Didn't it crash 10-15 metres from 60 people? You're barking up the wrong tree.Regulator intervention comes when the risk to other people from your activities exceeds their comfort level. Aside from direct friends and relatives, nobody else dwells on it too much if you kill just yourself in the informed pursuit of a dangerous activity. However if you crash into a school classroom in the pursuit of your dangerous activity, or you take out 2 or 3 other people, or you even make it look possible that you will do so, then everybody starts caring.....a lot.Grounding would be the most severe action, but it is invariably a temporary measure to allow urgent safety action to be taken before getting things back in the air. I have seen a number of groundings in my aviation career for this reason. But there are no indications that this is going to happen.....yet.

Great Ian. Look forward to a catch up. 3-5pm will be an open forum so any concerns, comments, suggestions or questions from any of your forum members (if they are RAAus Members) can be raised for discussion in a less formal manner if they wish.

Mike, Good on you for putting this post up. In my time I have come across a few pilots that when talking too have indicated similar feelings to yourself. At least one of them gave up flying. I think if you are having rservations it is wise to take a break and talk it through with friends, other pilots or a professional. I go on the concept if it is not fun don't do it. On a few occasions I have hopped into friends planes and gone for a fly and experienced an un-easy feeling that they really arn't fully flying the plane to a level I am comfortable with. Needless to say I don't climb in again. The saying is :Those that cannot do , teach .And those that cannot teach , teach others to teach :
It's got nothing to do with this thread .
I understand only to well at the reading of the accident posts, ect ect .
I still haven't flown ,and the avo's been ready for months .
I'm at the stage now of thinking it may be time to hand up the headsets ,
I am at this stage scared of flying , it's hard to explain , but last month a friend flu me from y plc to home and after we landed I broke out in a sweet and was feeling rather odd .every one noticed.
I carn't even watch that show on telly anymore
AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS
These deaths and prangs DO have an effect on us all !
I haven't got the answer
Mike
Some days I just don't feel like flying and choose NOT to fly on these days.
Wish you the best. Have a chat to a few instructors might help. Never feel pressured to fly!!

Jim Tatlock.

Hi all,
I am yet to personally meet Michael Linke but am confident he will be the Manager RAAus requires to get us moving forward again. He brings skills and knowledge of running not for profits and working with volunteer boards. I also do not want to discount the great effort and progress Mark Clayton contributed. We still have hurdles but are making progress.
In relation to comments about Don Ramsey he has been nothing but helpful to many on the board. I am currently discussing our constitution with Don and hoping some future changes will be proposed to advance the Association.

John,Hi Don,Hi Don,
Could you please advise how many applicants were received for the position of CEO, & furthermore what do the minutes of the general Committee meeting show as to the final vote for the accepted Applicant.
The minutes of this subject Committee meeting relating to this matter would no doubt be on record & available to members should same be requested as per the Constitution & Company Code.
Cheers
John
30 Applications received. Shortlisted to 5. 5 interviews conducted. A total of 10 votes from the board in favour of Michael Linke. Remaining board members did not vote or comment.
The matter was discussed in Camera on our Webforums.

I read via google that a chopper did a sweep with magnetron recently. Do not know the result. Also it looks like ATSB recently did something with the file in June 2014.

Ladies and gents,
RAAus has two trained investigator consultants working with the SA police to determine the most likely cause. If any information comes that we can legally release to the membership we will ASAP. From photos and locations items have been observed it is suspected the aircraft suffered a significant failure. What caused the failure is not yet determined.

A Mexican newspaper reports that bored Royal Air Force pilots stationed on the Falkland Islands have devised what they consider a marvelous new game. Noting that the local penguins are fascinated by airplanes, the pilots search out a beach where the birds are gathered and fly slowly along it at the water's edge. Perhaps ten thousand penguins turn their heads in unison watching the planes go by, and when the pilots turn around and fly back, the birds turn their heads in the opposite direction, like spectators at a slow-motion tennis match. Then, the paper reports, "The pilots fly out to sea and directly to the penguin colony and overfly it. Heads go up, up, up, and ten thousand penguins fall over gently onto their backs.

Hello all, I'm guessing most here are L2's. I just want to place my personal view point on this issue. Firstly I don't believe Darren Tech Manager will insist you perform 4 x annuals. The letter specifically mentions "Exemptions may be approved via agreement". If you send your office copy of work performed in I am sure it would be reviewed and if it demonstrates currency then presto you have a renewed L2.
I spoke to Darren yesterday and today and he re-in force the above. If you are active I see no obstacle to getting l2 renewed via agreement with tech.

Spoke with him today and he says that's is not the case.
Jim.
Jim - "Firstly I don't believe Darren Tech Manager will insist you perform 4 x annuals"Yes he is. Unless anything changes from here, that is exactly what he told me when I rang him.[/Q -
Nope. Different.Would he be the same Peter Franks that was a CASA examiner in the 80s?Jim

This whole process is not new. It has been in the tech manual for ages. It just has never had a Tech Manager ensuring the Tech Manual is followed as per their employment requirement. As an active restricted L2 I can personally say I have seen work performed by other L2's that has far from impressed me. I have been involved in several repairs as the second person and there is nothing worse! I have met some members with a 'I'll give it a go" attitude. Thats ok for working on a go-kart but a plane!
In the past Courts of Law have also questioned the maintenance practices of RAAus. I anticipate we will have between 4-6 Coronial enquiries in the next 2 years looking at all aspects of RAAus, including maintenance. If any of those enquiries lay blame on RAAus then a civil matter seeking compensation is likely to follow. If hypothetically that civil matter is successful and there was a finding in relation to L2 maintenance failure, then upon further discovery it is shown that RAAus does not even follow its own rules ie tech manual then that could very well be the end of our great organisation. We have improved dramatically in the last 12 months, we need to continue down that road. Sometimes a little pain now is better than a lot forced on you later on.
As to the L2 I have been told there are about 900 on the books. However when you try to find them they are scarce. Many I believe have been on the books from the two stroke days, all you needed was two buddies to sign you are awsome and L2 you become. In my view it makes sense to establish exactly who out there is skilled and available to perform the duties. I would like to see those who really want to perform the work have the opportunity to improve such as running Jab and Rotex courses for the active L2's.
As stated the above is MY view. Look forward to hearing more. There is nothing sinister going on, were just trying to get things running as they were designed to run.

Jim Tatlock

Have you had CAO 100.5 done to check instruments? Cheap instruments can have lots of variance at different alititudes. I know a guy with a similar name to me that hangs out at YLED that can do that stuff for you.

I'm hearing you, send me an email detailing your aircraft and the school aircraft and ill look into it.The aircraft being discussed here had the "Database Details for Aircraft" form fully completed when the renewal was submitted, including both changes to incorrect info in contradiction with the info supplied at the time of initial registration last year, and filling in blanks where the info was also provided at initial rego.Although not requested, photos of all rego markings and correct placarding were also supplied with the renewal in an attempt to prevent delays in case the photos supplied last year had been misplaced.Jim.

Stearman,Maj, it was the tech staff who said they are running at 5 weeks. I don't doubt Darren is working hard to better this, but if they are running at a 5 week turnaround the renewal paperwork should be sent out 6 weeks before expiry not 4 as seems to the case at the moment. With less notice than the lead time every aircraft will spend some time grounded.I know of one case where a single aircraft school is now unable to operate due to rego delays. This particular aircraft was only first registered 1 year ago ( ie after the problems came to light and the auditing began ) so delays due auditing were not expected. The office was made aware a week before expiry of the circumstances of the school but it made no difference, rego expired and now a dozen students will miss flying this weekend. It is not a good thing to have to explain to these new members of our organisation why they are suffering this disruption to their training.Your comments are confusing, I do however feel your pain. Can you please send me an email with more detail and I will discuss your case when in Canberra early next week and call you back. Also the details of the school as they have priority as per a previous resolution I put up.
I look forward to getting more info and resolving this issue. Email [email protected]

Jim Tatlock.

Yup, I can recall they sucessfully got a conviction on a few petrol stations in Bendigo 10 years ago. One of the cashiers turned states evidence.JimAs a general rule you are correct they are essentially a toothless tiger but we may not be big enough to ward off their attempts.JT

Cost of Magazine per member - It is the biggest individual cost.Keith, see my post on the GM resigns thread. His job is described in the Ops Manual and in his position description. His job is way bigger than making sure the bills are paid and the filing done. About $100,000 more. https://www.raa.asn.au/2014/05/position-vacant-general-manager/ If you know someone who is adept at nailing jelly to a tree; get them to apply. No one has said the paper magazine will be abolished. But members saying "Save the printing and postage - I'll read it on-line - thanks." will save RAA money and might save putting up memberships when postage goes up. Last year RAA spent $327,133 on the magazine and I am not sure how much of the $48,567 postage was the magazine. That's over $32 per member.
SAAA - RAA already has a Memorandum of Understanding agreement with them (and they with us) from 2009, signed by Eugene Reid & others. You should read it - RAA, Members Only Portal, Partnerships, SAAA MoU. A straw poll costs nothing, but a formal vote (with reply paid envelopes, postage to our 10,000 members, staff resources to print, collate, etc) well, that costs Tens of Thousands. That should only be done when the concept is mature. Would you have been happier if one of the Board members had asked the same questions?
One downside to amalgamating AOPA, RAA & SAAA (and other RAOs) is that people like me are members of several. At present RAA can say "We represent 10,000, AOPA 7,000 etc, but once amalgamated I would only be counted once. The new body would have less members than the sum of the previous parts. Politicians take note of numbers. That aside, there are a lot of good reasons to co-operate and find savings where we can.

The Straw Poll being refered to was initiated by Rod Birrel from my recollection when he began to discuss issues at the GM's presentation. The concept was in relation to having the option of electronic magazine. The GM may have then polled the members on other issues but I cannot comment as I had other duties I had to attend to.Hello SueAs I see it, I have a big problem with the GM calling the straw poll, is the duty of the board. The GM is in the office getting it to run smoothly and mentoring staff etc. etc.. I can here you say he was asked to do that task OK that would be a "Oi! Your job you need the information first hand."The board members need ideas to help to form direction hence my reason for thinking on those lines.
Magazine online is good however about the people without computers and the number of times we take the mag to work to read and share with friends.
With the SAAA there is some work to done, however a vote from membership and that is from both groups would form a good guide here.
Regards
Keith Page.

I don't think conducting a poll online would necesarily give us an accurate representation of membership. I'd love to be proved wrong on this point.Another great reason to move online with a proper members section, so such online votes could be conducted with ease, and policy and ideas could be discussed in a forum like portal with the members.Jim Tatlock.

Well done Andy. We need members like yourself putting hands up and running for the board. I know you have the support of the Executive and I personally believe you would be an asset if elected. For those who read these forums I can tell you Andy has always been available to assist the board whenever requested. He has regularly contacted me to keep informed as to progress and given guidance and advice if I requested some. Good luck.I have nominated for the upcoming board elections for the NSW positions. Those that have been here for a while will know that I have been critical of past RAAus board members and so its only fair that I offer an alternate. I was prepared to nominate last time but rather than do so I chose to get behind Michael Monk and work towards his election for the one spot that there was last year. I personally believe that today RAAus is a better organisation than it was 18 months ago, but the improvements still leave a vast area remaining for additional improvements.I thought the provision of resolutions and outcomes from the Temora board meeting was fantastic, showing who proposed, who seconded who abstained and result. However if we can do that for those resolutions why not all the other day to day resolutions within the board forum, which is visible only to those that are on the board? There will obviously some for various reasons that cant be reported on, but as long as the categories and determination of which resolutions are not reported on are agreed in advance by category then I can see no reason to not have that extra openness. If on reflection the legal advisors to RAAus say we should not, then lets discuss and advise members of that determination....So, as other has said "put up...or shut up!" so I've put up which to me allows me to continue discussing the organisation we are all part of.

Kaz, The oil and gas industry are doing this at the moment. It's an agreement for a period of time that they will not poach each others employees (an attempt to control wages and manning). I have heard of it but never seen it written. Colusion at its best if it is truly happening. Also, I'm confused. Is it an employment contract...ie an agreement between the employer and employee? Or is it an agreement between 2 employers? If the latter, it seems unusual but I have no idea if it is lawful. These things usually don't become an issue until an employee has left his employer and is attempting to find alternate work..then all hell breaks loose and there are threats of litigation and even writs flying around.
