  1. Scott put me back onto this thread ... I am so so happy to see her flying... I am happy for you both ;) Mark
  2. Good to see the girls going to get there !
  3. Howdy All, I am slowly building my new nynya, and it dawned on me early in the piece that I know very little about engine maintenance, I've been housing Bert Flood, but they dont seem to be very interested (nearly two years now) about doing a course for maintenance on engines, repairs, programmed maintenance inspections etc etc. Has anyone heard of anything in Australia? I dont mind the travel, but I dont want to fly to the US for a couple of weeks to do the training, that for some reason seems to be hiding somewhere in Australia ReD

My Wife and I are driving down, we are leaving wednesday night, and stopping in toowoomba, then starting on Thursday Morning and Hopefully will be at Dubbo on Thursday Night (This is the last event I'll be able to get to in a while, Bub is due in december, so I wont be able to get away from home much for a the next little while, so the kit will be advancing well :)! I Hope..) If anyone from brisbane wants some camping gear brought down We will have a little room left in the Mazda 3..
  6. Congratulations on your Swift!
  7. Howdy all :) Yes.. I'm enjoying building it.. Even started on the RA-Aus Paperwork (19-2804 Registered!) Been hard'ish at it for the last month and a half, mostly working on the weekends due to full time work committments (but normally get 1-2 hours a night, even if its just sitting and figuring out things) I've started a Kitlog which is available at www.mykitlog.com/marknynja and my personal website is www.markjamesallen.com (its running off a adsl connection so the link may be a little slow.. will eventually move it to a hosted web service.. one day..) Build Day 001-021 are up there now.. will work on 022 and 023.. Finished fitting the fuel tank this afternoon with some gentle encouragement from Scott, and spent the last hour replacing the temp blue nuts (yes.. there blue.. and no.. there not that.. gawd get your minds out of the gutter) with the final locknuts and locktight.. Going flying tomorrow so sadly, thats all for this weekend.. but all work and no flying makes me duller than usual :)
  8. Howdy all, Could anyone point me to the local suppliers of GRS/BRS Chutes? red...
  9. Howdy All, I am wondering if anyone has ever contemplated about going to PNG Flying from Cape York to PNG or knows of anyone that has ever done it, There is a 100klm stretch between the last of the island in the straights between PNG and the Small islands heading north, Would love to add it to a list of things to do (When I retire or get time off in spades, will think of doing an around australia, and while up there, why not go and see some of the sothern cities and areas) My first question is, would our certificates be noted up there? or would you need a PPL? Where would anyone get details on there airspace? Just a thought.. ReD
  10. My wife and I where thinking about it, but decieded to go see my relatives in Yeppoon instead, was a lovely 2.5 hour trip up and 3.0 hour trip back. I am saving my pennies for the next few months as there are going to be a lot of fly ins in Queenslandland, and would like to go along to a couple of them, and just couldnt see the point of heading down, as I would have had to have left on the Wed/Thur to get there for the Friday Opening, but there is always next year. I've heard monto is going ahead this year, so I may pop up for that one!
  11. Hello All, Just wondering if anyone is heading over to inglewood this year 5-6-7 May 2012.
  12. I've gotten into the habit of just doing a 'Radio Check' Call, its so hard for most people to resist telling you that your radios working, and you get an idea of whos out there, if you've just turned on (plus isnt it a rule?)
  13. Just to Hijack the thread, I was down at the local crosswind landing practice aerodrome a few weekends ago, practicing my attempts at crosswind landings, all going good, the last one I managed to get lift, then sink, then shear, so I put some power in an landed a bit long, so rather than trying a touch and go I thought I would taxi off, and head down the taxi way, gave an all clear call, and this particular aerodrome has one runway, a little peeved about the un-spectacular landing, I taxied off, as I was heading past the bowsers I noticed a twin (some big cesna thing, I suspect a 310?) spooling up and he pulled in behind me, I suspect from the get go, that I was upsetting this particular pilot. Now its no excuse, you should get into the pattern as soon a s practical and safe, and not hold people up, but all of a sudden the sky was full of 172's landing (when I was doing ccts, it was just me myself and one other fellow) then there was me myself, three in pattern, the 310, and one other person behind him. So I thought rather than holding everyone up, There was one chap on late downwind, one fellow had just landed, and one just called crosswind and someone else inbound, so the fellow that had landed had just about got to the end of the runway for the second taxiway, and I called entering and lining up, I motored in, kept and eye on the traffic, and turned around into wind ready to go, The guy on downwind, called turning base, and I knew that the 172 was going to be on me in about 3 minutes, I saw the fellow turn off and gave a rolling call, Then the 310 chimes up 'Jeezus Mate, he hasnt even cleared' then there was silence... he hung up, and the 172 in front of me called cleared all runways, and I was on my roll.. I felt bad, as I rushed things, I departed and went home, I was just wondering everyone elses take on this... I've got another interesting question about QLINK flights, recently I flew up to see my relatives up north, a lovely trip, but was a little sore, but hey, brain wasnt compressed to much!, I was about 2nm south of gladstone aerodrome, I called inbound at 10nm, and I thought just because I heard someone key 3 times (and the automated voice message popped up on ctaf about lights turning on) that I suspected there was someone inbound, much faster and heavier than I, so I gave another report stating I was about 3nm to the S/SE of the aerodrome at 2500ft, A friendlish QLINK Pilot keyed up asking me where I was, what I was doing, what the color of my aircraft was, where I was heading, who I was with, what last weeks and this weeks lotto numbers where and my altitute.. ah ha! 'Me' being a smart cookie was flying a hemispherical and according to everything I read was going to be well and truly above anything that they where going to be doing below me.. at 2500ft... he then keyed up, asked me the same lot of questions again, and I filled them out as best I could, but he got a little turse saying that we would be in conflict at 2500ft, and they would have to slow down, not wanting to upset anyone else I kept on moving on quickly, I said, after all this chatting, that I was abeam the aerodrome, heading N/NNW and asked how far they where out (They hadnt made an inbound or anything call), he chimed up stating that they where inbound at 8000ft 20nm away.. ok cool I said.. Motoring along at 120knts trying to get out of here, because he was really un-nerving me. I kept on giving position reports, and I actually turned more NW when I was 2-3nm the other side of town and saw them (and head them) joining crosswind at 2500ish feet... Is this normal ?Just seemed like a lot of altitude to loose to get down to sea level.. but what do I know about flying dash-8's... I suspect they where on a glide path that would have put them at 2000ish feet above the aerodrome and I was stufing things up.. Would love to hear peoples input on that... Again sorry to hijack the thread.. This isnt GA Bashing, or other pilot bashing.. just wondering if there is anything I could have done better...
  14. As normal I was thinking about upcomming events and flight I would like to take, and currently I am simply filling out a flight note, pegging it to the board at the flight school, notifing one or two people in charge where I am off two, and letting the hanger hand know that the note is there. Its not that dont trust or believe that if the worst was to happen, I wouldnt be thought of at the right time, but its just in case. Now.. Never actually asked the question, and its always the way, the day after your on site, it pops into your head, I was wondering if anyone had a simple way of putting in a simple flight plan OR a SAR time with the Powers that Be, and when getting to the destination, you give them a call and cancel it. My meager understanding of Flight Plans are you need to check in Every 30 minutes, update them where you are etc. Can anyone share any experiences, or what they do when they go on trips, just heading to yeppoon on friday, and just me being over cautious... I know its a question and more training for my instructors, but wont see them before the end of the week, and any helps always appreciated.. Thanks! red..
  15. I know in the US you can call someone for a local briefing, but the only service I am aware of that you can get a 'Voice' to talk to you in the Dect Talk from Air Services... PEMET is okay, I find it tends to cut things out from time to time, and it doesnt bother with the NOTAMS normally as well..
  16. Howdy, Check this out, https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/brief/docs/Using_METBRIEF.pdf or for people who dont like PDF. Instructions on Using METBRIEF METBRIEF (previously DECTALK) METBRIEF is an automated briefing service that allows a caller to receive a full MET briefing over the phone via a high quality synthetic voice. MET products are requested using the phone key-pad, and entering a four digit product code. Registration NAIPS registration is required. Contact Airservices Australia Helpdesk on 1800 801 960 or on-line at https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/brief/naipsreg.asp. A Telstra Phone-away card is required and can be obtained from Telstra or the Airservices Publications Centre on 1300 306 630. METBRIEF Codes METBRIEF codes are 4 digit codes derived from the 4 digit location codes used previously for AVFAX and DECTALK. METBRIEF codes are available in ERSA at GEN-PF Appendix A. Specific location codes are based on the ARFOR area for the location e.g. 4001 (Brisbane MET – location in Area 40). ARFORs are xx00 (where xx is the forecast area). In a Nutshell …… 1. Caller calls the 1800 805 150 briefing number and selects the DECTALK option. 2. Caller receives greeting “Welcome to Airservices Australia automated pilot met briefing” 3. Caller is requested to “Please enter the account number”. (Enter account number) 4. Caller is requested to “please enter the password then press hash” (enter the password and press hash). A pause while TINA validates the account number and password with NAIPS. 5. Caller is requested to “enter the code for location or group or press hash to terminate call” (enter one product code) 6. The selected product is read. 7. At the end of the product the caller is requested to “enter the code for location or group or press hash to terminate call”. 8. Continue to enter product codes at this prompt until all products have been read. 9. When all products have been read, select the hash key (#) or hang up. After briefing, press ‘#’, ‘0’ to return to the operator.
  17. I've got the asic in my kneeboard pouch, Just thought it would be easier rather than running the gauntlet wheneverI pull up... Thanks guys! Now if someone has a nice aircraft with only one owner, low hours and only used on sundays for sale for a very good price, that can fit myself and one other in it... let me know ;) oh that and spares and a hanger in brisbane.. see I'm not asking much :)
  18. Thanks, will print out a google map, I noticed tie downs on the google map off the taxi way (Green Box's) I am guessing there tie downs is that right?
  19. Another Day In Paradise....
  20. I fly three different aircraft now (They keep letting me take up new aircraft, gawd!) A Flight Design CTSW, A Texan Top Class 600 and an Tecnam P92Echo, now I'm 6ft7 115kgs, Mostly Legs and Stomach (not a pretty sight!). I just fitinto a P92, but I spend most of my time hunched over, its a pain, and I get Tecnam Back and Neck (The super Echo that is/was out at boonah, its a MUCH better fit!), but I enjoy flying the Echo, I spent 8 months flying it around YCAB, I undertook my NAV's in the CTSW, and its my first choice for going anywhere, you sit down in the chair and more into the aircraft. there is LOTS of room, Only problem is that it is lacking places to put charts, snacks and your water!, and the Texan 600 I find it just like flying a Echo for me, I am a little hunched over, I wouldnt like to get another body in there, Thats just the headroom, I find that the echo and CT are easier to get in and out of, and the Echo and Texan have the same amount of leg room for me, I find after about 1 Hour I've had enough and need to land, where the CT is just comfortable, have taken it From YCAB-YGYM-YHBA and the trip was very enjoyable. Where I fly out from may be getting something even bigger in coming months, so I am looking forward to that, Its all about the ride, I called a trip short a few months ago, because there simply wasnt enough room for me, the kneeboard and the PAX, I could have left the PAX at the breakfast fly in, but I wouldnt have heard the end of it from the sister in law.. My 2c's.. ReD
  21. Hello all, with the easter break coming up, and my new certificate asking to be let out, and hopefully the weather being mild and gentle, I am planning a trip to visit the relatives up north (Natfly next year, sadly couldnt get off work to get there before I would have to come back and the event would be over!) I was thinking about the usual things, and it dawned on me, even though the CTSW that I fly has ample fuel to get me to where I am going in one trip, It wouldnt be such a silly idea to stop off half way and put the fuel back to maximum (within W&B), according to the plan I should get to my destination with over 35L Left out of the 80 on Board, but I would feel better if they where topped up. So enough of the story, just would like to know the following really, Where are the following airports/strips, if anyone has been there recently, would one find the 100LL Avgas Bowser, ERSA and Google maps can only help you so much! Plus I dont want to be taxing backwards and fowards to find the fuel ;) 1. Bundaberg 2. Gladstone 3. Biloela Thanks all in advance, ReD nb. Any smart alec comments about you get fuel out of bowsers, out of tanks, out of drums, from the loverly lady or man (no judgement) in the refueller, or any other smarty pants answers will be .. laughed at ;)
  22. Just out of curiousity (and maybe someday soon I may join the ranks of people that own an aircraft) in rough figures what are you paying for your insurances, and what does it cover?
  23. Nothing Personal, I chased these guys around for Nearly 8 months, from the day after I got 10 hours after my belt, and still couldnt get a straight answer out of any of them about insurances... Left Dozens of messages, would love to hear if anyone else has been able to get a hold of him.. Perhaps its just my phone manner ;)
