  1. There was a student on his first solo cross country that ran out of fuel on short final our home-field, Hawthorne Airport in Los Angeles, CA back in the mid-1970's. He too ended up flying between two trees to shear the wings off and slow himself down, just as he'd been advised by his instructor (and many magazine articles), for an off field landing. Unfortunately, his off field landing was on a relatively open golf course! He apparently spent a considerable amount of time during his descent trying to find two trees close enough together... poor kid! Also unfortunate for the brand new C-172 that lost both wings and still ended up on it's back. Cheers, jc
