Have you had that happen? I often asked for flight following and it is rare to have it refused....
I’ve never had it refused and use it 4/5 of my longer flights. Always with a flight plan in the system. Since the Mangalore accident they’ve been extremely vocal about potential traffic conflicts which is nice I think ?

It was the one near Mount Isa. I thought the 177 was covered by the service letter, but doesn't seem to be by the AD.

Filling long range tanks on the 182 is an Ouch at 359 litres of Avgas, But probably a lot less of an ouch will be if it stops in a bad place. I find the gauges are useless and dip it every time then fill to brim if going somewhere as I burn 50LPH.
I think I need a smaller plane.
Yeah but with a smaller plane you won't have the luxury of filling it to the brim, chucking four people in it and heading off!

There was another bloke on here a while ago, Roger Ramjet I think he called himself, who was having the same problem. I think he was in Canberra too. Same instructor I wonder?

I write the distance from the next way point in the right margin. Also do this for ToD. As has been said, you should always know exactly where you are even without a GPS. Then when you depart and you get your log happening you'll know what time these events will occur.
Eg. ML 135.25 YORG -35, 04 (Station, Freq, WPT, distance out, ETA)
YORG TOD -17, 16

Yeah, but if you're in IMC, as the speculation is saying with this incident, looking out the window won't achieve much.

I heard on the ABC news this morning it was an RAA registered Bristell.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

Hi All,
Does anyone know any places to land that are pleasant enough to land at and have a bite to eat? Especially if there's some shade, and a safe place for the kids to have a run around to stretch their legs.
I'm in Central West NSW, so suggestions vaguely near to me appreciated but I'm sure others would be interested Australia wide.
- Crookwell is scenic, but it's BYO shade and no loo.
- Narromine has a fenced area near apron with a covered picnic table.
- Khancoban has some lovely big trees and a toilet
Thanks,
Tom

Parkes has TAF and METAR service which include smoke forecast and visibility observations.

He's very good.

I think with an RPL you’ll also need CTA, CTR and Flight Radio endorsements.

I suspect your mate is right. I got my RPC in 23 hours, then another 6 or so for RPL. You'd have to be getting the RAAus aircraft a fair bit cheaper to warrant the muck around IMO. Unless you can find a dual school.

I flew in briefly on Saturday morning in a C152. I enjoyed it, though sadly had to head home sooner than I'd have liked before the cold front affected my home base beyond what I'd be comfortable with.
I thought that the event was good, everyone seemed in a good mood, plenty of planes to look at. Taxied past a nosewheel-less Cheetah I think on arrival.

I have about 50 hours in a 20,000+ hour PA28 used pretty much exclusively for training it'e entire life. Am I lucky to be alive? Or is this a beat up?

Go find a GA instructor and do a flight review. You'll also have to do 2 hours under the hood. In total it took me 5.7 hours.

Took me 37 mins to get to 9,500 ft at just under MTOW on a 25° day once ?"Curvature of the earth", that is funny. But they are not quite that bad.
A Cherokee 140 on the other hand relies on the madly sweating pilot and passengers stink to repel from the ground. Even mother nature has a sense of smell.

I gave it a go, clearance was declined. Got through BCG and CFS no problem though. No Problem. By the way, dont be afraid to give it a go. On a quiet day, you will occasionally get cleared through Brisbane. For me its been a rare event though. -
Thanks for the advice Pearo.NOT ATC, but: Try it, but its unlikely you will get clearance through BNE CTR/CTA.Lodge a flight plan, call center on the ground for code/clearance, on the off chance you get clearance they will hand you off to APP/DEP once established, but be prepared for APP/DEP to kick you back out. That has been my experience 99% of the time. You wont need to contact ACD,.
At a lower level, you might get cleared some of the way. I would plan coastal if I was you and I would count on being in class G
If cleared from YBBN into YBCG, they will hand you to YBCG tower. No difference to being in any other controlled airspace and moving into the next sector.
If VFR, Clearance though YBCG will be usually be given, ask for overwater but be prepared to be sent inland due to incoming RPT traffic or be prepared to hold a Q1. Gold Coast is getting busy, its getting pretty hard to get clearance overwater, but if you want it they might sned you west when not available, then send you back coastal once the RPT aircraft are out of the way. Gold Coast Tower controllers are good, even when they are flat out.

Hello ATCers,
If I wanted to depart YCAB direct YBNA at A055 or A075 how would I go about it? Type is C182.
I was thinking: put in a flight plan, contact BN Centre on the ground at YCAB to request an Airways Clearance/SSR code, depart YCAB, contact BN ACD once airborne and follow their instructions from there. I assume I would get handed back to Centre and then on to Coolangatta at some point.
Is this the correct way to go about it? Assuming a clearance was forthcoming, can any BN controllers comment/speculate on where I would be likely to get sent? IE would it be quicker than going coastal after getting vectored around or holding for a while?
Cheers,
Tom

As far as I am aware the aircraft must be a RAA-Aus approved factory manufactured aircraft and be 24 registered.
I did my ab-initio in a 23 registered Jab.

Yoke was a loooonngg way back in that turn. Stall warning whistling away I think.
An unfortunate situation for all involved.

Good suggestion, there's one next to YMDG as well.Lunch at a winery works for me. For example. At Brown Brothers Millawa they have a lunch matched with wines and as I am flying my wife gets to drink the lot. Airstrip is over the road from the restaraunt.
Why the C182 specifically? Less bumpy in turbulence or she'll like the big six cylinder burble?Take your wife on a short flight when it's calm and cool in the c182.
Yep even I concur with that. They are usually Impressed with early morning, no bump flights to the coast, not the roller coaster ride coming home too late in the day over the range. ( my experience has found this out, very green coloured passengers upon return journeys)Take her for a late summer afternoon phat in a Drifter, if she doesn't like that, ditch her and get one that does.
What are Franco's vids?More risky than buying a second hand aeroplane.. getting rid of a wife and breaking in a new one. Much as I (personally LOVE a drifter, not everybody feels there is "enough" around them, and they have all heard stories about ultralights "falling " out of the sky. Show her ALL of Franco's vids and work up to it gradually. Nev
How do I remember when to change frequencies?

Or ADSB if you’re that way inclined.
