition. The cockpit had been vandalized due to being totally open to young kids with no appreciation of the aircraft. Most gauges has been smashed and part were stolen. Very sad. It's gone to that great airport in the sky now.

OME, enjoy that flight, nothing like taking first timers up, especially the children. This is one of my grand-daughters when she visited from the UK. Note the foam, makes headsets 'one size fits all'.

  7. Does anyone know anything about the airstrip at Wyberba beside the New England Highway with the Bonanza on sticks? Doesn't seem to be in the Qld country airstrips guide.

I don't, but I drive past there regularly. I live in Tenterfield.

And I notice that Qld Transport, or whatever the truckling monitoring mob is called there, have put up a goodly sized fence at the end of the N/S strip. Although someone had the sense to place the sign a bit further back up the road so it wasn't a choice of Fence AND sign.

I also noticed that they have built another "shed" (hangar) over on the East side of that strip.

If it all goes haywire, there are always the Tomato fields across the road, then just to the north on the "Tomato" side there is a fairly good clear patch of level ground. Unfortunately that appears to be owned/occupied by a bunch of Highland Cattle but I don't know how territorial they are ;-)

  8. Umm, isn't that what Farms had prior to the Grid reaching them?

I remember when I was in my early years of high school in the Hunter Valley in the early 1960s, some of my classmates lived on farms quite a distance from towns, they were all on generators because there were no external power sources. Even after Liddell was commissioned it still took several years until the poles and wires reached them.

  9. Contrary to many beliefs Pumped hydro doesnt make any power in fact uses a lot and with evap and losses will burn a bit of water too.Just a battery and not a very efficient one. Still not a bad idea its just still needs big power generated somewhere else.....

Blocks of memory return from many years ago and I thought that the reason the Snowy Mountains Scheme pumped the water back up into the top storage ponds at night time was because of the spare power in the Grid, because the coal fired stations had to run 24/7, and it was very cheap to do so.

If those parameters have changed, I am prepared to re-think my approach to that form of power generation.

  10. As in Miami etc there are places where rebuilding is foolish. SOME places are not suitable if you have to rebuild infrastructure in a short timespan. Go somewhere more suitable. That MAY get difficult , but the other is not the answer. Nev

By the looks of it, nature is in the process of straightening out that particular human quirk 037_yikes.gif.f44636559f7f2c4c52637b7ff2322907.gif

  11. We are a minuscule polluter compared to Asian countries, do they give a hoot about polluting???"Australia was even more minuscule in 1853 when they introduced the 8 hour day

"We are going to make a huge difference our little 24 million inhabitants to the world pollution levels while a majority of the rest of the world don't give a stuff"

Australia and New Zealand made a huge difference back in the 1890s when they gave the vote to women. The home of the brave and land of the free didn't give their females the vote until 1928.

We get cleaner while they get dirtier but we save the world, I think not

I'm all for reliable clean cheap energy but until such time we can get it, keep our poxy little coal fired power stations running

'Ain't going to happen. I reckon they will pour $millions into remedial maintenance and then the machinery will just collapse, soon after. Short of competely replacing everything, replacing bits and pieces in that environment just wont cut it. They have already flogged to death everything at Liddell. And I would say its much the same for every other privatised coal fired power station.

  12. At their Conference last week, the Nationals voted to phase out all subsidies for renewable energy and build more coal-burning power stations. Meanwhile, the Government wants to subsidise AGL to keep Liddel PS open for another decade. They've lost the plot! They sold off our power industry because they claimed private industry could run it more efficiently; when private industry want to get out of coal and into renewables they throw public money to stop them!

Interesting isn't it. Your and my local member could well be a founding member of "anti-Mensa"

  13. I would much prefer to see someone in aviation in something they can afford rather than not fly at all, however the solo rate on a sling is $195 per hour, compared to the $165 on a drifter. The sling is a good 30 knots or maybe more faster than a drifter for a similar fuel burn, which means if you wanted to travel somewhere it would actually end up cheaper.

Umm, the header is about "...training costs..." so I reckon the extra time saved getting to and from the Training Area wont amount to that much.

Learning the basics on a cheaper airframe makes much more sense.

That brings back some memories Denis, not all of them good. Which pilots course were you on?

    Evening Ian

I noticed the PC9 and Bug Smasher in your lineup and was intrigued.

Pilot's Course, none of them. I was their IT bod from 2001 to 2005. When they Deployed I did the database split and rejoin when they came back. Depending on what was happening I sometimes deployed with them, always to Learmonth, because the comms up there were crap.

I looked after the Flying Training Database, a program specifically written for 2FTS called FlightPro (About Us | Command and Control | Operations Management | Systems) and (FlightPro® | Command and Control | Operations Management | Systems). This incorporated the Curriculum and all the Programming, so the daily Flying Operations was on both the Traditional Whiteboard in The Cage and on the Defence network, with live screens all over the School, out on the FlightLine, up in the Tower, Base HQ and some other places. As time went on Hours, Quals, Currencies and Recencies were included.

Top LH corner of the YPLM landing is one of the FlightPro Strips. Tail #26 pix is probably the best one I have ever taken.

Re the "not all of them good" comment, yes even for the top Studs, they were always under the gun, it was pretty stressful for them.

I come up to Brisbane every now and then (terrestrial transport ;-) ) could we get together next time?

    Cheers

    Denis

  15. Clifton:$165.00 in a Drifter

    $176.00 in a J160

    $198.00 in a J230

Add annual club membership to those prices.

Plus a whole heap of relatively aircraft free airspace. So picking up the basics is a whole lot easier.

Why do you think the RAAF Pearce Flying Training School (2FTS) do their winter Flying Training - Combat Flying and Aerobatics up at RAAF Learmonth, which is a Civil/Military Airport?

    And Summer in Albany?

Lots of free sky and practically no-one else there.

Learmonth isn't as scenic as the Darling Downs though ;-)

  16. Great post OK.Can you imagine the following happening here?

.... all designed to help you ‘be in the now’. At school, days begin and end with a short ceremony, where greetings are exchanged and the day’s events are announced. Before and after each class, students and teacher stand, bow and thank each other. And before starting the lesson, students are asked to close their eyes to focus their concentration.

And - I adopted the business card thing when I heard about that one fifteen or so years ago. Peoples' reaction is sometimes quite astounding, and it's opened a few doors for me that might have remained firmly closed otherwise.

I believe that more than a few also roster the students for after class room cleaning etc.,
