  1. The best STOL machine i ever flew is a gyro, but then you expected that huh, t/o 150mts landing 10mts if i balls it up, shorter if its done right, cruise at 70kts.

Everytime i think of going fw i just keep coming back to the gyros again.

  2. Bones, Ive pointed out previously that when I picked up my 230 from Tully heads and flew it direct Adelaide, that I had Telstra coverage for about 80% of the way and when you draw that line on a map there really isnt that much out there so 80% is astoundingly good in my opinion. between Aramac and Noccundra Hotel would be a whole lot less populated than around Charters Towers I would have thought.... Mind you, I didnt fly at 150ft and coverage available was merely a function of height. more is good most is better

    Andy

That wasnt around here, it is leaving Boula heading basically west, nothing but the odd camel out that way...

  3. Its all dependant on the a/c also i believe, i carry a elt, a sat phone, and i of course still have my mobile(not that its worth a pinch of sh*t), but here is the thing, the elt is behind my head and the sat phone is in bag of gear, neither i can reach from my seat, not that i have time as i only fly at about 150' anyway, and 4 hrs of flying over nothing but sand and trees, no piont going any higher, but you see if the fan stops for me, i can sit it down anywhere with no forward roll. so if im that bad i cant reach either elt/sat phone, not much piont finding whats left huh.

I know people as gonna say thats a crappy attitude, but i been doing it for long enough to know my limits

  4. Yep even here in the towers, the wind is big, the big fig trees are just, just hanging on from the looks, this is only the start of it here, bloody hell its gonna hurt.

Nd you know what really gob smached me the most, there is planes about 6 with not a single rope on them, and all the ones in the open front hangar about another 6 not tied down either, so if the wind turns they will all be piled up in the corner, WTF ????

  5. Well I appreciate humor bones... Please... Not about this!

Windsor, im not joking im flying right just about exactely where they estimate ol mate Anthony to be on monday morning at 4 am, dont think ill both rushing out of bed, or and better remember to tie me ol girl to the tree i guess.

  6. Yep it ****es off alot of people up here at YCHT also, they shut the whole damn airport down, cant even use the cross strip, i had a student fly up from NSW, too bad they put in a NOTAM, so they can do what the hell they want, even run and operate a licanced bar on the airport grounds, and we cant even have a beer in the hangar after flying without risk of being busted.

Basically Sue there appears to be bugga all you can do, the strip appears to be holding up so far, they had about 4-5 drag meets, but the strip was just top dressed for them, not us, go work that out.

  7. At oil changes the oil is dark but I have been assured by a number of experienced people as well as airborne themselves that oil changes need only be done every 100hrs. The rotax manual quotes 100hrly services. I have been told that 50hr services are overservicing the engine. I can understand why people do it though. It is an aircraft after all. I was very reluctant to increase the service interval. On another note, a check of my oil filter residue should reveal if any damage is being done to the engine internals and hence confirm whether the pressure issues are a problem or not.

I know people who drop the oil/ filter at 25hrs that to me is over serviceing, but damn i know 50 hrs comes around quick when your busy, but its a reason not to get out of bed early one morning out of 5 :)

  8. All oil and filters have been changed within the allotted 100hrly service intervals. Usually services have been performed around the 50 - 60 hr mark. The last service was done at 90hrs. I know many people do services strictly every 50hrs but according to both airborne and rotax that is not necessary if not running on avgas. I am curently at 80hrs since the last service and will now do it to check for particles in the oil filter. I use shell advance vsx 4 oil and only ever use genuine rotax oil filters. It is only my last two services that have gone more than 50hrs. The engine is now at 479hrs. I am beginning to wonder about what possible engine damage may have been done if these oil readings are real????

What is oil like when you change it, my guess would be it is like tar, i do 50 hr services, and the oil is black as the ace of spades at that, i cant believe people who dont do 50hrs services, whats the price of oil and filters, cheap if you have to strip the motor trust me, thats a good 7k worth there.

I seriously doubt there be any major trouble from the oil press at start up, though, what i normally do if the motor hasnt been run for a couple of weeks is leave igg switches off and wind it over on the starter for 20-30secs, then flick the switches, and start it. try that and see what happens.

  9. Sorry to disagree with the Ferrites idea but we did extensive tests with the ferrites and found that all they did was shift the SQUEALING up or down the frequency range. The cure was better headsets e.g. David Clarks, Lightspeed Zulus, Or BOSE. The Bose were by far the best to cure the transmit squealing. Give Altronics and the cheaper headsets away to save yourself headaches.Nelson

Sorry to disagree with you but this was using the top of the range bose head sets :)

  10. Yeah i would think so, the noise is all feed back of different types, left over bits of power running a muc in your radio and wiring, these things stop them, cant say for sure, but for 10 or 20 bucks it be my first try anyways.

  11. Save yourself the trouble, go to your nearest "dick smith" type store, somewhere that works with computers, and buy a bout 5 Ferrite(sp) resistors, these are the black lumps on all your computer cables, should cost about $2 each, put them on every wire in and out of the radio, they just clip around the wires,,, should be problem fixed.

Took me about 18 months of taking radios out sending them away, only to be told nothing wrong with them, i was having massive mic feed back, the easiest cheapest fix i ever did find, i put them on every radio i fit now, even they dont need them.

PS i have nothing to do with Dick Smith stores, or any computer store that sells this product.

  12. Well yesterday i noticed my odeysee was getting very lazy, down to like 6 volts after hitting the button, took it out, hooked up a 12v drain to it, when it was completely flat, hooked the charger up to it over night, today it was back up to about 11v, on the button, mind you this use is not the normal, it is a constant drain for like 20secs, so i was pleasantly surpised it picked back up.

For how long is the big question though, this battery is 4 years old too mind you.

  13. I got that info from SAAA and assume that it was built under their jurisdiction. Wether it is right or not it points up something that could bring down the wrath of all the authorities

Well i was talking to ........ the other day, he knows the plane/family ect, and it was of his thoughts it was still testing phase too, and a couple of other things also.

  14. Bones baby,I didn't shoot you down mate, you will get little argument from me on a proper aero engine, the discussion was that not everyone can afford an approved engine. You didn't tell us what you meant by a real engine when we asked you..... Now we know, I agree a proper aero engine is always better especially when doing the engine critical stuff. I could be a real, bitch here and say that I am not sure I'd even trust that other very common air cooled real engine doing the same engine critical stuff though.:peepwall:

    David:laugh:

Nd i really couldnt care :)

  15. flying between trees in an isolated area looks like a recipe for disaster, legal or otherwise

I thought id get a few comments like that, you see if you saw what we can actually do you would realise, this type of stuff is a walk in park with a beer in the hand :)

Nd yep with a 912 up ya butt ill fly anywhere/anytime, you really need to be able to trust your engine, this is why i got shoot down on the other thread for recomended some one getting a REAL engine.

Would any others like to follow us in car engine machines???????

  16. just to really throw the cat amoungst the pigueons have a look at these;

These was filmed all over his own property, so there is no legal problems :)
