(Yes, plenty of them around here.)
  2. Passengers flying on some Air New Zealand planes will be able to send text messages and emails mid-flight, by the end of the year. But the airline must convince the Civil Aviation Authority that it's safe before an exemption is granted to a rule that prohibits the use of portable electronic devices on flights, The New Zealand Herald reported. The national carrier plans to allow people to send and receive text messages and emails on their iPhones, Blackberries and GSM mobiles on their new 777-300 aircrafts by November. The new service would also allow passengers to go online using their mobile broadband connection, but the airline doesn't plan to allow voice calls on board. Passengers will be requested to keep their phones on silent mode, Air New Zealand Group general manager Ed Sims said. Customers will be billed by their own mobile service, like any other global roaming plan, but in-flight costs will apply. A press release from Air New Zealand said the service is "subject to regulatory approval". A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority told reporters the exemption would be similar to the one which allows the use of phones on "flight mode" after take-off and before landing. The airline and the authority are in discussions and would come to an agreement before the service is launched at the end of the year, the Herald said.
  3. Hi Steph, I use a joystick that you twist for rudder, only paid $40. I know they are not pedals, but you can do coordinated turns, side slipping and taxi. The twisting action trains the brain so not important if using feet or hands, much like flying different a/c ie LH or RH seat, center stick, left hand throttle/right hand stick etc. Once you learn what the primary and secondary functions of the controls do, it does matter which configuration the a/c is, your brain will adapt to suit. Hope this my help, Steve
  4. Hi Darky, I got a HTC Desire two weeks ago, very happy with it. It is the first smart type phone I have had, took me a while to learn to use it. Just remember that the battery will only last a couple of days, I used to get a week out of the old Samsung. There are a few apps available now, but expect there will be heaps in the future. I was going to get the Iphone but the bloke steered me towards the Desire, he just got his after having the Iphone since they were released, he said the Desire was ten times better. I suppose it's like asking " What tooth brushes do dentists use ?" BTW, he wants to start flying so told him about this website, another member maybe. Steve
  5. Hi Lexman, I would go to the oaks, I have spoken to john at Daves Flying School, I will do my RA conversion soon. Bankstown too busy, along way from training area, alot of time on ground too. Camden is good, exposure to tower on weekends, can be busy with bankstown a/c doing circuits then heading back. No fees at the oaks. I think Dave lives locally too, at Llandilo. Hope this helps, contact me if you need anymore help, only happy to help, cheers Steve
  6. Hi Lexman, Welcome aboard. I am looking at building a Sierra myself. I had the chance to look over slarti's cheetah at the Mudgee airshow a few weeks ago, very nice. I am going up to Forster for the long weekend, so will be dropping in at factory at Taree to have a stickybeak too. I'm just down the road in Cranebrook by the way, Steve
  7. G'day Bart, Welcome aboard, I'm only new here myself. Is your Jab at YKAT, haven't been out there for ages. I work in Lawson, now live in Cranebrook, but grew up in the mountains. I have come from GA, about to convert to RA shortly. I haven't flown for about 12 years, doesn't seem that long ago though. Once again, welcome. Steve
  8. Thanks for the welcome. So Decca, you used to drive B727's I can assume. My dad was a F/E on B727-100 for a few years before flying B747's. I grew up as a RAAF Brat when dad flew P3-C's, so have been involved in aviation since I was born. Planedriver, I have been out to The Oaks a couple of times over the years. I'll have to get out there again and convert my licence over to RA, can you recommend a school over there. Dazza, I hope this was my only break too, yes life is too short, something I only realised late last year. Happy landings, Steve
  9. :rotary:G'day all, Got the flying bug back, started flying GA in 1987, finished up in 2000. Have flown Tabagos/Trinidads and Warriors, plus a few hours in Citabrias. Looking at building a kit, maybe Himax. Cant believe how expensive GA has become, rec flying might be the answer. Happy landings, Steve
