  1. Thanks for the explanation. The word "NON-INDEPENDENT" is what caused the confusion (for me & 2 others). Replacing it with SIMUL (simultaneous) would have been preferable. And btw, we rang the number given (no answer), left a voice mail msg requesting a call back & 4 days later - still no response.

  2. Current YBTH notam (below) indicates the RAAF cadets have a gliding camp in progress. Power traffic circuits for Rwy 17/ 35 at YBTH are now permanently to the East (ie RH circuits on Rwy 35, LH on 17). Can someone explain what is meant by " ... RWY 17/35 NON-INDEPENDENT CONTRA CCTS. PARL RWY OPS NOT PERMITTED" Thanks, Bill

  3. The problem you have is that you land and taxi to the apron but can't get out. Then how do you contact a person with an ASIC to escort you? Some security airports are easy to exit and access without anyone checking, but others are very strict (Alice and The Rock come to mind).

Yes, it's a crock but be careful the contents aren't tipped over you.

  4. Hi all,Just installed a Becker 4201 into my home built. During power on testing the units led continuously flashed low voltage and shows 7volts.

Voltage check on battery end shows 13v, same as volts on the pins on radio plug.

Anyone had similar problems? Solutions? Hoping maybe it's just pins the need some contact cleaner on them.

    Thanks[/quote

Wondering if you've solved the problem? Thanks, Bill

  5. A work colleague is staying at our place at the moment (it's a long weekend). He has an Aussie PPL (he lived in Aus for a couple of years ago). We were discussing overseas flying and he had stated that since the ASIC/AVID, he had stopped visiting Aus altogether - usually goes to the US (Florida) or Canada now. Although he does intend to go to NZ shortly to fly.Another great score fo pollies/civil servants - inward looking - make a bi of money at the longer term cost to the industry.

If you are found airside without an ASIC, who fines / prosecutes you? (CASA, airport operator, police?) Are there any stats / FOI figures to indicate how many have been fined / prosecuted?

  6. Hire a swage machine at about $60 day , I did 75 swages in 1 day on 4.5mm ss cable easy as

Hi Gareth, where did you hire the swage machine? Was it a "roller" type or "nicopress" tool? I've heard that some yachting supply / shipwrights can do "roller" swaging. Rgds, Bill

  7. How the bureacracy works (or doesn't )

Nov 2013 The Aviation Safety Regulation Review (chaired by Forsyth) is commissioned

June 2014. Forsyth hands the report to the Governement.

    Recommendation 36

The Australian Government amends regulations so that background checks and the requirement to hold an Aviation Security Identification Card are only required for unescorted access to Security Restricted Areas, not for general airside access. This approach would align with international practice.

The recommendations were handed to The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development for review and implementation in July 2014.

As at 31 December 2015 (regarding Recommendation 36)

Action: In the first half of 2015 the Government will commence consultation with industry on any potential changes to the scope of the ASIC scheme.

Status: Industry was consulted during 2015 via a discussion paper, airport site visits and industry forums. The Department will provide advice, taking into account industry comments, on these issues, to the Government for its consideration in the first half of 2016.

As at 25 August 2016 (regarding Recommendation 36)

Action: In the first half of 2015 the Government will commence consultation with industry on any potential changes to the scope of the ASIC scheme.

Status: Completed. The Department has consulted industry and significant implementation issues have been identified. Further progress will be considered as part of a review of the current categorisation of security controlled airports.

So ....... The Department has consulted industry (would that have included RAA, AOPA, both of whom made submissions?)

...... significant implementation issues have been identified ( like what ?? )

  8. From Little Things Big Things GrowI am suggesting boycotting major aviation events - no pilots - no planes (flying). Not talking about your local fly-in's. The serious big industry events. Any risk that they might be negatively impacted would get a whole lot of attention.

It is just not good enough that anyone should have to pay a cent towards an unjustifiable law or feel guilty/uneasy about flouting it.

In truth our representatives, bureaucrats & lawmakers have let us down badly on the ASIC matter. Something so asinine should have been fixed as soon as it became apparent it was achieving so very little. Yet it remains. Why? I would suggest shear bloody minded inertia.

The polite within the system, (representation, lobbying, rational argument, etc) clearly has had no discernible impact.

Hell will freeze over before any of our pollies take up this matter with genuine interest.

Sometimes people power is the only alternative to a disinterested body politic.

Bad law must be removed or changed, not just ignored

  9. Gooday Bill,There was one in a shed near me - it was replaced with a Jab 2200, and to my knowledge was a ruuning concern at the time. I'll ring the owner tonight to see if it's still there and get back to you.

    Any luck John? Thanks, Bill

  11. X-Air are offering a thermostat for Jab / Rotax engines to maintain oil temp above 100C.

Price $220 + P&H. Details on the X-Air web page.

Has anyone fitted one of these? Any comments / advice?

    Thanks, Bill

  12. Brian, just to clarify. The section of pipe (~30mm long) welded to the muffler does not appear to be cracked at the weld. The exhaust pipe, which has a smaller OD, is inserted into the pipe section on the muffler. From the maint. manual no gasket is used to seal the join. The exhaust gas leak appears to be from between the exhaust pipe / muffler join. It'll be 10 days before I can get to the a/c to check the weld again. Regards, Bill

  13. Our J160C has developed a leak at the junction of the RHS rear exhaust pipe / muffler. There is no cracking or corrosion evident. TTIS 160Hrs. Any suggestions / comments appreciated. Thanks, Bill
