Isis Flying Club Inc had to increase their PL from $10mil to $20mil when the Council renewed the lease (for 20 years). It is becoming pretty common.

 

 

I have started a thread for the RAA Election 2019 - so this thread can get back to talking about Avdata & landing fees.

 

 

RAAus is calling for nominations to fill 3 Board positions. Nominations open 3 June 2019 and close 5 July 2019, 5:00pm EST.

 

The RAA Board consists of 7 members, with fixed, but staggered, terms; which means only a few have to stand down at each election, but are eligible for re-election for a 3 year term.

Nomination information is in the Members Portal on the RAAus website. Being a member is the only qualification. Candidates are required to submit a photo and an election statement up to 750 words, to be published in the magazine.

 

At the "travelling around and meeting the members" gig that I attended this year, they were talking about wanting the Board to be more representative of the membership. They felt it lacked younger people, women, pilots with experience in weight-shift, gyro, 95-10, rag & tube, builders. But if you have the time and energy - NOMINATE!

 

 

I am listing this on behalf of Warren Butler's widow. Iiona wishes to sell Hangar No.9 situated at the Childers Qld airstrip. The hangar is one of the newer hangars. It is the closest to the airstrip, opens facing the strip (no worries with taxi or turning, can't be built out). It is zincalume, lockable, concrete slab and apron, large rainwater tank, pump, lights, power connected. It used to house a Sav, then Warren's Lightwing (sold). It is Council approved.

 

The hangar is on the Isis Flying Club Inc's lease. Owners must first become a member of the Club ($70/pa). The annual hangar owner's fee is $200/pa. There is a one-off fee of $500 to be paid by the buyer to the Club on the transfer of a hangar. The new owner must also agree to abide by the Club/Council lease conditions (no Commercial business, for aviation storage only, no residing etc) and the Club rules. The Club is a friendly group that meet on the first Saturday of every month (except January) at 10am in the Club house at the airfield. Club members are expected to put some sweat equity into the airfield - it is mowed and maintained by Club members. Childers is a grass strip about 3.5hrs drive from Brisbane.

I think the option of using both will work best. I am prepared to keep my Club up to date, however many may not. In that case a link to their existing Web or Facebook page may suffice. Our Club gave up on our website as it was too hard to keep it up to date.

Bob Bramley is now in Bendigo, heading to Tyabb Vic, expecting to be home in Davenport Tassie 11am Wednesday. Seems to have not hit a snag anywhere. After Tyabb, he has 5 stops around Tasmania.

The error message still persists ... it looks exactly like BirdDog's in #67. I un-ticked one, then two of the first email options in Preferences and get the same message regardless when I hit Save. Win 10, Firefox latest, MS Surface Pro 3.

Bob Bramley is over half way - left Tassie, Vic, NSW, Qld, NT behind - now heading for Port Headland WA. Not sure what is going on (weather?) as after Darwin he has been flying in the afternoon rather than early morning in the Eastern States. Has been making good time. Had a day off in Darwin, but foot to the floor for the rest of it.

 

Unfortunately he won't be breaking the record as someone got in before him in Sept 2018. Not entirely sure what the issue was, but has something to do with supported and unsupported. He was claiming the youngest unsupported - so perhaps this is immaterial and it is simply the youngest (regardless). Had he left in January he would have claimed the record. But, as I have said before, Good on him for making that decision in the face of adverse weather (and insufficient funding) and not been caught up in Push-on-Itis.

He departed this morning, landed at Flinders Is, now about to land at Lakes Entrance Vic.

 

 

If you aim to be the youngest, you have to aim for the closest date to your birthday, or you risk leaving a window of opportunity for someone marginally younger to take your record.  If you are at school, you aim for school holidays.  The compulsion to go ASAP could over-ride good decision making; so I applaud his decision to delay.   Good on him for having a go.

 

 

I have had no problems with Avdata.  Someone was using my call sign, regularly commuting into Archerfield Mon-Fri, I simply replied that my aircraft had not left Longreach and the charges were reversed.  A Commercial pilot "borrowed" my fuel card and used my call sign - I was charged for landing fees and en-route charges - the refueller noted the VH on the plane as it was different to the card, so I sent that as proof and that my C150 didn't do that amount of knots for Airservices - both reversed without any further ado.  An acquaintance regularly flew into a busy airfield for fuel using someone else's call sign.  Avdata reversed the charges and the airport staff identified the plane and then him, and banned him from visiting without prior permission.  Over the years I have had people use my call sign at Longreach as they knew I had paid the annual fee.  I don't know what transpired there, but I suspect they got rounded up in the end and their bums polished.

 

I have had an aircraft on the VH register for over 20 years.  The list is publicly available; you can download it, with my full name, addresses, etc.  20 years ago I used to get mail advertising things, but I hardly get anything generated by that list now.  I guess Facebook etc give away far more detail on far more people.

 

 

There's no landing fees at the Childers Qld airstrip, but it costs Council $5,000 per year to maintain and only a few hangar owners are local residents contributing rates to that Regional Council.  It used to cost $15,000 per year and Council were talking about demolishing the old toilet block (it cost about $5,000 to clean) so the Club took over the cleaning and provisioning, the mowing, spraying and maintaining of Council land.  In return the Council only charges $55/pa for the lease the hangars sit on.  But it still costs them $5,000 for wind socks, cones; major grading, drainage, access road, toilet painting, pump & cistern replacements, crusher dust, earthworks, survey etc.

 

The Club puts in many hours of volunteer labour and about $1,700 in insurance, $2,500 in fuel, mower repairs & depreciation, toilet supplies, tea, coffee & milk etc so that other aviators can enjoy the strip and amenities for free.  Visitors are welcome to give the Club a donation.  Membership was increased to $70 to cover increasing costs in this area, but few begrudged the need to do so.  I believe this model could be proposed to Council's struggling to justify the costs of maintaining small airstrips.

The plane was privately owned, but the Canberra Aeronautical Club has since confirmed one of its members was flying.

 

It is believed downwinds pushed the aircraft into the tree line shortly after take-off, causing it to clip the trees and crash.

 

A spokesman from NSW Police, which is investigating the incident, said the man was the only person in the plane at the time of the incident.

An Adelaide pilot has taken workplace venting to new heights by etching "I'm bored" into the sky.

 

 

The Diamond Star plane, operated by Flight Training Adelaide, spent a little over three hours in the air on Tuesday to draw the letters over South Australia.  The message was not seen by people on the ground, but was visible to aviation followers watching live flight tracking programs and websites.   It is believed the pilot, who was working out of Parafield Airport, north of Adelaide, was "running in" a new engine.

 

The "bored" artist is not the only pilot creating messages or artwork, according to the Flightradar24 website.

 

Throughout the world pilots are drawing planes, love hearts, leaving messages and even signing their own work on return flights.

 

 

He can't be voted out by the other Directors.  The Constitution says:

 

38.4  The Directors cannot remove a Director or auditor.  Directors and auditors may only be removed by a Members’ resolution at a general meeting.

 

Tony has resigned.  There are only two scenarios (a) he has resigned voluntarily, or (f) he has resigned by informing the Board he is no longer eligible under the Act.  People resign for a number of reasons; pressures of work, family commitments, health.  Whatever, lets hear it from a reliable source.  He's been an active Board member for a number of years, so I doubt it is the Board as he's weathered stormier seas than this present one.  Someone who knows him may be able to shed some light.

 

 

The RAA Constitution says

 

34.6 The Directors may appoint a person as a Director to fill a casual vacancy if that person is eligible under Clause 36.

 

It does not outline how this person is chosen, except by the Directors.  As a recent election had been held the results show who was the next most popular with the members.  They could have just picked a mate - then we would have something to complain about ....

 

As for Tony King's resignation, best to wait for reliable news.  He can't be voted out by the Directors, only by the members, under the Constitution.  Reading the Board Audit, he does not appear to be the problem.

 

The Constitution again:

 

37 A Director immediately and irrevocably stops being a Director if they:

 

(a) give written notice of resignation as a Director to the Company with the resignation becoming effective as of the date specified in the notice,

 

(b) die,

 

© are removed as a Director by a resolution of the Members,

 

(d) stop being a Member of the Company,

 

(e) are absent for three (3) consecutive Directors’ meetings without approval from the Directors, or

 

(f) become ineligible to be a Director of the Company under the Corporations Act.

Yesterday I helped move the Maryborough Military Aviation Museum to a shopfront in Maryborough CBD.  It will be open, initially, on Thursday mornings at 108 Bazaar Street Maryborough Qld (between the Cane Growers Assoc and Hotel Carlton).  The aircraft being restored are still in a hangar at the airport, but this at least will make the rest of the collection available to the public until the dedicated museum building is erected at the airport.

You will have to ask Ian - been a while since we bought ours, but, if I remember correctly, they were unbranded, came in a plastic zip-lock bag.  They are still going OK, the original DCs they replaced got wrecked by whiskery blokes, they oozed from small holes and tears.  As my plane isn't used for training anymore, I am the only user, which might explain why they are still good.  I think they are marginally better.  The DCs were a thicker plastic and all gel, these are softer and might have a little foam inside with the gel.  They are not as sweaty.  Just looked it up - bought Dec 2014. for $29.95 per pair.

 

 

Any recommendations on suppliers for DC ear pads? Prolly gel ones? We looked on eBay to get a feel for what’s out there and prices vary a lot of course. We don’t need a whole kit, just the ear pieces. Is 30ish bucks about the going rate?

Checklists do serve a purpose - I worked in construction - a couple of our lads self assessed (ticked & ignored) the Hot Works Permit.  Angle grinding on a hot windy day without clearing the dry grass from where they were working or having water on hand.  Up she went!  Grass fire raging towards the car park and private land while they raced around trying to find something to fight it with.  Wall of flame between them and car ... total write-off.  If they had heeded the requirements it may not have happened.  As it was he had to bear the loss of his vehicle and the wrath of his boss, and the local farmer lost a few hectares and a day mopping up. 

 

No checklist and he could have pleaded that No-One Told Me ... and the company might have been compensating a whole car park full of vehicles and an irate grazier.

 

 

Mining includes all the little Mum & Dad mines (think opals, gemstones) and in some States Quarries too.  The big coal mines have a fatality rate you can count on one hand.

 

That graph shows the proportion of fatalities (not the proportion in reference to the size of the industry).  Eg if there were 100 deaths in 2016 then 26 were Transport etc and 3 were Public Admin.  In reference to the industry (a % of all people so employed) would show that agriculture tops the list as the most dangerous.

 

 

There's an airpark, but the subdivision has no services - they are relying on buyers to provide their own off-grid solar etc.  None sold as far as I know.  The Maryborough Millitary Aviation Museum hopes to have a museum building up and running in 2020 and is presently restoring things and displaying in another hangar.  The local prison has flights transferring prisoners & staff.  No RPT, but there's a RAA flying school,  Aero Club with C172 and some gliding enthusiasts getting that Club & School going again.  Fuel on site or short walk to Servo.  Large grounds with off-street parking, sharing with other useful facilities and organisations, with public amenities for 'festivals' like the Wings & Wheels a few months ago.   Right the beside the town.   I don't think it is under any threat because it is making itself too useful.
