  1. Hi Friarpuk,

     

    I really appreciate your blog, the photos have helped me greatly. I've pretty much decided to use an EFIS/EMS (probably MGL Enigma or Extreme) in combination with some steam guages for backup (and I guess I'm a traditionalist at heart!), as well as a GPS (wavering between AvMap GeoPilot II PLUS and one of the myriad touch screen units), radio, compass and transponder. I'll try to post a couple of photos, although the last one isn't up to date: I've since fitted the tail surfaces and control cables, currently working on the fuel system. One question, did you have to remove the floor to fit the fuselage covering, or just the supporting tubes underneath the outside of the floor?

  2. Thanks to everyone, will upload some pics as I go.. does anyone have any thoughts regarding the use of the supplied plastic-based locking nuts being used in the engine compartment? I have heard talk of using all metal ones, yet the kit was passed in the UK as supplied (very stringent rules I gather...). Any thoughts?

    I am expecting the Skyranger Swift kit to arrive any week now (the first in Tasmania), I'll post some progress photos and maybe start some kind of a blog if I can figure out how to (???). Engine will be 100hp Rotax, still debating whether glass panel or steam gauges...

    I'm considering buying a Rotax 912 ULS - powered CH701, is there anyone who can give me first-hand experience of what cruise speed is attainable? I know it's a draggy plane, but I'd like to acieve a reasonably economical 80 kts.

  5. Hey!Yep in the 20nm ring it's a restricted area when they are active, unless under 1500ft which is only a Danger area. In the 30nm ring R620D doesn't apply till 4500. These area's aren't always active, but most week days they are, worth checking the NOTAMS or call up Bris Center to check.

     

    You get spoilt when you fly through there often with a clearance, and forget about all those that can't! ah_oh.gif.cb6948bbe4a506008010cb63d6bb3c47.gif

  6. Hi All...

     

    I had a broken through bolt (top, No. 1) on my reco 2200 engine about a year ago (at about 100 hours), and assisted a local L2 to replace all the through bolts. He had quite a few tools that he had adapted specially. Jabiru supplied new through bolts and nuts gratis (the least they could have done, considering the fact that they didn't replace them when they reconditioned the engine!). The job was complicated by the fact that the new O-rings supplied for the push rod tubes were too thick (to suit newer engine), and the ends of the tubes had to be chamfered to make them fit. Total cost to me was $900, and now I'll have to get it all redone at some stage in the not-too-distant-future... very disheartening! BTW, Don at Jabiru told me at the time (quote) "these through bolts are over-engineered, and won't ever be altered"..... Hmmmm.

    Were you questioned at all at Bathurst Harbour by the charter operators? I was under the impression that they frown on RAA aircraft flying in, and require prior permission, etc.... it's been on my to do list for some time, but that has always held me back.

    On making an (unsuccessful) enquiry of RAAus Tecnical Manager Steve Bell about the possibility of changing my 55-registered LSA Jab to 19 rego to allow for possible change to a Rotax 912 (among other mods), I was informed that sometime "in the not too distant future", a manufacturer (not identified) will have a CASA-approved firewall-forward kit on the market for factory built Jabs. The approval process is well underway, apparently. That's all I know. Has anyone else heard anything?

  9. A quick bump...

     

    I just remembered an incident with an LSA 55 some years ago, in north Tas here, where one of the flap ROD ENDS broke off where the thread finished, while on short final. This was due to the ball part having seized up... the nett effect was that the plane suddenly rolled violently, and only the quick reaction of the pilot in countering the roll with aileron, taking off flap and adding power (all at once!) avoided a nasty crash.

     

    ALWAYS check the rod ends for free movement...as we all know...

  10. I guess that, in that unlikely event, I would use rudder for banking and throttle for pitch control. Only half flap for landing.

     

    The chances of losing both aeleron and elevator control are far, far less than the chances of the engine stopping/losing power by all accounts! If really concerned, adjust the right flap down slightly.

  11. I had yellow ones in my LSA but kept breaking the nosewheel spat. Changed to red and much stiffer, no problems.

     

    As for wear, the kellow one, as far as I'm aware, had done 1400-odd hours and was undamaged.

  12. I have an LSA and I think this movement is a natural function of the fact that the L) side flap is adjacent to the fixing point (lever/location holes), whereas the R) side flap is way out the end of a torque tube that is subject to torsional movement.

     

    For it to be the same on both sides, it would have to be firmly attached on both sides. As for the small difference in airflow over each flap, you would be compensating for it with aileron/rudder without even realising it.

     

    Just my humble opinion......
