  1. Howdy all...

On the Brisbane VTC Down the Bottom Left is a small airport called amberly... some of you might have visited it .. some may not have... Quetion for you all, I am pretty sure i know the answer, and there is no such thing as a stupid question, There is a second pie shaped ring at 20nm (and one out further at 30nm) from Amberley (20nm AMP ARP) Is this controlled airspace when the ctr is active? My money says yes, but for us unitiated types, the red lines mean military on the vtc, but the red line with the small hairs on it (hey, I'm descriptive) dont seem to be in the legend..

Just want to make sure, to me it means that Coominya/Forest Hill etc inside the 20nm and that inside the 30nm chunk means that they are off limits, plus all the restricted areas etc....

Just curious, The one time I've been down there I checked on NAIPS before heading to make sure all the R62X's areas where de-activated, and checked the ersa...

    thank you ladies and gents...

  2. on the Topic of Extras for RA Aus Pilots-- I've heard around the campfire that perhaps there is going to be a Controlled Airspace endorsement coming this year? Or is this just the older pilots pulling the legs of the younger pilots.. (I only ask as I want to fly over my house, which is all Class C in brisbane... one day in the future... or just wait until I get my ppl!)

  3. Howdy All,

Just wondering I am planning a trip from Caboolture to Yeppoon in the coming months, I'm aware of the airspaces on the way up, just wondering if anyone has done a trip in recent moons, and would like to have a chat.. any first hand knowledge would be appreciated.. trip planned for april, will hopefully be over easter, landing at mayborough, bundaberg (for a top up of fuel)... I'm planning on landing at Emu Park or Hedlow Airfield for Landfall and to park overnight stay a day, then perhaps a run around the area the next day then back to brisbane on the third day...

All help is welcomed, I will be invading other peoples airspace, so watch out :)

  4. Just wanted to drop a quick thank you to all those who helped out over the last 6 months, with my questions and queries... I passed my check ride today, and the paperworks all filled out, and that little message in my log book stating that I'm compitant... comatant ... Can manipulate the controls properly...

And a big thanks to my instructors, who's infinate patience helped pave the way...

  5. Hello All!

Just a quick question for those in the know, I am curious about 912's and Carb Icing, the Tecnam that I fly, doesnt have Carb Heat, the carburettor's are mounted above the engine, near the firewall, I am guessing that the ambient heat will keep this problem at bay, but am always interested in hearing any thoughts..

I am also curious if anyone has encounted any carb icing 'adventures', and if they would like to share them...

  6. Your right, was up yesterday and the hot weather makes a real difference, everyone was having troubles getting down, unexpected sink, unexpected lift, and sometimes its there, and sometimes it not... did 7 circuits on 06 at YCAB yesterday, every single one of them was different, thermals in some spots not others, sink where there was no sink.. interesting yet fun :)

  7. Second Solo yesterday, new Runway, Never used 06 before at YCAB.. so that was interesting, so after a 'I'm lost' circuit (lined up on 12, but after a second, I knew that wasnt right, so I deffered to the experience sitting beside me!) they where getting better, same old same old, coming in a little low on the flare, and thumping it in, just have to get the judging down a little more. Besides a scare on one of my solo circuits all good! Another happy camper!

  8. Thats the key to it I think, keeping it calm and expecting things to happen, and then reacting appropriatly, Went up for my second solo yesterday, on a new runway (Funny in 4 months I've never used Runway 06!) So after a bad circuit (Trying to downwind on Runway 12!) and a bit of help from my instructor, we got it sorted out, and the next few where getting better, the last few solo circuits where okay, but I got disturbed on the second last downwind, for some reason, and I'm thinking it through, My controls where level and balanced, but the left wing popped up about 30 degree's and I REALLY had to fight it down, that lasted about 2-3 seconds, then it all went back to normal.. On the last cct before full stop, I really looked at the ground that I was going over and I couldnt see any real reason for it, where it happened there was just grass'd fields.. Very odd... So yes, go un-nerved on that one, and Fuddled around getting it slowed down, and came in a little low.. well, lots low, had to fix that up..

Haveing an absolute Blast! Radio calls where getting a little to verbose towards the end, but was getting exhausted, still had enough time for another cct, but I called it full stop and truddled back to the hanger... My instructor picked up on my flat approaches, the only thing I could put it down to was the headwind, as I was really working on the airspeed problem that I've been having...

Day 5 and Still have the silly grin :)

  9. Another couple of hours in the air on the weekend... On A different topic for anyone still covering the thread, For other CFI's/FI's, If an aircraft is in late from a private hire, and there is a student waiting, do you push them back to try and accomidate other students in the day? I'm not griping, sometimes I wait around for an hour on the second flight because the day just gets pushed out more and more sequentially.. Would appreciate any other experiences...

  10. It will be interesting to see what happens with the new CASA Recreational license and the RA Controlled Airspace Endorsement... its in the book, but you cant get it as yet.... I thankfully live up here in queensland where here in brisbane I am spoiled with choices, I have 4 aerodromes within 2 hours drive, and two within 45 minutes...

The question I would like to ask is, that if we do get endorsed to fly into Delta airspace, would people want to land at there commercial hubs and have a fun day out on the tarmac, or would we be more likely just to use it as a shortcut for getting between A and B a little quicker ...

  11. hey red....some of us instructors aren't trying to trick you....we do need to know u are 'seriously' checking things however!...........

The checks worked, on the second flight yesterday I was doing the usualy bumpfishwt and found the cabin door was missing the top hatch to be secured..

  12. Comes down to the patience of the instructors really.. When I get my pilot certificate I'm going to get two little paddles/sticks made up and painted for them..

One that says Right Rudder, the other one that stated Are you going to pull the flap?

    :)

  13. Howdy again, I think another solid weekend, except for one 'brain snap' (Lovely illustration of an error chain in action, Some turbulence, then a thermal, then missing the base call, then coming in a little high, a little flat, and then landing on three wheels, and not paying much more attention.. We both looked at eachother and didnt have a lot to say about that one..) But the rest where I believe passable student landings, no slamming it down.. just have to limit my movements on the controls alittle more when closer to the ground, a couple of two for ones, but good positive feelings all the way around..

Reverted to looking at the ASI Again, bugger of a thing, it feels so right to look at it, just have to get through this, we covered it up for the last 5 circuits, without a lot of prompting, except for the one where I went to sleep, it amasing what you can achieve with a bit of concentration outside and not looking at the guages.. Couple of problems keeping captured height, especially when on downwind, still coming in a little high, but thats more a judgement call when to turn for base, If I extended just a little more out on downwind, and pulled the flaps in a little earlier (towards the second lessons middle this was under control) would have looked a lot more nicer.

Went onto Engine Failures in Circuit, and got a demo of an engine failure on takeoff, enjoyed them, its truly amasing what looks good from one angle is rather nasty from another angle, just have to remember not to make rash or snap decisions, but to make a decision and weigh the options...

So yes, all and all a good experience, a Chipmunk had a read Engine failure on Takeoff as I arrived, so that was interesting.. an omen? :)

  14. I thought I would pose a question to everyone out there not just us students, 'What is in your flight bag?' what do you take with you for just a day in circuits, a day out within 50nm, and a day over the horizon (or several!)

    I'll start the ball rolling

  15. Howdy BallPoint and Mazda :) I am going to be there bright and early on sunday at YCAB (Around 8am), have to get the tax done on saturday, so I can get some more spending money to go around in rectangles ;)

Its all about a positive attitude, and keeping at it, I know I'm going to get it wrong some of the time, I just have to work at it, and really think about what I am doing, I find when I'm in robot mode, I tend to not pay any attention to whats going on, and just fly without thinking, last week was the first week in a while I improvised and tryed what I've been told over and over and actually got the aircraft on the ground.

More reading and more practice !! And if anyone feels the need to donate $140,000 for my very own brand new CTLS, I wouldnt say no...!

Thanks everyone for your kind words, another 2 hours on sunday this week and away we go!
