Probably more my concern is the way the CEO says the following:

 

"...I am a little concerned by these accidents...it is too early in any of these occurrences to fully understand the causal factors"

 

"We won’t be throwing the book at any member, we want to learn and understand what went wrong, so we can use that as a tool to both educate those involved, but also educate our broader membership.

 

Those words jumped off the virtual page when I read them - if it is "too early to fully understand the factors" then why make a statement about not throwing the book? That already infers that there has been some determination that "a member" is to blame. The statement would have read much better without the mention of books being thrown.

 

 

I find the intellectual exercise of using map, compass, chronometer and whizz wheel most enjoyable. However, it is only enjoyable while sitting at a desk doing the pre-flight planning. 

 I am with you there.  As easily as I can plan a flight on Avplan I still enjoy planning it on the VTC/VNC and then calculating GS/Wind Correction etc. manually.  I fly with Avplan but still have the paper chart in the bag with the lines marked up on it.

 

 

I did my RPC pretty much on the minimums - I threw in a few local area PIC flights whilst I was going through my X-Country. I think the biggest thing that helped me keep the hour count low was a consistent schedule - I pretty much locked my Instructor in for 7am Saturday morning every weekend for a lesson. Then I also made sure to do as much pre-reading and prep before each flight so I was pre-briefed. What can suck up a lot of hours is if you have an inconsistent schedule and so need to spend a bit of time replacing lost skills while learning. I would find if I missed a week the first 15mins in the air was a bit of readjustment.

 

But I guess the main thing is enjoy it - I had a rocking RPC instructor and our flights whilst instructional and educational were a heck of a lot of fun and some great laughs. Especially during X-Country when you have a bit more time to have a good chat! #makeflyingfun :)

As I have said before - Stephen - I hope that Jeremy guy passes his PPL and gets his Instructor ticket - otherwise who the heck has been instructing me for all this time!!!!! :)
