It would be good to have 5 mins to edit a post for some small typo without the Edited by ... tag in bold appear for no good reason.

NRMA recently took over SGIO in WA after moving across here a couple of years ago. Buying out the competition.

Not when it started, both those cases involved someone with the benefit of hindsight designing an alternative which would not have resulted in deaths. The penalties the Judges awarded were publicised around the world. Ralph Nader had started the movement against the industry attacking the Corvair design, but the industry quickly hit back and the legislation was made more reasonable.
Designing an alternative that clearly doesn't work can hardly be claimed to be a safer design. Didn't the manufacturer dispute the claim?

The plaintiff claimed that if the fuel tank had been between the chassis rails instead of outside them, the fatality would not have occurred. From memory the Judge awarded the plaintiff $10 million with a punitive fine on Freightliner of $10 million. The fact that the space between the chassis rails is required by the prop shaft was not raised.
In a second case a gas tanker rolled over, cracked and exploded. The lawyers for the plaintiffs came up with a tank design which had a smaller diameter over the fifth wheel allowing the main barrel to be lower ahead of the rear axles, and successfully argued that the lower net centre of gravity would have prevented the crash. No one pointed out that the smaller volume would have made the semi trailer non-viable, and also created a potential cracking point. Again, the awards were multi-million dollar compensation and pay out.
How to they get away with that? Surely the manufacturer had an opportunity to point out these proposed `safer' design solutions that they should have implemented were not viable?

That's similar to the one I have. I found the serrations in the clamp tended to score the soft aluminium tubing which I wasn't very happy about, but a single wrap of masking tape around the tube helped a lot.
Making good flares is definitely an art. The number of pieces of tubing I threw away could almost have built another plane.

Do you think this Ebay offering would do the fairing OK (claims to be 37 degrees)?
$130 + $20 delivery https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/292610727741?hash=item4420f55f3d:g:DS0AAOxycD9TWPGM
Looks like a pretty decent set for the price. If it's 37 deg, should be fine. You can easily pay $250-$300 or more for a top brand.
Edit: Be careful. I zoomed in on the dies in the link and they have 45 deg stamped on them.

When were starter motors introduced? That would be a hard prop to swing.

Make sure you get a 37 deg flaring tool with AN fittings, not the standard automotive one.

I really enjoyed building and ended up with a new plane. Best of both worlds.

You must be from Perth , USA 🤣.
I have no rational explanation for our totally screwed up combination of aviation metric/imperial measurements BUT we at least all our weights are metric.
Rough calculation; An ATEC Faeta (MTO 600kg at the moment) can lift - 100L of fuel (79kg) 2 crew (80 x 2 = 160kg) your 75lb ( 34kg) and still have about 27 kg in reserve. Using max continues power setting will travel at 134 knots, for a still air range of 705 Nm (1306 km) to empty tanks.
Ah yes, but it’s not an RV 🙂

What load can you take with full fuel and 2 POB? The Tecnam was limited to about 20kg, which is fine for overnighters, but a bit of a problem for a week-long trip.
My 12 can take 50lb in the baggage compartment. The current 12’s can take 75 lb as the fuel tank has been relocated. My long trips have been solo so the passenger seat has been available for whatever I wanted to take.

A Sling 2 is good for 700 kg and would be a nice choice for either weight limit. I've never yet been loaded even to 600kg in the RV-12 on any trip.

Just watched the video of the ditching. Great example of how to do it well. Calm ocean and bystanders nearby also helped.

The price of a new 916is is $US49,500.00,
That should keep Lycoming in business for a while longer. Vans will sell you a 160hp Lycoming for US$35-$38k.

No its not...he tested it to how he wanted to...NOT to how the props are designed to be run
His testing was done as if you have a IFA or constant speed. These props are ground ajustable and designed to run a max rpm on a gearbox driven engine
If you set them up as per factory instructions you will get a substantial improvement in performance...more than 50 customers I have sent props to with maybe 15 or more different style of aircraft cant all be idiots..they know what performs better than what they had. I have not had one customer that did not get substantial performance increase
Are you a distributor for e-Props?

What is the maximum performance achieved in operation?

Yes, but lots of light planes have done similar trips going back to the biplane days without any anti or de-icing equipment.
It's just another risk that has to be managed as best you can if you are game enough to tackle something like that.

Those Slings are very capable aircraft. They've done quite a number of similar long distance flights now.

Paint or powder coating under washers can result in torqued bolts losing tension over time which you can't check easily if Loctite has been used on the nuts or bolt threads. For example on engine mounting bolts.

No visible hatch to enable the chute to be deployed, and those external shroud attachment points would not work with a chute stowed inside the plane. Looks like an April Fools joke to me.
