any one got any good ideas on removing a stripped gear box magnetic plug on a rotax 912 and where to get a new one, not with a torx fitting, more a square drive or a nut top.

went to check the plug on the motor i bought but it was stripped and i do not want to make more of a mess.

is the torx drive stripped or the thread holding it in?

If it is the torx end you may have to drill it and use an 'easy out'. or try a small chisel and hammer and get on the edge and slowly tap it loose.

Assuming it's the torx that's stripped, a cold chisel and a sequence of light taps with a hammer should do the trick.

Rotax provides a replacement plug with a standard nut head. Call Wal. Not cheap but much better ($60?)

The plug looks exactly like a BMW motorcycle one. They are an internal hex key. Bloody useless! The thing that ALWAYS released them was :- before any loosening attempt is made, give the plug a good sharp blow with a hammer. This will work, if the hex is damaged then, as others have posted, a series of hits with a chisel around the edge will do it. BUT hit the plug first......Geoff
