  1. In my example, the filter is slightly inclined upwards towards the OUT end, which leads to the engine driven pump, and from there to the carb. The routing (not the angle) is as per Jabiru instructions of the day. 500+ hours and 16 years operation like this. So in the filter, tank side is fuel, engine side is air. Have tried a few things to purge the air but nope. I am glad that I do have the clear filter so that I can see what is going on and see if ever anything accumulates in there, dirt, muck, debris, a possum, etc. never had anything in the filter.

I'm convinced that my occasional fluffy idle started when I changed filter brand. My records show it to be true. True as in, that's when it all began, almost right after, but I've only just realised.

I'll need to fly some more before declaring "case closed"

Or I might go back to the original spec RYCO Z14 fuel filter, but alas, they are made who knows where overseas now too. RYCO overseeing quality control these days? Who knows.

RYCO ceased the remaining half of their filter manufacturing in Melbourne in Feb 2005. Since then, everything is sourced overseas.

  2. Cheap and nasty, and specified in the Jabiru Maintenance manual (though not with those words of course - generically speaking).

I've always used quality RYCO filters since 2005, for about 500 hours, now sadly, RYCO now gets their stuff manufactured who knows where.

I bought the Jabiru filter primarily to see exactly what it was. Brand X. (Joywell - Taiwan).

I see where I work that many brand name car parts are manufactured wherever too, Indonesia, Mexico, Portugal, Thailand, and of course C.H.Ina. Oil filters?- throw a dart at a world map.

  3. I fitted new Cooper filter today. Test idle for 10 mins, all good. Took it for a flight, all good. Took cowl off, filter about half full, which as far as I recall, is about the normal level.

Filter pics. Cut the old one open, shows where the cartridge had come off the whatever at the OUT end, possibly restricting flow on the IN end, and the OUT end. Maybe.

Engine idle in flight today felt rock solid, back to normal. Will continue to watch carefully.....

  4. Pleated paper type - yes. I like to keep things simple and use what it's supposed to have Skip.

I have used what was recommended by the engine manufacturer for the last 16 years, no problem. I shall fit the new Cooper filter probably tomorrow, and report my findings.

Will also be looking at a few other things, fuel pump too. Fuel pump is higher than the filter, so it's not draining up hill. Got me stumped.

Those Hengst filters look good - I shall read up on those.

  5. Here's an odd one that has me rather stumped.

Jabiru 2200, over 500 hours. Have always used RYCO fuel filters, the simple plastic ones. Changed each 2 years.

2019 annual, I fitted the JOYWELL filter as supplied by Jabiru. Soon after, I now realise, I started having occasional rough idle. Open throttle, all good.

In the past, the fuel filter usually sat at about 2/3 to 3/4 full. Today, and I've seen it recently too, fuel filter was totally empty. I don't understand how that is even possible.

Removed it and found the filter cartridge inside was loose, detached from the fuel OUT end, rattling around inside the plastic case. I cut it open to mess around with it.

No fuel leaks anywhere, I just don't understand how the filter can be empty and the engine still runs. The Joywell filter has a double size hose nipple for 1/4 or 5/16 hose. I'm going to fit a Cooper filter, 1/4 inch hose size.

I have the standard engine pump, and the standard Facet elec boost pump.

Any fuel filter theories out there? Why is my filter empty.

    Thanks!

  7. As far as I understand it, the cafe was set up for and council approved for Airside access, only. (with visions of expanding to public access for passing traffic, of which there is a lot).

It became apparent, apparently, that public access was never going to get approved by council. Dunno why. Other than supposedly, they didn't want the public wandering Airside. Well we all know that's a no brainer to solve.

  8. 200 or so left listed, probably at least the same or more "reserved" but still, it's not a lot is it.

Imagine if all the RAAus and other organisations had to VH register too - we would have run out long ago.

ICAO has allocated VH to Australia, maybe beyond that, Australia can do whatever they like. AAA, go to four letters ABCD, it's a question I have often wondered about.

If we go to four letters, we may be able to have as much fun as say UK with examples like G-WHIZ, G-FORC, G-IDDY, G-RIDE.

    VH-ELLO? Nah. VH-WIND. VH-FART. VH-ACDC! VH-STFU, VH-PIPR, VH-CSNA, VH-GROB, VH-ARRV, The world is our oyster!

I see New Zealand already has ZK, ZL and ZM available. Generally, they often do not display the ZK mark.

At Tauranga one year I saw MOM, DAD, SON, NAN, POP, SIS, (not sure about CUZ and BRO) all lined up.

  10. Bacchus Marsh Victoria for example, the transfer deed (from Dept of Transport and Communications) on behalf of the Commonwealth to the President, Councillors and Ratepayers of the Shire of Bacchus Marsh was signed on 9 October 1992. And with that transfer, the local authority (the shire etc) agreed to certain things as set out in the deed. Including accepting $240,000 grant for various works to be completed within 5 years.

The whole shebang was leased for 50 years from 22 DEC 1993 to Western Region Sporting Aviation Group Inc. "at no cost".

Some names have of course changed since 1993.

  11. You can drive into any of these towns, stay a few days, spend your $, and get charged nothing for entering or parking as long as you like in the street (meters excepted).

You don't pay for upkeep of the parks, the roads, council services, nothing.

Fly a plane in and let's go baby, the cash cow has arrived.
