    Hi Lance,

    Have things dried up around the Ridge yet?

     

    Lightning Ridge airport provided the most challenging landing on our northern NSW tour last year, but that could just have been the weather on the day.

     

    I think my home state NSW would score far better in this thread if you could fly coastal from Merimbula to Tyagarah without needing a PPL or higher.

     

     

  2. I have to agree with Volksy rather than Dazza.

     

    The alternative to CASA would be the RAAF. As I understand it the RAAF owns all Oz airspace and lends it to CASA . . . or something like that.

     

    Without guessing what RAAF's policy would be wrt Private/Recreational Aviation, it comes down to the old "Might Is Right".

    I looked through the first few pages of this section of the forums before starting this thread but I suppose it was a few more pages back.

     

    I just noticed the website of the USA vendor I bought it from says this about their fibreglass tanks, "Internal walls of our tanks are coated with the same compound commonly used in the marine industry". I guess I'll have to ask them what that is.

  4. I'm going to be fitting a 10 US Gallon Fibreglass fuel tank to the Buzzard trike (95.10 Rego) I rebuilt a few years back as an upgrade from the existing 5 US Gallon fuel tank.

    The existing 5 Gallon tank is a standard Quicksilver XL tank and the new tank is marketed as an upgrade for it.

     

    I know people have concerns about fibreglass tanks and my specific question in this thread is whether I should coat the inside of the tank with some substance to prevent fine fibreglass particles getting into the downstream fuel system, and if so, what should I coat it with?

This sort of behaviour is probably encouraged by the smartphone advertisement currently on TV showing someone using their untethered smartphone to take video and stills while skydiving, which I personally think is pretty ridiculous - just think of the wind buffeting, let alone the likelihood of loosing the phone.

     

    Personally I won't even use or mount my iPhone in my trike due to the lack of any provision for a tether. When it goes flying with me its inside a zipped up pocket of a garment that's underneath my flight suit.

     

     

  6. Hi Graham,

     

    Sounds to me like you could have experienced some sheer layer turbulence. Sometimes it's confined to a thin band of altitudes and other times its quite spread out. It's a bit of an art to tell whether bumps are due to thermals, terrain or sheer . . . but learning what to look for can help though sheer is the one that can typically creep up with little or no visual clues and can have ups and downs too.

    Interesting, here's CAR 157 (1), which the HGFA Op's manual refers to. CAR 157 (1) does not apear to prohibit flight over built-up or closely settled areas but instead just confirms the understanding of the altitude restriction for RAAus registered trikes under CAO-95.32.

    CIVIL AVIATION REGULATIONS 1988 - REG 157

     

    Low flying

     

    (1) The pilot in command of an aircraft must not fly the aircraft over:

     

    (a) any city, town or populous area at a height lower than 1,000 feet; or

     

    (b) any other area at a height lower than 500 feet.

     

    Penalty: 50 penalty units.

     

     

  8. To extend upons John's post #4, memory tells me there is also something like "unless in the act of taking off or landing", but then that could be to do with the 500ft AGL minimum height rule that applies outside built up areas . . .

     

    If landing at an airstrip with closely settled areas in the circuit area I tend to do circuits 1,000ft above aerodrome level, rather than the 500ft circuit trikes can qualify for at < 55kts.

    In a secondary sense . . .

     

    A good friend is starting on his Kitfox taildragger kit. Which the Skyfox is copied from (so I'm told), several generations back.

     

    I'm assuming there are no Kitfox trainers in Australia and the Skyfox is the closest alternative.

    You say it's a GRS, not a BRS . . .

     

    GRS come from Czech Republic in Eastern Europe, not from the USA like BRS does. Then again maybe BRS is offering to repack your GRS?

     

    I bought a GRS-450 in 2004 from an Australian dealer who cannot be mentioned here. (Literally, his name gets changed to "*****").

     

    I handed my GRS back to the dealer to send for a new rocket & repack at Temora Natfly 2011 and apparently the factory has just received it. The Oz dealer is taking care of the shipping back to his Oz location (different state and 10 hours drive each way for me), where I'll need to collect it from. Expected cost is a bit under $2k.

    That's about $8,850 in extra's, so I still haven't been able to work out how the cost reaches $88k. Couldn't be $10k+ in flight training surely . . . training should be a separate expense and not included as part of the aircraft purchase in this exercise.

    Come to think of it, Quicksilver was there, but didn't feature the 65hp 4-stroke engine they did in previous years. I think the Airborne trike you saw in the display area belonged to Punkinhead who do the aircraft covers & pilot supplies.

    How did you find the flight to Temora and back to Goulburn? I wasn't too sure about how the forecast looked for the return flight and ended up driving.

     

    I had thought of towing my slower Wizard-winged trike but the thought of being in the Natfly circuit at 35kts didn't appeal when it's hard enough to find a slot in the 60kt+ XT-912.
