  1. Hmmm, I'll have to give this some thought. I'm not persuaded yet mind. What would such a thing set me back?

Hi Pud, with all the bad luck you've had you must be due for some good luck. I got a new brolly prop so it does'nt fit mine so it's your's for the asking if you would like it. Don't take it just because it's free because someone else might like it but yours is first option.

  2. You lucky buggar!!!Dunno about a spinner Terry, my mates might reckon it's a bit wanky:csm:

What colour do you reckon, and have you got one? 074_stirrer.gif.5dad7b21c959cf11ea13e4267b2e9bc0.gif

Hi Pud, it won't look wanky it'll look cool. It should be chrome and yes I've got one.

  3. Hi Pud, had a great fly this afternoon in the middle of tassie in dead calm conditions for a couple of hours. unbelievable. Your've got a lot to look forward too.

just had another look at your photo at the start of this thread pud, she looks nice but would look better with a spinner do you think.

  4. Continuing with my learning process in trying to ascertain the cause of engine damage, I decided to dismantle the old Bing carbies off the damaged engine - these I was told had been rebuilt, "refurbished" was the term used; whatever that means.I checked the main jet, idler jet, needle jet and jet needle for each carbie. And found not one component identical in size specification, with the other carbie.

Is this ok? It would seem to me to cause all sorts of problems trying to balance the carbies.

    Pud

Hi Pud, sounds like someone has let you down, they need a kick in the behind, if you had been in the air I could be talking about you rather than to you.

The bing carbie is used on a lot of different motors all needing different jetting. At one time I fitted an intake silencer on my 582 which required changes. Did both your carbies come from the same motor, if not they may have been jetted differently. After my accident I removed the intake silencer because I was concerned about the smaller jet sizes and the possibility of blockage. [paranoid maybe]. The carbies are so simple you can check every detail yourself.

Buy the way have you got that motor on yet.

  5. Funny thing, I've actually crossed Bass Strait at 'NIGHT" in a C210! what was I thinking, back then being 22, one doesn't consider the 'what ifs' 031_loopy.gif.e6c12871a67563904dadc7a0d20945bf.gif If you ever want to chat about floats, yell out as I might have several suggestions ok.regards

Thanks FP, I'll will contact you when the time comes. The more info the better.

  6. Hi there Terry! That's a brave move in a Thruster so well done :-)

I've flown a drifter and I can't see how that would float, so I'm impressed others have crossed BS most definitely, where as myself, I'd need something with a glide ratio of 1000:1 or fly at a flight level or something that will float, yep I'm a chicken for sure :-)

Here's a great idea, hire a lift raft and strap to rear seat, "if needed" you simply inflate prior touchdown and bingo :-) all you'll need is a martini and a blonde

Hi Floatplane, I wasn't the pilot so can't take the credit. Having had an engine stop in flight on me I think I'd constantly be thinking about it. Having said that I would island hop the other way. I also have a 701 so think I'd feel okay with a four stroke. It is my plan to put floats on it one day.

  7. I understand that the wings of my Jab 450UL have a foam core. Does all that foam give it buoyancy should I have to ditch? From what I see in the hangar a Thruster or Xair would go straight to the bottom. I have seen references to floating Jabirus in the recent Australian floods, and I wondered if this was feature worthy of remark. 033_scratching_head.gif.b541836ec2811b6655a8e435f4c1b53a.gif

I was told by someone in the know that when they crossed the strait with a thruster they filled the wings with foam slabs 100mm thick. Could do it with an xair too I suppose. There has been many many thruster crossings. When my thruster was brought to tassie it was flown direct from yarrum to bridport at 9000 feet.

  8. The local port costs are a killer. My perception is that they are probably the highest in the world thanks to the lack of competition and privatisation. If you know hte weight and size of the kit you can try http://www.freightnet.com/

Fly_ tornado, all of the charges are government fees and charges so not related to either competition or privatisation, in effect customs are tax collectors for their masters and not a profit making organisation.

  9. Hi Glen, could you give me a link to the aviation exception section on the customs website please. I need to know whether it covers parts for planes, tools used in aviation etc. I'm getting some conflicting info. I brought a dyna vibe prop balancer from the usa which is sitting with customs now. I could just pay it but it's worth the excercise as it might be useful for others. Thanks in advance Terry

  10. We have finally fired up the Corvair engine. After a little tinkering around with the points we got it started. It ran very well and pulled like a baxxxrd. We can now get on with the final wing fitting and get the thing up to the airport for testing.I have put up a few minutes of the engine run.

    sounds cool well done.

  11. We are pleased to report, our Recreation Aviation Australia registered RV9a made it's first flight on the 10th of April. No vices, in fact after trimming it flew hands off. Unfortunately had to cut the first flight short due to a rough running engine that developed after take-off. But looking forward to sorting the problem out and doing some testing.

Aircraft weighed in on a set of longacre motor racing scales at 893 lb (406 kg). The airframe of the quickbuild kit was unmodified in any way or form, to achieve that weight. A Conical mounted 0-235 C2C was chosen and modified to Lyc's LSA 0-233 spec's (with bolt-on equipment etc). along with a Catto two blade prop and numerous other under cowl modifications to save weight. RV12 type seats and instrument panel fitted with a Dynon D180 EFIS, X-Com radio and Trigg transponder, were fitted to the Spartan interior. A huge amount of time was spent researching and choosing the lightest equipment and gear available for this aircraft.

The A/c has been registered as a single seat, but now the long awaited 600 kg amendment has been initiated we will be able to re-install the right seat and stick (the seat and stick were installed when the A/C was weighed).

Here is a youtube link to our first flight for anyone that may be interested

Well done Bob, it's a credit to you and your off sider. She looks great.

  12. Yes Pud same as mine, the problem for me is I fly both regularly and always have done. But the point I'd make is I got my certificate in a HP aircraft and an TW endorsement in a thruster so I should have both automatically, so what's gone wrong. I don't see the point of it anyway.

  13. No. You get the endorsement pertinent to the aircraft you passed your licence test with as a starter (either LP or HP) Then if you are subsequently endorsed for the other performance level, that should have gone onto your Certificate and into your log book. You should not be flying an aircraft for which you don't have a qualifying endorsement. If I was you, I'd follow up with the CFI that endorsed you to fly the Jab. Is it classified as HP? (I would have thought it would be in the registration info, but it isn't... I just checked mine) Where's my Endo? Might just be a snafu in the paperwork!

I'm confused, my certificate [i just checked] has no endorsement for either LP or HP so where does that leave me. I did my training and test in a tecnam p92 that I would class as HP. I remember some time ago filling in a form with a renewal which I stated HP That I think was a few years ago now.

  14. Thanks eightyknots,I've got a serious case of "Low Altitude Sickness" to go with the disappointment I'm feeling at the moment. Definitely gotta get in the air soon.

    Pud

Hi Pud, just seen this thread for the first time, I feel sick, I can imagine how you feel having rebuilt mine as you know.

I hope you recover quickly and the engine too. The thruster looks great you've done a great job. you'll be in the air soon.

    Terry
