  1. Hi Darren,

     

    Well it just so happens to be that my friend had this identical problem as you with his 582 (installed to a trike also). One of your ignition circuits is simply not working in this instance as you diagnosed yourself with removing the leads of one side.

     

    The 1st thing we checked was the ignition switches for possible buildup of moisture and resistance inside by using a multi-meter & physically checking the wiring connections to the switches (need to pull the foam sleeve off to get access) but they were sound also, so all was good there.

     

    Then we ended up swapping the two electronic ignition units around, re-started the engine and the fault subsequently transferred to the other switch, bingo! so the failure was one of the electronic ignition units. He bought a new one from Bert Floods for $180 and back in business!

     

    If this does not fix your problem then it could be caused by a malfunction of the

     

    trigger coil inside the engine crankcase. This trigger coil picks up signals from the flywheel which fire the ignition circuit via the electronic ignition unit and is more fiddly to get to.

Aviation is so "non existant" in Australia compared to other countries like the USA (same land mass as Australia) in a USA "ERSA" equivilent book, they have over 20,000 GA & corporate airfields listed not to mention unlicenced/unregistered aerodromes not included. You can fly out of a CTAF type airfield in a typical US city within 6NM of a major international airport and the airspace abuts so close to it that you have to take an early turn on base to miss the adjoining CTA. Have blimps and jear jets in the circuit pattern and a line of heavies on top of that and how many mid airs are there?? Despite the large population and the urbanising of land in the US, the US government highly promote aviation there. We on the other hand rely on AOPA to lobby the government to keep the bastards honest, but $$$$ talks.

     

    The pilot shortage in Oz continues to worsen also, gee I wonder why that could be?

  3. thanks Gents for the very interesting feedback and info, :clap:I initially thought the same as J430 about strobes. The red beacon idea does sound interesting, I fly from a busy GA airfield, although I do have good comms - I often worry whether if others can see me as microlights are difficult to see particularly from the front & rear due to the small cross sectional area. I can usually see most of the local/circuit traffic but I can't see directly behind me and as I do only 50 kts, I get a little paranoid on a busy day that someone could plough into the back of me.

  4. Hi Folks,

     

    Just wondering whether if there is anyone out there who has strobe lights fitted to their microlight? if so,

     

    (1) are they AC or DC? which is better?

     

    (2) has it ever caused you grief with interference through the comms or radio or other problems?

     

    (3) are you happy with your strobe lights and if so, where did you get them from?

     

    I fitted a 12VDC strobe light (alarm box style) from Dick Smith to my base tube as a trial and it just wasn't bright enough to be seen.

     

    any info apreciated

  5. Hey Gary, thanks for the tip perhaps WD40 would do the trick too? to get my whole exhaust ceramic coated was $340 incl postage. To get a replacement new exhaust system for a 582cc is approx $650, so it's worth getting done and I couldn't believe how good it came up.

     

    All the new trikes these days have it done. HPS in VIC is the mob that ceramic coat all the exhausts for Bert Floods when they import them from Rotax Austria.

  6. Hey Folks,

     

    About 8 months ago I decided to get my exhaust system ceramic coated in black, it's out of my Rotax 582 (grey top) motor. Couldn't stand looking at the surface rust and pitting anymore. The exhausts on the newer blue top motors get this done now. The facility in Melb did a great job of it, is there anything (e.g a polish) that I could apply to it from time to time to maintain the high lusture finish and protect the coating?

  7. Hi Adam, I fly a microlight with a 582cc 2 stroke motor. I average between 100 to 120 hrs a year. Which approx equates to 2-3 hours a week. Most Microlight people here in the Hunter Valley/NSW Mid North Coast average about the same too. I knock off work at 4PM and especially during daylight saving time, I manage to squeeze some more airtime in during the week, but with the onset of winter now, i'm just a weekend pilot. I live 35 mins away from the airfield where I fly so that helps too, i'm also single which is a bonus :) I sympathise for you and I hope that you can find yourself a place to keep your machine closer by, it looks nice.

  8. Hi Turbo,

     

    It is not recommended to use any fuel that has been blended with ethanol as per the manufacturer's recommendations, having said that I know a guy who has used it in his 582cc without any ill effects. In the USA most people have no choice but to use Avgas 100LL in their aircraft as motor vehicle fuels have been blended down with ethanol.

  9. Does anyone know what the tyre pressures are meant to be for an Airborne Edge X (called a Classic nowadays) Microlight? particularly for the left and right main tyres as they just started to look slightly under inflated.

     

    I checked the airborne manual and decals on the base tube, nothing is mentioned about tyre pressures which is rather strange as this info I think is important. Also is there a rule of thumb with different tyre pressures for sealed or grass or dirt runways?

  10. Hi LJS,

     

    I like to fly regularly and I average around 100-120 hrs/yr. I was hoping to find something with hangarage obviously happy to pay all costs and upkeep of the airfield. I am in the RAAF and at Williamtown atm, I expect a posting sometime later this year to Richmond and would hope to do the same amount of flying there if possible.

  12. Hi there,

     

    I fly a microlight equipped with a 582cc Rotax (grey top) motor, The engine has done 280 hrs and still runs like a swiss clock. I would like to ask if anyone knows when to do an engine "de-coke/de-carbon" servicing and whether if it's really paramount to do so, any warning signs and what is exactly involved if so. I can't find any information in my Rotax engine manual. Any comments/opinions would be greatly appreciated by you all.
