1. Thought might be best to have its own thread. Any apps that you use and find useful.AWIS has all the phone numbers for awis around the country.

Dual gps goes woth my dual gps and allows the ipad to have much better accuracey. But you need the dual gps reciever worth about $150

Windfinder is ok for winds , but ive since found willyweather which is an excellent weather app. Very comprehensive and highly recommended. Has first last light etc as well.

Weatherzone+ is also a great weather app, but willy weather is better for winds and ain etc. weatherzone is good for govt issued alerts eg hail or strong winds.

I use google earth for rout planning to check on tiger country / landing options. And the visibility of waypoints.

Auto dens was recomended by Dazza and i havent used ot yet.but it grabs your location and gives you the closest metar altitude density. If it runs a wrong location you just edit the input numbers.

    Ozrunways needs no introduction.

Emergency+ gives you lots of useful info in an emergency including your exact latitude and lomgitude so you can be rescued with accuracey. Avail on apple and android.

Naips is awesome for getting weather and notams from airservices australia. Then use the email function to select all text and paste it i to the plain english met service at http://www.pemet.com.au

Rain gives you an instant shot of your local bom radar for storm cells or rain.

Around me is great when you arrive somewhere and want to know whats around you in terms of food, accom, fuel , atm etc.

ultimate gps is basically a really good digital compass. Done via gps so makes it easy to follow a heading.

On the android phone screen- the top photo

The first one in red is a bookmark straight to my willyweather.com.au local weather page its brilliant. Well worth a look.

naips is a bookmark to airservices australia page, not an app.

Those e6b calculators are brilliant. Especially the Flyby E6B which is a free trial version .

Flight compass and wind calc are pretty basic. Not really recommended.

Anyhow thats my favs ...so far.

Hopefully otherswill have some great ones.

thanks zoos your post was helpful.monty

  2. hey guys.Did anybody catch last nights episode of outback coroner on crime channel (foxtel)/.

It was about the 2008 prang in a 206 that claimed 3 people? It was a little hard to watch at times, but showed very well the process involved in a caronial inquest and the questions that get asked and of whom.

The runs are on the board in this event, they know it was a CFIT after poor decisions, it seemed to be purposeful entry into IMC. The most difficult bit to swallow was the fact he had his young son with him who was killed.

Some of the police and investigators on the show were familiar to me (unfortunately) but it was good to see the professionalism and the caring manner they dealt with the families and those onsite. I can tell you its that sort of thing that makes the difference.

If you have foxtel, be sure to catch a repeat of it this week. Very good production. (instructors, pay attention)

    which channel on foxtel?

  3. I recently came due for the regular eye check- up, with a trip to the local optometrists. Only required a slight prescription adjustment in one eye this time. Seems we are living longer and our eyes can actually get better as we age, which was news to me.Next came the selection of new lenses and frames....Mmmm new glasses !................

I have been a Ray Ban user for many years , and have always liked the Aviator range of frames with the 'Outdoorsman ' spring temples. They just feel right under a pair of headsets, and always give great glare- reduction and visibility in the air.

Now I know you airline pilot types, and would-be commercial pilots prefer Serigetis, but the Seringeti frames I was informed, as nice as they are, won't take all the prescription lenses , so therefore lens choice is limited with those in some cases.

The Ray Ban Aviator range originated back in WW2 for bomber and fighter pilots who who needed help with the glare of high altitude flying..The green G-15 lenses which block 85% of visible light were issued to the new B-29 Superfortress crews, as it was the first pressurised high-altitude bomber, and high altitude glare was a problem in the Pacific. Thus began the legend of Ray Ban Aviators.

One of my old UL pilot friends Jack Chapman in California, was an ex-WW2 B-29 crewman. After he strapped in to his early 80s ultralight, he would pull out his old worn glasses case from his jacket, and put on his original issue, WW2 Ray Ban Aviators with Greeen G-15 lenses. Well to say the least it always made me green with envy !!....Old Jack was on Tinian Island when they loaded the first A-bomb on the Enola Gay for delivery to Japan, after they had dug a big trench and taxied the huge bomber over it. He said they all thought it was a big joke that one measly bomb was going to end the war !!...the new shiny B-29s were the new kids on the block, and the only US bomber at that stage not yet proven in action.

Anyway back to my new Bans'......Ray Ban have recently updated their Aviator range, whilst maintaining the authentic look and feel, they have incorporated modern materials to make them even better. They now have names like Ultra Aviatior, (what red-blooded flyer could resist that !), Aviator Titanium, and Carbon Aviators. The previous metal temples which would corrode pretty good from sweat, have now been replaced with composite carbon- fiber ones which should last forever and feel even more comfortable.

I went with the 'Carbon' Frame (B8301) aviators with graduated lenses. They still have the rugged feel and comfort under the headsets, and the carbon temples are a winner. Flew last week with them for the first time and the glare reduction and general visual comfort is most impressive. Up here in the tropics it's almost mandatory ......love for you eyes !..I'm told lense manufacturing technology has improved leaps and bounds recently also.

For those into fashion or style, Ray Ban have also upgraded their classic 'Wayfarer' range made famous by many Hollywood actors including Jack Nicholson, Marilyn Munroe, Dennis Hopper plus the likes of US president J.F.Kennedy who was often seen sporting Wayfarers during times off when sailing, and the legendary Howard H Hughes. The 'new' Wayfarers have recieved new modern materials also, but retain the classic style, and apparently are being bought like hot cakes by the 'new' younger generations !...who have discovered them for their retro value. They still continue to be used to great advantage by modern movie actors and actresses.

I 'll Probabily give my old metal Bans' a fly now and then, just for old times sake (they have several hundred flight hours on them!) but right now the new Carbon jobbies are the go for this aviator !.............Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif 014_spot_on.gif.1f3bdf64e5eb969e67a583c9d350cd1f.gif

  4. Just checked Daves' spider tracks and looks like he's on the ground at Toraddin which I believe is his final stop. He had been delayed over the past couple of days with fog in the area, so no doubt he and crew will be happy to have completed the big trip around the island.CONGRATULATIONS DAVE AND THE WHOLE CREW........WELLDONE!!!!!!!,..............012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif012_thumb_up.gif.83e1b5422694a022eec36e1e8343f687.gif011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif
