A MAF Presence at the Bundy Air Show

A lot of boys and young men dream of soaring into the skies in a flying machine. Some make a career of it.

But few know about the added joy of flying aircraft into the world's most remote locations with the specific aim of helping to meet the needs of others. Pilots from Mission Aviation Fellowship know all about that and will be at the Bundaberg Air Show early in July to talk about it.

In fact a team of five MAF representatives, including pilots and former pilots, will occupy an exhibitor's site (number 10) in the Burnett Pavillion from July 3- 5 where they will welcome visitors.

Air Show visitors will be encouraged to ask about the challenges, for example, of flying over the remote jungles of Papua New Guinea or delivering vital supplies to isolated indigenous homeland communities in Arnhem Land.

MAF Area Representative for Queensland, Mr Jonathan Dillon, said he and the other MAF staff would be present to meet visitors and raise awareness of the work of MAF around the world.

"The international air show is the second biggest in Australia," he said. "MAF will be there because we want to showcase MAF to the aviation community and let people know about the life-saving work that MAF is performing in almost 40 countries around the world.

"We believe a big-hearted organisation like MAF should be in attendance where Queensland's biggest crowd of aviation enthusiasts will be gathered. We urge people to come down and have a chat with us."

The MAF exhibit at the Bundy Airshow will feature a display of books and photographs, DVD presentations, giveaways, MAF literature and a special ‘mystery' competition. Visitors will be invited to place their details on a mailing list to receive the MAF magazine and annual calendar.

Another pic or 2 of typical MAF strips in PNG. Pilots undergo a lot of training beyond their CPL to be able to handle these with a grossed up aircraft.

happy days,

Are you going up to Emerald for Agrow?

No, Family camp, and then probably go and visit some friends at Clermont. They got 20,000 acres or so...

poteroo: Yes it's an amazing place PNG... A friend was a pilot there for 20 something yrs... He's got some amazing stories!

Did you do some flying there?

Tomo,

Indeed. All flying '65 to '70 ex Port Moresby, but up there from '61. ANO 28.1 exemption for all over charter ops in PNG.

There are probably others on these forums who were also there?? Am tempted to place a new thread under 'General Discussion' to provide for posting some more 'interesting strips' pics. Could it be 'sticky'd' for a few weeks until we see what turns up? Mods??

Ref the pics you posted initially - I used to live, ('61-'62), just a couple miles toward the mountains, behind the Twin Otter in the 1st pic you posted. A little primitive, but some of the most interesting times a 20 year old could ever experience.

happy days,

Good idea Poteroo, Either that, or just put them in the Gallery under what ever title you fancy. Either way, it will be good to see...
