  1. All I am prepared to answer is the question regarding this site. Firstly and foremost, this site supports ALL recreational aviators, that includes RAAus, HGFA, GFA, powered chutes, General Aviation PPL, E&LAAA, and all others in between...this is my perspective as Site Administrator. With that aside, I am personally one that will be waiting in line to change over to E&LAAA on the first day

Thank you Ian. There was no suggestion that this site did not support recreational aviators.

Perhaps Keith or the CEO of E&LAAA could answer the question of whether the E&LAAA has gained CASA acreditation as an administering body yet and is authorised to issue pilot certificates/licences in its own right?

  2. For example your RAAus pilot certificate is NOT world recognised but the new body ones ARE.

Ian, ( &Keith?), that sentence implies that the E&LAAA has achieved recognised status as an administering organisation? Is that correct or a typo?

One would hope that the new org's aviation industry person consulted widely with its membership when drafting the manuals or the organisation is likely to suffer the same complaints and accusations of elitism that the RAA has endured in social media in recent times.

  3. On the ELAAA facebook page Keith has announced "The big day is getting closer!" and posted a photo of the ASIC registration of E&LAAA Pty Ltd effective 13 September 2016, with "Look at this, action is happening." ELAAA still describes itself as "ELAAA (Experimental Light Aircraft Aviators Australia) is a light sport aviation association yet to be approved to administer light aircraft in OZ."I am assuming ELAAA is in negotiations to become a self administering sport aviation organisation under CASA? Keith may be able to cryptically update us on progress and who the directors are and what they hope to administer, and when.

Gotta agree that It would be nice to have some solid information about the new group, their aims ideals and policies, but we still seem to be in the "I know a secret nudge nudge wink wink phase". If the new group is to be successful it will need to develop it's communication style into something more mature and less nebulous.

  4. Of course RAAus and GFA etc are simply divisions of CASA. CASA bought them for peanuts. Self administration is simply an illusion fostered by CASA to avoid taking responsibility if questions are asked in Parliament. If the political heat gets too great (say a glider or RAAus aircraft collides with a regional airliner on approach or departure from a country airport with tens of dead), CASA will simply shut down the organisation concerned and possibly all the others just to demonstrate that action has been taken. That of course means collective punishment for the members, something we shouldn't be doing in Australia to Australian citizens.

    Mike,

You are probably correct but you've also summed up very neatly why CASA is unlikely to ever agree to the changes you've outlined.

he organisations then can be honest brokers acting for the members (those who may freely choose to join) and acting as a political lobby on the members' behalf as well as promoting the activity and educating as to how to do it better and more safely. See Experimental Aircraft Association in the USA (EAA). Most successful organisation in sport and recreational aviation in the world and they have ZERO actual power. The organisations, to retain members, will have to perform like any other private bodies with something to sell and demonstrate value to customers in order to stay in business.

    Spot on!

  5. Thanks Kaz,

An interesting and enjoyable read. I regard my prop the same way I regard my circular saws; if they're not unplugged then they are on. My long term plan is to only ever start my Jab from the left seat but Dick's Doc is very handy to have as back of the mind info for when Murphy decides to get in the way.

  6. Yesterday I passed my annual Heavy Vehicle Driver's medical. Now I am considered physically and mentally fit to drive an 80-seater bendy bus fully loaded with school children at 100 kph on a freeway in peak hour traffic. However, according the CASA, I am not physically fit enough to fly solo circuits in a VH-registered Jabiru at my local airport (Camden).

OME , that's because CASA is obsessed with the idea that you could crash your Jab into an 80 seat bendy-bus full of school kids.

  7. There all wrecked angles now. The "hole" lot. Nev

Gotta think outside the square Nev.

Sorry Ian, I can't say I like the porthole look that the circular avatars have now. Seems more nautical than aviation themed now. I think the "On line now" flag is an innovation.

  8. As expected, the usual porch dogs yapping away at a result they don't like. All noise no ticker!

If the vote turn out was around the 1000 mark, as some have suggested, then that is a disappointing figure, but it is still the democratic choice of those who made the effort to vote. Hopefully the naysayers scan get over it and let the elected board get on with it. Am I being overly hopeful with that?

  9. I've only had one coffee this morning so I must admit to being a little bit slow, but I'm having trouble seeing the link to recreational flying in all this tosh. Have we drifted off topic?

It's claimed by some here that this site is the one true voice of recreational aviation. No wonder CASA ignores us!

  10. Duly chastised. Climbing back into my box.087_sorry.gif.8f9ce404ad3aa941b2729edb25b7c714.gif

No no no no no! No chastisement at all. I apologise if you read my response as a put down. It was not.

There is a shared IP agreement, and that's about the extent of the public knowledge. As far as I know it relates only to the engines not the airframes. I assume that like most similar agreements it would be commercial-in-confidence.

  11. You'd probably have to sign a 'no disclosure' affadavit!. That bunch would have more knowledge of both aero-engine design, development and certification, and the entire aircraft regulatory scene, than possibly any group of four in the entire Southern Hemisphere....Quite a few years ago now, there was a meeting between CASA and the majority of the major CAR 35 engineers in Australia, including Alan Kerr, Dafydd Llewellyn, Bill Whitney, Bob McGillivray, Bob Scott, Graeme Swannell and a few others. When 'introductions' were completed around the table, it turned out that there was considerably MORE actual CASA senior-level experience amongst the CAR 35 group than CASA could bring to the meeting..

Do I understand you to imply that CASA had less experience and technical knowledge than the people they were writing the rules for?

That wouldn't be the case today. Surely!

  12. More to the point, the poor attention to detail that the drafter(s) of the new instrument paid to their own CASA Jabiru Engine Reliability - Analysis Report speaks volumes of their ability to read, understand and rationally interpret the data originally demanded of them from the RAA that lead to the imposition of the original instrument.

    Woeful!
