    New 701 Builder

    Good Day again, I have finished the rudder assembly. The rest of the work went smoothly. I have never been a master of the sheet metal snips, however I managed a nice finish. Laurie, I took your advice and used a bucking bar with a hide hammer and gently tapped out the crease, I can see it, but others can barely notice it now. http://www.mykitlog.com/tadge/ Off flying again tomorrow, so will get a start on the horizontal stab on my return late this month.     G'day All, I had grand plans of spending most of today finishing the rudder... The skeleton was skinned with the rear skin, only issue I had was keeping the rib center lines lined up with the skin pilot holes, when one rib is in place then trying to get the next rib lined up it would shift a few mil, annoying but sorted with some tape in the end. Drilling was completed to #40 initially. Nose skin installed and was straight forward. When flipping the rudder to play with the nose skin fit, I bumped one of the clecos against the jig beams and it put a stress mark on the skin... Not happy. I have stopped work on it for today and hope to get some info from the sheet metal guy at work. Although only a small mark the skin is .016 and it will inevitably crack if not dealt with.     G'day 80kt, I'm only logging time that I spend working on the build, ie. Reading plans or actually doing something. If I logged the time I have spent watching homebuilthelp DVDs, reading the manuals, research, going to the hardware etc. I would have already exceeded the recommended build time :) Included in the time today was some prep work for the skins. If everyone tried to log the time they were doing something constructive it would be a better gauge for expected build time. Hope that made sense. Brendon

  5. G'day, I just had a read of the SR22 ECL. After the 'Engine Failure In Flight' memory items the checklist then reads "If the engine fails at altitude, pitch as necessary to establish best glide speed. While gliding toward a suitable landing area, attempt to identify the cause of the failure and correct it. If altitude or terrain does not permit a safe landing, CAPS deployment may be required. Refer to Section 10, Safety Information, for CAPS deployment scenarios and landing considerations". So depending on the terrain in the area it appears the pilot in this case followed the ECL as published. Regards, Brendon

    G'day 80, I'm sure excited. Its sure been a long time in the works! As soon as the box turned up I did a stocktake and it was 100%. The packaging was better than what I have received from the likes of Sikorsky or Eurocopter so very impressed to say the least. Regards, Brendon

    G'day All, After a longer than usual stint at work and a two week wait for an electrician to wire up the garage for 15a, I finally got a start. Monday I'll alodine and paint thn all going well I should have the skeleton riveted up ready for skins mid week. I'll make a short update here when I update the Kitlog site for those interested.   8. Quick question for anyone with SR22 time. What does the RFM ECL read in regards to engine failure? (i.e. pull chute as standard procedure or as last resort?) Is there any published stats that suggest fatal injuries sustained after a chute deployment at altitude? Regards, Brendon

    Well the tail kit turned up today. Unfortunately we are short on pilots at work so it will have to wait 3 weeks before I can start. Still awaiting an electrition to show up to wire up the garage for 15a for the compressor, after having 2 no show just to quote... Business must be good! Been watching the homebuilthelp vids and studying the plans, I think I'm ready. Tadge

    G'day Hongie, The Sav was certainly on my list. I chose the 701 purely because it has been on my to do list for some time now, plus I just like it (slats etc)... There is no doubt the Sav has far better specs and price is on par for both. I fly for a living, and the machinery I'm on has every toy under the sun. I just want a simple aircraft for poking around locally. If I want to go long distance, I'll take a burner! If your after an allrounder the Sav will fit the bill better than the 701 IMO. Having said that a 701 and 601 will do it all. On another note, the Sav only comes as a complete kit. As my shed plans got canned I only have limited storage, I am building the 701 from component kits to save some space, downside is the extra shipping costs. Regards, Brendon
