  1. Twin Engine Drifter.

    Hi All,

There`s a guy up here who did a GA to Recreational aircraft conversion with me,who owns one.

I`ve had a look at it and it`s a big lump of a machine compared to the Drifter,it`s designed to take a third seat also, he told me it`s the only one in Australia.

    Cheers,

  2. Licence To Learn.

    Congratulations,Mathew,011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif It`s Great isn`t it?

When I started flying a very experienced agricultural pilot said to me,

"Frank, until you`ve done at least 500 hours you`re an accident looking for somewhere to happen,by 500 hrs every thing that could go wrong should have happened and if you`ve been able to handle it ,you should be ok.

For evermore make every flight a learning experience.

    Regards,

  3. Glider Time.

    Peter,

I couldn`t help but reply when I read a flight time of 5 minutes.

I taught a guy to fly who then went on to own a Sky Dart because his log book was half full of 5 minute flights in winch launched gliders.

    Cheers,

  4. Safety Culture.

    Thank you Kelvin,

I will accept that any thing or any way that can improve a safety culture is worth the effort.

I have just, simply been trying to say, that any system is only as good as those that it`s aimed at, wanting to apply it, and play the game,so to speek.

Where you start training depends exactly on what you want to achieve.

If you wish to start from a recreational flying school then the best place to start is by contacting,"Recreational Aviation Australia",the "RAA" for short ,they will give you all the information you require and the approved flying schools, hours flown can be used towards a commercial licence.

The email address is, [email protected]

    The website is, www.raa.asn.au

I`ve been skydiving also but the buzz didn`t last as long as flying my Drifter.

    Cheers,

    Frank.

  6. "GOOD AND BAD IS RELATIVE",there also lies the rub.

There will always be good and bad in everything and in everyone in life and in my opinion,no system will ever change that,no matter how well meaning it is.

GA flying schools don`t come any better than one we have in our area ,the CFI is a friend on mine since our teens, instructing has been his life and always will be.

Over the years I`ve had people complain, bitterly to me, about what they perceived to be, bad instruction and behaviour from that school.?????

I`m only trying to make a point with that example, nothing else.

    To the What and How.

If we`re going to talk about the "What and How" I think we need to discuss what the "What and How" is or I dont think there`s much point in the discussion other than to pass the time, what are we going to achieve, please explain it to me.

  7. Tony,

As I see it,the whole idea of Recreational Aviation has changed from what it was originaly intended to be.

There`s no chance of developing a system that will take care of every issue or member,I wouldn`t want the job and I don`t think that there`s many who would,I believe the RAA is trying to manage too many interests.

On the issue of keeping students satisfied with their training then wanting to continue flying,we need to go back and ask, what was the original concept?, and it was, basically, minimum requirement,(FUN FLYING).Who thinks that is what it realy is today?.

I never lost a student due to my teaching methods, even though I required a high standared of ability,I made it fun.In my opinion a good instructor works with the student not the system.

I must say, truthly, that I realy don`t know all the answers to a lot of the questions we now face,we`re playing a different ball game, let`s just keep throwing the issues around and see what we get.

  8. 098_welcome.gif.81ff07d492568199326e4f64f78d7bc6.gif Skyfox99,

I got involved with flying, over 20 years ago, when, after seeing a very basic Ultralight, I got the bug and built a copy of a 2 seat Chinook, then had to learn to fly it,there was no twin seat instruction, legal, at the time,it did everything best, around 50kts,fast is realy only better if you`re in a hurry to get somewhere.

Building my own then having to learn to fly it was one of the greatest experiences of my life, completely different to all the other thrilling experiences I`ve had,I also have a Maxair Drifter that I used for training.

I hope you enjoy the forum.

  9. Dead LOg Book.

    098_welcome.gif.81ff07d492568199326e4f64f78d7bc6.gif Brad,

I could be wrong in your case, however, as with all dead things they are usually buried.

If the school still exists there may be a chance,if not,I doubt it.

A log book is only some paper with past history on it and doesn`t represent your present capabilities, what you do from now on is what counts towards your next solo.

  10. Hi Gerry,002_wave.gif.62d5c7a07e46b2ae47f4cd2e61a0c301.gif

You are correct about the extra weight on the wire braced, Maxair Drifter, they were built by "Austflight Aviation",and became 65 Kilos heavier due to CASA. requirements,so they could be used for twin seat training,I have one of their early certified ones,You are correct about the strut braced also.

Wayne Fisher, of Spectrum Aviation, who was one of Austflight`s original aircraft builders, runs his own factory and flying school and produces lighter versions which he still calls the Drifter.
