  1. Hey everyone!

I'm planning on getting a temporary CoV license conversion for a trip from Canada to Australia in September, but I'd like to do my due diligence before I even think about flying down under. This entails learning about all of the available aviation publications, airspace designations, etc. All of this, to my knowledge, should be available in a ground school. I'm wondering if there is a really well-structured, professional Australian PPL/CPL ground school available online somewhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  2. hey PP, make sure you take advantage of offers like this from Hongie, they are truly Gold - some areas in NE Queensland (around Mackay, for instance) have a 'fascinating' mix of airspace, weather and terrain 'problems' - airspace won't be a problem for you and that is a very good thing. We have an old saying here in Oz - "mountains hide in clouds" - I suppose that's the same the world over really...One concept you might consider is doing what many visitors to Oz do - they buy a 'vehicle', use it in Oz at their leisure, then sell it when it's time to go home. Undoubtedly there are a number of negatives with the concept. I used to work for a business that sold off-road motorcycles to tourists and then agreed to buy them back at a set price as long as the vehicle was within the set of parameters agreed upon. Some of these (well fitted out) bikes had word of mouth bookings to go to a new rider a week after they got back.

With the guvment of this country hell bent on destroying aviation in this country you might even find a real nice little 150 for sale here - of course, getting it sold to recoup your outlay may be 'problematic' - there are other options too - you could leave it in the safe hands of a flying school on lease until it was sold, or you could use word of mouth at home to make it 'available' for hire in Oz. One thing leads to another and the next thing you know you are the go to man for pilots wanting to fly in Oz - because you know how to do it! As in, talk to me, for a fee I will arrange all the paperwork, flights to/from Oz, nice little 150 waiting for you, all done and dusted and you make a few bucks doing it.

Now the guys on this forum will tell you why none of the above can happen, but you never know - it might just work out for you. Cheers, and make sure you let me know when you are landing at Boonah YBOA.

sorry, in case you aren't aware, the RAAus licence does not allow flight through controlled airspace - you need a real (GA) licence for that.....

Thanks for all the tips! As for your last point, however, I'm not getting an RAAus, I'm getting a CoV which allows me to exercise the privileges of my Canadian PPL. I'm pretty sure that includes flight through controlled airspace in Australia. I will, however, be doing my due diligence and studying what I need to study to make sure I'm prepared before flying there.

  3. Yes that should meet it, just as long as they allow the face to face meeting on collection of the card. I wish you the best and enjoy flying here.

From what I was told by one of the ASIC issuers is that the face to face meeting is literally just picking up the card, basically just pick it up and show then the physical documents proving my identity. They said that my Canadian Passport, Canadian Pilot License, Canadian Driver's License, etc. will all suffice. Once this is all said and done, and if it works, I will hopefully put together a post/guide for others to follow if they want to do the same thing in the future!

  4. Sounds like a good trip you have planned, If you are around the mackay area, I'll show you around if you are keen

Thank you! I just might take you up on that come September!

As for ASIC, I have called two other ASIC issuers and they have both said that my "Holiday Flying on a CoV" plan should be sufficient for meeting the "Operational Need" requirement of the ASIC. Good news, I hope?

  5. The problem for the ASIC is the in person interview to verify the person. See if you can find some way to get around it it: give these guys a call: Aviation Security Identification Cards as they might be able to talk you through it.

That's interesting. When I spoke with CASA regarding the process for getting an ASIC, an in-person interview was never mentioned, but I see that change was made August 2017. It says the face-to-fave interview is required "when collecting [my] ASIC."

  6. Hi Alex. It can be done but requires months of planing and paperwork because of our useless regulator. To fly to any airfield that has regular public transport requires an ASIC. Depending on how many hours you plan on flying it’s probably much easier just to find an instructor you get on with and fly with them.

Good thing I've got 5+ months to plan! They won't accept my CoV application until 3 months prior to my trip, but I've started on the paperwork already. I don't want to rent a plane and instructor, I want to fly myself around and not be locked to someone else's schedule, so my plan is to buy bulk time from a private owner. From the calls I've made to CASA, the process seems relatively straightforward. Submit my application for my CoV, submit my application for my ASIC, then once they are both approved, I will be able to pick up my documents when I land in Australia.

  7. Hello everybody! I did a quick Google search for "Australian Aviation Forum" and this came up in the results! I'm looking for a bunch of information, but first why don't I introduce myself?

My name is Alex, I'm 26 and I've been PPL Licensed for a little over two years, and I just sent in the paperwork for my CPL. I'm planning a vacation to Australia at the end of September and I'll be looking to get my PPL converted and to purchase some bulk time on a small single-engine aircraft such as a Cessna 150, probably somewhere along the east coast.

    Nice to meet you all!
