  1. I have had a 912ULS foul plugs on unleaded due to the idle being too rich, but only after prolonged periods at a low idle.

The short term work around is, if your brakes are good enough, a short full power run which should clear it.

As mentioned above, there is something wrong if you are getting fouling, best to work out what & sort it.

  2. Our club CDFG Inc thanks to the members generosity and the now defunct Gladstone Club, who gave us their left over funds when they deregistered, have been able to provide a scholarship to one very lucky girl applicant to commence her flying career so it's not just the big fella's that do these things it's also the little fish because we believe that it is so very important to keep aviation alive for our future generations.

The money for the scholarship you refer to, as you mention, was raised by the Callide Dawson Flying Group and the Galdstone Aero Club.

It should be made clear to all that this scholarship has absolutely nothing to do with the ELAAA.

  3. It still beats me how solar can be called “renewable” energy. Once those rays of sunshine have been converted to electricity or heat they are gone, used, kaput. There is no reusing or renewing that energy! The sun has a finite amout of energy. Once its gone thats it!!!!

  4. Samarai was the parent company of Airborne magazine, which is now defunct.

The rights to the plans were purchased by Wolf Models. If you go to their website, click on “Airborne Plans”, then open page 4 of that listing, you will see the Drifter plan is still available for $33.00. I haven’t had plans printed for probably 20 years but I doubt you would be able to get them copied for much less.

  5. The information re flying displays over water is either very new or very wrong. I closely follow happenings at Duxford on an almost daily basis through several sources (Duxford is Mecca to me). While there have been alot of changes to UK regulations regarding air displays with vintage aircraft since the 2014 Shoram Hunter accident, displays at Duxford (and many other land locked locations) continue. There has been changes to both the crowd line and to the display line at Duxford to comply with the new regulations. In reality the changes (which were in place for the “Flying Legends” show in 2017), while increasing safety margins, have had little impact on the airshow experience for spectators.

The final AAIB report on the Shoram accident is available online for those interested in the actual events. It will be interesting to see how this report is used in the court case against the pilot, as AAIB states clearly in the report that it’s investigation is not for the assignment of blame. If this report is used in court, it is not a stretch of the imagination that the AAIB may not get the level of cooperation it is used to from people Involved in accidents.

  6. On a side note thanks guys for your comments about whether to combine the sites again or not it is really helping by getting your views

Glad you appreciate it Ian because comments like red750's above ( calling other's feedback "hissy fits" and being told to "build a bridge" ), does nothing to encourage anyone to contribute.

I often refrain from contributing to threads here because of this exact type of response from those who think their opinion is the only one. I enjoy a disscussion with varying points of view, but having someone try to force their opinion on others ( especially when like in this situation it is only an opinion ), will usually see me leaving that discussion.

  7. I can't see how it makes any difference having it together

It does make a difference if like me you use the "New" button in the menu on the left side of the screen. This page will show all the recent posts from the off topic as well as the flying stuff. As the page only shows so many posts, every off topic post is pushing another flying post off the front page.

I also think having the off topic stuff separate discourages thread drift, I have seen many times as a thread drifts someone suggests it be taken to the off topic site, preserving the original thread topic.

  8. I managed to go for my first “100$ Hamburger” on Saturday. Hired ProSky Maryborough’s Tecnam Sierra and went for lunch at the Lagoons 1770 Resort and Spa in Agnes Waters. Could not have asked for better flying weather and lunch. The Resort and restaurant is a 5min walk from YAWT and the caretaker was kind enough to give me a lift there.

If you had waited until Sunday there were 23 aircraft flew in to Agnes Waters and over 40 aviation enthusiasts for a very social lunch at the resort. It was a bit breezy but very managable. The meal was excellent too.

  9. I mixed up one; the question about the spar plug should have been "adjust carb float bowl level. The spark plug which fell out was listed in the RAA magazine along with:

    Vapour Lock

    Oil leakage around filter

    Carbs overflowing

These four reports related to successful forced landings.

So that's seven without really doing any research.

Thats great to tell us about some incidents, but where is the proof that these were the result of L1 work?

  10. You're the one concerned about the L1 issue; I'd be surprised if I wasn't busier than you.

No I am not concerned about L1s. Like SQDI I am not aware of aircraft falling out of the sky due to bad L1 maintenance.

As for the busy comment, I am not the one with time to make almost 10,000 posts on here.

  11. I know one which not only took out the pilot/owner but his instructor, and another one who took out the tester, and another clown who put another instructor through the fence at the end of the strip, and that’s what I can remember in the time it took to write this. Then there are the engine failures, one doozy being the spark plug falling out of a Rotax. It would be more helpful if RAA presented the reasons along with a list of the failures that led to them.

I'd love to hear more about these incidents and specifically how bad maintenence by an L1 caused them. Please don't tell me to dredge through a mountain of reports and stats, I have better things to do. RAAus don't make info on fatals available ( let's not have discussion for the 100th time here ) and even the info they do release is thin on specifics.

  12. I like the idea of a chute but if we are seeing people react slow enough to stall then how do we expect them to react quick enough to pull a chute in an EFATO scenario?I wonder how often pilots across the board are practicing a no throttle approach and landing? I wonder if powered approaches are letting pilots land without that ground rush sensation that you need to hold the nose down through to land safely without throttle?

I am not saying that is so for all pilots but I would think it could possibly be a big factor. Should a no throttle landing be required at each BFR? Maybe that could be a small thing that might make a big difference?

If by "no throttle landing" you mean a glide approach, I absolutely agree. I was taught that unless you have to do a long approach to fit in with traffic, all landings should be a glide approach. Pull the throttle to idle as you turn base and if you have judged it right you should not touch the throttle again until you need it to taxi clear of the runway.

This way you remain familiar & comfortable with your aircraft's glide performance, so when the fan does stop you are not in a completely different situation to most landings. Obviously there will be some difference between an idling prop and a stopped one, but better to practise at idle than not at all.

To open yet another debate I also agree with being able to turn a motor off completely, while overhead an airstrip and carry out a practise forced landing all the way to touchdown. This should only be done with a CFI on board and at a suitable strip that has safe options, at a time when it will not affect other traffic. I have done this and believe it is worthwhile to experience it. Having done it in a controlled & supervised fashion will help reduce the shock & possible panic when it eventually happens for real.
