Agree re the lack of cooperation between these organisations. I reckon it’s time to arrange a meeting with the senior management of these organisations and have them work out how they can put their differences aside and develop a strategy to work together to try to undo the damage caused by their poor performance. Together they could have effected change to the unworkable rules CASA are introducing. Instead they are wading with each other and allowing CASA a free hand to do what they like. The most effective time to change the rules is during the development of them.

Any meeting between the heads of the three organisations to come to some mutual agreement about recreational aviation will require those delegates to leave their personal egos AT THE DOOR! If they can do this and actually find the common ground, then we might have a chance.

  2. I have flown into Coolah a couple of times with our local aero club. I can’t remember what phone service was like on the ground. It is a nice enough strip to land on but is a fair way out of town. I would use it as a break stop but not as much a fuel stop. Depending on which way you were going Gunnedah or Quirindi or Coonabarabran may be better options.

i am a local at Quirindi and am more than happy to chat about the different options if you like. My mobile is 0427 eight three six 582

    regards Sam

Thanks for the info and the offer Sam.  We have located an agstrip near Coolah and its owner who is happy for us to 'drop in'.  All is good.   Now about the weather.........

  3. Coolah NSW?

I'm planning a trip and Coolah fits in for a fuel stop/break. Any local advice BFers can give me? Landing closer to town? Taxi? Mobile phone service at the Coolah airfield? Landing on the golf course maybe?

    Cheers

  4. The classic coal income 'understanding' comes from former greens leader Bob Brown. In an ABC TV interview Brown said he wanted all coal mines closed. The interviewer asked brown how would we make up for the loss of income to Australia after all the coal mines were closed down. Brown suggested a 'super profits' tax on the coal miners............................... needless to say, brown were soon 'removed' from his position.

Re foreign ownership - Whatever the figure, like a lot of minerals and farm produce, most coal is exported anyway. As long as Oz gets its cut along the way who cares. We carn't value add much to our farm and mineral exports because, amongst other things, Australia's power costs have in a few short years gone from the cheapest in the world to nearly the highest in the world. And why is that...

...So, getting back to the thread subject and the justification of even building unreliable wind turbines that are a hazard to aviation:

A/ Wind turbines still need a back-up power source for when the wind don't blow. At this time the back-up is either coal power, or diesel or gas power. i.e., the back-up is carbon power. The stupidity of having two different hugely expensive power sources when only one is needed is beyond belief.

B/ The wind tower operators are guaranteed to be paid for the power they produce when the wind blows though suffer no financial responsibility for when they carn't supply power. Imagine if yer could get a paying job like that - Turn up for work when yer feel like it, feck around for half an hour, maybe don't work for a while or maybe just come in once a week and work for a day. And all your work time you get paid ten times or more the market rate for your 'variable' efforts. In the meantime the employer needs to keep a full time paid employee on stand by to work when Mr Wind Power couldn't be bothered... 035_doh.gif.37538967d128bb0e6085e5fccd66c98b.gif

    Nuff fer now...

    .

    Oh dear!

The plural of anecdote is not evidence - but there are many in the community who believe it is.

Just give us some verified data Mr Binghi.........please.........

  5. if you want to see a graph that makes sense, look no further than the Pastafarian bible - within the pages of that magnificent book there is a graph that compares the reduction in pirates (the proper ones, with an eye patch and a parrot on their shoulder) with the increase in planet temperatures - the results are plain to see.  All we need to fix this mess is to start building replicas of the Black Pearl, fit them out with proper pirates, and send them off onto the stormy seas....as far as this planet is concerned, imho it's a shame (as per the movie) that homo sapiens arose to superiority instead of the apes - they would have looked after the planet.  My final piece of wisdom for you all is that IF we manage to stop the incredible degradation we have caused and the planet manages to survive as a place for 'some' animals to live, I will be very surprised.  What we are doing is too little too late - we could do a lot more but we must have growth, so we'll stumble along, the rich will get richer and build impregnable castles within walls and manage their own food, while outside those walls it will look a lot like the Mad Max movie - only worse...

there endeth the rant...I'm so glad I didn't breed, and I'm even gladder that I won't be around to see what humans end up doing to this planet (and the remnant poor people)

    BP

BP that's all fine except that what about reincarnation?  Also growth is not a necessity.  Sustainability is a necessity.  When we humans get this and change our systems to repair and to create true sustainability then we might have a chance.  BTW flying recreationally is NOT sustainable in any way shape or form - but we still do it.  DuH!

  6. I'm surprised they aren't fitted with a stall warning system. Is that the case in Australia also? Most planes from that era have them fitted and the places they operate from would suggest it would be needed.. I'm quite surprised about that . Its not small and carries a few pax. When people comment about their planes benign stall I'm always sceptical . I've long been a critic of how we cover stalling. recall the flying boat at Perth not long ago . Nev

Best advice for anyone flying - Go out with an instructor in a suitable and capable A/c and stall the beejesus out of it. All speeds, fully developed spins, all attitudes and all kinds of recovery techniques. Demystify the stall and the spin. Then when it actually happens in your "gentle stalling A/c' your reaction/response is automatic and safe.

I once did a dynamic stall in a Drifter of all things. Flying, turning and in a blink we were not flying. Nose down and rudder fixed it before the ground did.

  7. As a re

If you fly gliders out of Camden, or use the airspace southwest between Bankstown and Camden, I wonder if you can give me some information?Have you noticed any changes in the strength or direction in the winds, or in the behaviour of thermals over the past five years or so?

The background for my question is that, over the past five years, there has been an explosive increase in the area which has changed from pasture land to residential use. The majority of houses which have been built have dark coloured roofs.

What I am wondering is, "Has the heat stored in these dark coloured roofs due to their low albedo resulted in increased heating of the air moving over the residential areas, thereby increasing the size and strength of thermals, and increasing the strength of the afternoon nor'easterlies.

Albedo is the measure of diffusive reflection of solar radiation out of the total solar radiation received by a body. A high albedo means it reflects a lot of solar energy and a low albedo means it absorbs a lot of solar energy

Here are some sample albedo values. The range of possible values is from zero (totally unreflective) to one (fully reflective).

    New asphalt, 0.04 - 0.05

    Aged asphalt, 0.1 - 0.12

    Bare soil, 0.17

    Deciduous trees, 0.15 - 0.18

    Green grass, 0.25

    Aged concrete, 0.2 - 0.3

    New concrete (traditional), 0.4 - 0.55

New concrete with white portland cement, 0.7 - 0.8

    Water, 0.03 - 1.0

    Soil (Dark/Wet) 0.05

    Soil (Light/Grey) 0.4

    Sand 0.15 - 0.45

    galvanized steel - 0.24

    terra cota tile - 0.28

    tar & gravel - 0.33

Notice that the good old terracotta tile has an higher albedo than trees, so the old areas of Sydney might be cooler than the the bush they replaced.

And I'll castrate the first bloke who introduces libido to the discussion.

As a regular viewer of the National Rainfall Radar page on BOM, I often notice a concentration of cloud/rain/storms around Sydney, Melbourne and the built up areas around Brisbane/SEQ, especially with a bit of temp and humidity around.

  8. Clearly the weather where you blokes are is socked in. Suggestion: Roll the hangar doors open, push the flying machine out in the sunshine (when the weather clears), top up the tanks, do a good pre-flight and go do some flying. It's quite fun you know. :)

  9. Hello

hey Glenn, can you let me know what the situation is with other pilots tagging along for some of the legs - I am retired, have 200 hours on 0455 (which is currently having an overhaul, including a new 582)I understand that there could be some logistics issues involved with bookings but I can assure you that 0455 and I will be good to go at the time

    looking forward to your reply

    BP

PS....I'm an ex teabag pilot - was El Presidento of the Canungra Hang-gliding Club for a spell there...one of the greatest thrills of my life was sharing a thermal with a big Wedge-tailed Eagle - he happily shared it with me for 15 mins.

Hello BP Seems like there are not the numbers to orgainse the trip in the original format. Quite a bit of initial interest but then 'there are dreamers and there are doers'. We might still do the trip but with a different vehicle and V small numbers. I will keep you posted if you can send me an email [email protected] Cheers Glenn

  10. Your welcome to come ! Located near Gladstone ! You would have known Joe Scott RIP,Follow Belmore River in and can't miss it !

    Photo of Crescent head !

Gosh it looks familiar! One day we had amazing lift off the east face and got to about 1200'. Floated all the way to Richos Crossing. And yes I certainly did know Joey. Taught him to fly! I do hope he is in peace now.

G`Day Glen, If you are flying costal, then up the Goldsborough Valley to Atherton, my photos will show you what it looks like...On the GE photos the area inside the blue line is our property...The red line is my main strip and it runs 7...25, it is 510 mts from end to end...In our area, June can be very wet but weather permiting, I keep the strip well mowed and there`s nothing on it that can damage tyres...I flew a Zenith CH 701 off it many times and never had any problems...You will all be welcome.

    Frank.

Love the view from the Drifter Farri. Brings back some good memories :) Love the pics and will surely have a closer look at your patch as an option. Thanks :) Glenn

  12. Glenn: If you plan to fly into Agnes Water, best to give Bruce or Woody a call first. It is a private strip and the take a very dim view of people just lobbing in without permission. Having said that, they are very friendly and quite happy to let flyers use the strip. From memory, there was a landing fee expected, but I forget how much. Bruce or Woody will fill you in on the details there. If you are going in numbers, ask Bruce or Woody about contacting Macca for ground transport. He drives a small school bus and is a really great guy, very helpful.

Thanks csc for the advice. Will be getting in contact with all the operators prior to startup. Cheers Glenn

If you decide to head for the coast before Coffs Harbour I have a 800 metre private farm strip between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, just inland from Crescent Head ! you guys are welcome to drop in and stay ! Unleaded close by ! Have a good trip ! Pm if your interested !

Would love to fly around that area again Camel. Spent many hundreds of hours hang gliding off Crescent and had a fly in the prototype two seat Thruster off Walton's strip back in the early 80s. Not this trip but next one maybe. Cheers Glenn

  14. g'day Glenn, sounds like a fabulous trip! twood be wonderful to see the flight do a little detour through the Scenic Rim region, aptly named I might add. if you detoured to the North West from Tyalgah the track (abt 70nm) takes you over Mount Warning and the McPherson Ranges to Boonah. some tiger country there so the best track would be via the Numinbah Valley and Beechmont. from Mt Warning it is abt 40nm to Boonah. to get back to the coast from Boonah you would track East to take you over Beaudesert, past the airfield at Jacobs Well and on to The Spit (just North of Surfers Paradise), where you would turn North for the run up the coast and Caboolture.you would have three options for landing/accom around Boonah:

    1. Boonah Airfield, Flying Tigers Clubhouse for acft tiedown parking, motels, pubs and caravan park not far away - I should be able to help with transport

    2. Roadvale airfield, private owner, 6nm North of Boonah. Camping onsite but I would need to confirm permission from owner - fabulous airfield, I could provide portaloo...

    3. Woolooman airfield, at my residence. only 200 metres long and surrounded by hills - advanced pilots only and insurance may be an issue (look it up on Google Earth at 620 Woolooman Road)

    BP

PS - any chance a Drifter pilot and his mighty machine might tag along for part of the journey???

Hello BP Thanks for your advice. Will look at it in greater detail shortly and add it in to the mix. Will get back to you to follow up. :) Glenn

  15. Well, reality bites!3rd Solo yesterday and a flaw in my landings became an issue yesterday.

I've been having a bit of an issue keeping the plane straight after getting it on the ground. Initial phase of landing and touch down are fine, its the bit immediately after that I was having issues with, ie all wheels on the ground, veering right then harder left as I over corrected.

After a couple of landings where I explored both sides of the strip I pretty much lost the last one and exited the strip to the left, hard left! taking a marker cone with me.

At no stage was I fearful of getting hurt, more worried about bending the plane.

So this morning, back at it with the instructor doing dual circuits. We did a debrief and review of yesterdays circuits and landings and what I though I was doing right and wrong.

Early on we worked out that I've been so focussed on getting the plane down smoothly that it was unlikely that I was looking up to the end of the strip, just keeping my eyes fixed about 10m in front of the nose.

So we did a couple of landings with a determined effort to look to the end of the strip just at the hold off. The touch downs were heavier than last weeks solos, but the thing just tracked down the middle of the strip.

So now I'm back to working on my landings for the next lesson or 2, working on my flare and hold off.

    Better now than later.

    Cheers

    Ross

Relax! And have fun! Sounds like you might be trying too hard to become an expert too quickly. Smile all the way down final :)

  16. 3 July 1992Benalla Aerodrome became a Council asset under a deed between the Council and Commonwealth of Australia.

No mention of a payment for this asset.

When the aerodrome was handed from Commonwealth to the local council, a VERY large sum of $s came with it so council could invest it and carry out ongoing maintenance with the interest. It would probably have been in the millions of dollars.

  17. Lots of info about the area from west of Townsville through to Atherton and then Port Douglas.Basically - yep stay west of cairns. All ctr along the coast.

Long long drive for the support cars. Roads there go in huge arcs in places.

But it's a long long flight at 60 knots too I suppose.

If weather is dodgy don't attempt direct into atherton. High tiger country from Mt Garnet (YMRT) to Ravenshoe to Atherton that clouds in first hint of humidity. Ok to plan it for a clear day but also plan to go up the interior to abeam Mareeba (At about Petford) and come east in the valley from Petford to Dimbulah (YDIM) to Mareeba (YMBA) then back south to Atherton. Let us know when you are gonna be in Atherton. Maybe we can arrange a welcoming party.

Plenty more local info that I can add but the list would go on for pages.

Hello Jaba Thanks for all that. Great stuff. I have a rough idea of the tablelands but the locals know it best. Will add your advice/ideas to the planning and perhaps contact you through the forum later on for some of the nitty gritty. Appreciated :) Glenn

  18. Going to Agnes. The prevailing wind is from the SE. Don’t be tempted if there is no wind at the windsock to take off NW. The wind could still be a Soueaster above the trees, lead into a very poor rate of climb. Experience talking here.Rods Bay strip is between rail and highway 15 nm SE of Gladstone. 800m grass strip. If you need help in this area contact me.

Thankyou for the advice Yenn. I have taken your advice on board and will be very useful once the planning gets firmed up- and will be in touch re the other strip you mentioned. I'll look at a map first. Thanks again. Glenn
