I have been to and through Coffs many times, the times ATC made it easy were in the minority. I have struck that with most areas with ATC. The only times ATC make it easy is when I'm flying a Bomber on fires, they can't do enough to help then.

Above or below A045? Ie. in towers or en-routes airspace?

Also how do you mean made it difficult?

  2. So at what point did flight Safety become a subscription service? The purpose of that magazine is to educate pilots and avoid incidents. Pilots who take unnecessary risks would not be the sort of pilot to pay for a subscription to this completely negating the point.

I think the increased risk in safety is worse than C over D or any other bits of rubbish we are hearing about.

    Thoughts?

To me, the most positive part of this report is this par on page 14 about future airspace reclassification:

On the one hand, I don't quite understand how this makes airspace sense; does it mean that you could just make your way coastal past Coffs at, say, 4,500 (in Class E) without the need of any clearance?  But mightn't that put you in conflict with arriving/departing IFR flights?  Or would all of their inbound/outbound tracking be within Class D?  I guess so; and the good part is that, Coffs traffic will be controlled only by Coffs Tower.

The implications of this for safer aviating around and through this area are huge. But when it comes to recreational aircraft we need to remember that whilst a clearance is not required in Class E, a transponder is.

So this might be another good reason to get a SkyEcho conspicuity device (the poor man's ADSB transponder) because they're officially approved for the purposes of Class E entry.

    Dick thinks that is safer

  4. Hi All,

I'm just updating my logbook online and adding all my flying history. While doing this I looked to see if I can find photo's of all the aircraft I have flown. I have found for all of them except two and was wondering if anyone here might have them for me. Both were Arena Aviation tomahawks being flown out of Archerfield in the late 90s. BVJ, and FLA.

    Many thanks,

    J

  5. Hi,

I'm after some advice for a flight from Caloundra to Bankstown return. I have recently got my CTA endorsement and want to use it and also don't want to fly the whole way down over all the range. I think I will try and get a transit coastal through Gold Coast and Coffs then do the coastal transit through Williamstown as well before joining the Northern inbound route for Bankstown. Does this sound ok, and any advice would be awesome.

For Coffs, if I was at say A075, would I just be getting my clearance from BN CEN, as I would be going into Class C to transit?

Something that absolutely trips me up, is how different all the Class D's are?

    Cheers,

    Kyle.

For cfs, clearance is with bn centre at that level. Lodging a fight plan will hero immensely with getting your clearance but as always it depends on traffic.

    Enjoy the flight

  6. Hi all! Was due to have my first lesson flying in controlled airspace at Coffs harbour yesterday whilst on holiday but it got cancelled due to weather. Had a few questions I was going to ask the instructor so ill have to ask you guys instead:)i) Looking at the coffs harbour ERSA and VTC. How can you tell if the class D/Class C surrounding airspace has radar coverage or not?

ii) Also, what sort of departure report would you give operating out of this airport? Would it be different if you were departing into Class C as opposed to class D or class G? At metro class D airports like camden no departure report is required so Im a little confused.

    Thanks, Rich

    RJW: lots of ifs here.

    i) we have radar for center from a040 and up. The tower has radar for situational awareness only, not for seperation.

ii) depends on ifr, vfr, tower open ornot. Best to discuss this with your instructor.

    Good luck

  7. So my broker phoned all the insurers who cover this and none of them had a definition of an ultralight even though they load for them (or exclude). So after much tooing and froing we got a response from my one (and remember this doesn't go for everyones so check with your own policy) but they said that MTOW of 480kg or less is an ultralight.

SDQDI: A simple email didn't do it. My broker has been showing me their emails and they are just back and forth without giving a definition. We had to escalate it right up to get the definition.

  8. Hi All,

If anyone is sitting on a tonne of Qantas frequent flyer points and have nothing to do with them, you can convert them for Bose products including the A20. I have 200,000 points which I think gets me a headset for free, or near enough.

Just an FYI if anyone is interested.

    Cheers,

  9. Hi All,

Recently picked up some Trauma insurance and they wanted to charge me a heap more to fly "Ultralights" so I excluded it from my policy. Given I'm giving up my RAAus membership I didn't really care.

For 3 months I have been trying to get a response from them on what their definition of an ultralight is (could be anything smaller than a 737, who knows with Insurers) but no response so far.

Just wondering if anyone knows any official definitions in the meantime, cao's, regs, anything?

    Cheers,

    Shags

  10. I'm with Ian on the CTA access etc. I bit the bullet and have commenced my PPL training and will let my RAAus membership lapse. It's just become too hard trying to work within the RAAus rules with what I want to do in my flying.

Leave RAAus to how they want it. I sincerely do hope the ELAAA gets off the ground and may look into that when it does.

    Cheers,

    Shags

  11. Does this stuff about VFR flight plans apply to Australia:

If I file a VFR flight plan will ATC know my route?

    - Yes but with some caveats

    1. you are still flying the route that was submitted in the flight plan

    2. We don't always have automatic access to your flight plan. Usually we have to request it from the FDC's and then we can access it.

    3. It can be tough to find Jabiru 1234's flight plan if it is listed as say JAB1234, or maybe 241234 etc. Helps if you let us know what you filed as the flight id.

If you call us 10nm before CTA and say you have a plan, sometimes it just may not be long enough. As per the above it can take a bit of time to get the plan so don't leave it to the last minute to request code and clearance.

    Hope this helps.

  12. I am going to pipe up here and say 'depends on traffic'. Some of us are so used to rejection we dont bother anymore! However, I was flying back from Kooralybn recently with a bunch of people and as I was battling the thermals via Archerfield when one of my fellow pilot friends tried for clearance direct and got it!! Always worth a try, sometime you get clearance, most times you dont! I have only managed it once in my short career!

Absolutely depends on traffic. When jets are being sequenced into Sydney, Gold Coast or Brisbane there just isn't physical space to put a slow flyer in the middle of it all.

APLUND: Are there any specifics about how it works that you would like to know? Plenty on here that will help you out if we can. Unfortunately there just isn't the ability to bring visitors in atm due to the security levels.

  13. We don't want to get into a comparative discussion I this thread about safety in Aus vs rest of world ( which i would like to have in another thread) we are picky about some read backs. If i clear you to "sydney via sanad flight planned route" and you read back "sydney via sanad" then you flew sanad direct to yssy then i would get into trouble. So sometimes we May seem picky on readbacks but its usually for a good reason though maybe not obvious to the pilot.

  14. Kasper: If this were to happen in the proposed Company format, then there would be legal recourse against the directors I think.

Of course it is poor form to delay in releasing this information. It should be available as soon as is practicable. This is the issue I believe with the current volunteer Board setup. There is no recourse to push them to get something done.
