IFR aircraft in IMC don't give 15min position reports....The quoted references on the previous page state that aircraft should broadcast when required (if you read the CAR it states when required to avoid a collision) not when the pilot feels like. Centre is already full of useless information I have to listen to (and they're required to give me so not a go at the controller) the last thing we need is every VFR Tom Dick and Harriet giving position reports on centre and the effect would be a decrease in the level of safety due frequency congestion and less diligent monitoring of area.

     

    Most definitely monitor frequency which is a requirement anyways if equipped and fly hemispheric, if unsure of a situation broadcast but don't come up with a 'rule' of your own that keeps you warm and fuzzy with a reduced safety level.

    So when is it required to avoid a collision? Only when you hear something? And is that only when someone is gibbering on unnecessarily? And if thats the case doesn't that make the gibbering pilot the safe one, since people hear and respond?

    If as you may be implying extremely rarely, then why does CASA promote alerted see and avoid so much?

     

    Im not saying your wrong, Im interested in some facts on how you believe safety can be improved above alerted see and avoid which relies on transmission and listening, not just listening... its theoretically and practically impossible to have alerted see and avoid unless people are reporting positions.

     

     

  4. DrZoosThe RAAus are recognising the course as an alternative pathway to L1. Everyone who has completed it, (regardless of what they fly, so fixed wing and weightshift alike), have received their L1 rating and therefore do not need to do the on-line test.

     

    We supply a list of names to RAAus Technical after each course.

     

    The course is referenced in the new RAAus Technical Manual, but unfortunately was not mentioned in the group email sent out recently, or in the Sport Pilot.

  5. In my view, the deficiency with only speaking up when they report an unidentified aircraft is , if you have two VFR aircraft without flight plans, ATC will never make that announcement. They will only report it if one is IFR or has flight following (perhaps an ATC staffer can correct me if that is wrong)

     

    In terms of chances of mid air, twice flying from Port Macquarie to Scone I have had close encounters, not near misses, but close encounters, as the cloud on the ranges often forces aircraft to fly at variable altitudes. I have only flown that route about 6 times.

     

    In one case ATC advise me as I had flight following , they advised about 10 seconds before we passed, and I had not spotted them. About 100ft in altitude below me and 200ft to my left. In the other case we had no idea, I had made a position report with altitude around 10min earlier on correct area frequency. This one was about50 feet above me and to y right 200-300 feet. Both these I was at 8500 feet heading west on a corrected AREA QNH. In both cases all aircraft had limited options with altitude due to a lot of localised cloud.

Im not referring to aircraft in CTAF or ALA circuits etc, only transmitting aircraft, so it shouldn't get annoying for long given most aircraft flying at 100kt and above do not remain in most area frequencies for too long. Sure some remote areas that might be the case but in the eastern seaboard areas, making 15 minute calls its likely you're going to only make two calls per area, which is hardly excessive or annoying, especially when your only basically giving a location heading and altitude..

     

    Got to be careful with comments like this guys as this is not what the safety gurus are telling us, they are telling us we need to be moving towards alerted see and avoid... and they want us to use the radio to do so...

     

    According to CASA

     

    3.4.1.1 Area VHF safety benefits Alerted see-and-avoid In order to gain the maximum safety benefits of alerted see-and-avoid, pilots must be monitoring and, when necessary, broadcasting on the same frequency. CASA publishes guidance on the safety benefits of alerted see-and-avoid in CAAP 166-2(1). In order to be monitoring the same frequency, the details of those frequencies must be clearly understood and interpreted by all pilots and published in the AIP and on aeronautical charts. Currently the appropriate frequency to use in Class G airspace is Area VHF4 , except where an aerodrome symbol, CTAF frequency label or Broadcast Area is published on an aeronautical chart. Alerted see-and-avoid is also dependent on pilots being aware of the potential existence and approximate location of other traffic in their immediate vicinity

    In order for the radio to have good safety benefit as an alerted see and avoid or for situational awareness one must broadcast and one must listen and it must occur often enough to actually be alerted, so you can see and avoid in time to avoid a collision. Many aircraft in class G fly at 100kt to 120kt with a head on approach speed of 200-240kt. In 15 minutes two RAA aircraft or GA can approach by 50nm+ to a collision point... its not so excessive when you view it that way...

    5.1 As aviation developed, increasing performance, traffic density and flight in non-visual conditions caused limitations of see-and-avoid to surface. The need to enhance a pilot’s situational awareness has led to the principle of ‘alerted see-and-avoid’.

     

    5.2 The primary tool of alerted see-and-avoid that is common across aviation—from sport and recreational to air transport—is radio communication. Radio allows for the communication of information (in this instance traffic information) to the pilot from the ground (e.g. air traffic control) or from other aircraft.

  7. Imagine if every ultralight and GA in class G made position reports on area every 15 minutes....

    After talking recently with CASA's manager of radio congestion (not sure of exact title) but hes an old friend from childhood, That's why the charts change so often... CASA monitors radio congestion very closely and the idea is they want us to use the radio for situational awareness (Im not suggesting overuse or rambling on when you do make a call) , but they are quite prepared to split frequencies further if and when congestion does arise... according to their manager of that section that is one of the main reasons charts have such a short life...

    I'm against overuse of the radio, but by the same token its there to help with situational awareness and they have no right to tell him to be quiet...

     

    Very hard to be situationally aware if no one is communicating, and we can say all we like that you should be looking which is true....

     

    But we also know that there are a lot of times your looking at a map, a list, doing a calculation... if someone is heading in my general, Id love to know so please don't shut up for my sake....

Nonsense, every last one of the 'poor minnows' are well overpaid and no longer have any concept that they are supposed to be employed as our servants.I guess making the rules, enforcing the rules and getting pay higher wages and with better conditions will do that... the whole show needs a role reversal. Start by locking their wages at private sector average less 10% and then lock CASA staff numbers to aviation industry employment numbers. No reason it should not remain proportional or be decreasing as technology continually improves their productivity. That's how the real world works.

    actually not true... I put in the sternest of complaints recently to CASA and low and behold one of my great mates from schools older brother who I used to get doubled by on motor bike trips through the bush works for them... He calls me up , we spend about 2 hours on the phone and he certainly does have our interest at heart... Whether he can shift the momentum of stupid bureaucracy is another story... As many will know I literally HATE avmed, but I do feel for the staff of this stupid behemoth

  10. Frank, we have met the enemy and as you point out, it is us! As has been patently obvious over the past few years, as long as they have access to air space, the bulk of RAA members couldn't give a toss about how their money is spent or where the organization is heading or whether the Board has an overall effective objective (or perhaps, as some have suggested, a private agenda), and won't be bothered poking their head over the parapet until after the engagement is futile. Others, myself included, are so fed up with the curious management (??) style that interest has been lost in questioning what's being done and why it's being done and to whose benefit. At the present rate of spiral into impossibility I reckon the wheels of RAA (AUF as we knew it) will fall off about the time that I have to hang up my headphones so I selfishly ignore the current curious Board thinking. I despair of the fate of the rag & tube fraternity under the guidance of the present regime. Rgds Riley

  11. With $70,000.00 on self promotion and advertising in the budget (or at least the last one I bothered to read) how much do think is reasonable? I obviously have a different opinion of effective use of members money!Think about measurable results V BS - we are not a chain store trying to sell consumables - but that is an individual view which many may (and apparently do) agree with. I can accept that but just shake my head in disbelief.

    Seriously??????..they have a built in newsletter subscription directly to every member's inbox they could promote them year round for $200 and that includes wages they already pay... its peanuts, for a HIGHLY desirable outcome.

    My suggestion is not that they make it compulsory or that they pay

     

    But certainly, certify them, encourage it and maybe subsidise it a bit...

     

    Even if RAA just did all their promotion and certified them thats better then the status quo

     

     

  13. Ive Done Kev and Carol MCNalley's rotax course twice now and it leaves anything RAAus is doing in its wake.... I think RAAus is taking a lot of steps in the right direction, but, God only knows why RAA hasn't endorsed them and a few similarly qualified guru's to travel and train everyone to at least a level 1...

    We may as well start buying banana plantations in Brazil because 50 members eat bananas and two people travel to Brazil per annum

     

     

  15. I have an iPad mini and used to have an iPAd... tome the more important consideration is memory size and processing speed. AvPlan is easy the biggest thing on my iPad and takes up around 1/3 of my total iPad memory at times...

     

    The processing speed occasionally causes it to crash....

     

    So more important than screen size will be memory size and processor... having said that we have a cheap aldi tablet as a backup, cost $75 and is a perfect backup using screenshots only.

    Also makes sense if its within 3 hours of say 20% of our members...

     

    Now put yourself on the other side of the fence and contribute an extra $100 for an airfield you will never use, then contribute $100 to fly RAA members to Canberra to meet with CASA 9 days per week.

     

     

  17. I dont want to pay membership to maintain an airfield I may never use! Im happy for them to be at one and have a flyin, but not own it!

     

    Also imagine the huge expense of constantly flying the troops to Canberra to meet with the Devils.

     

    Buy the aircraft you're going to fly 95% of the time. Leave RAA where it needs to be 95% of the time.
