Herald-Sun report 2:09 pm.

A LIGHT plane has crashed near Bendigo with three people listed as casualties.

Emergency services are at the scene where the light plane came to grief, near Huntly, on Bendigo’s outskirts, about 1pm.

One person was killed in the crash. It is not known whether it was the pilot or one of two passengers on board.

Flames coming from the plane were doused by firefighters.

Three fire trucks, SES and police were called to the scene at a private airstrip on the Epsom-Barnadown Rd.

One of the passengers, a man in his 60s, was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition with burns.

Another man, also aged in his 60s, suffered serious abrasions and was taken to the Alfred Hospital.

Police are believed to be investigating whether the single-engine craft clipped power lines before coming down.

The Age 3:02 pm

One man is dead and two others are seriously injured after a light plane crashed in central Victoria this afternoon.

Police say the men were flying from Montrose to Bendigo in a Cessna 172 single engine plane. They were attempting to land at a private airstrip near Bagshot, north of Bendigo, when the plane clipped power lines just after 1pm.

The plane brought down the power lines and burst into flames on impact.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said one survivor was in a critical condition with serious burns. A second survivor is in a stable condition with serious injuries.

Both have been flown to The Alfred hospital.

The three men are believed to be in their 60s.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the wreckage, which was doused in foam.

Bugger, not much left of the 172, the fire must have been extreme temperature even though the surrounding grass is not burnt that much. Why they put powerlines near airports or landing grounds is a real mystery!

This just through from the owner of the airfield......

Dear valued customers,

For those of you unaware, there was a tragic accident here on Monday. As a result all permission to land that has been granted previously is hereby withdrawn.

I will be making some changes to procedures and the airfield layout in the next few days. When this is complete I will email you all a new "Hold Harmless Agreement' & airstrip details. You will then be granted permission to operate from here again when the new documents are signed & returned.

If you have any urgent maintenance requirements please phone. For non-urgent things please email.

Thank you all for your many offers of support during this extremely upsetting time.
