1. I dunno how you keep up with all this, Willy - but your efforts are genuinely appreciated, keeping others like myself in touch with the outside world...

Just outside Mallala township to the north of Adelaide - we not infrequently go there in order to either spectate or act as volunteers at motor sport events at what used to be the RAAF establishment there - is a beautifully maintained war graves cemetery which ever so poignantly has graves in it of those who never made it past their training for WW2 ... they didn't even get a chance to fire a single shot in defence of our homeland. So many sacrifices - even before departing one's home soil.

  2. Yes, what a great experience for the lucky bugger ...

Here's an image I downloaded years ago - apparently shot somewhere near Christmas Island (in the Pacific), and it looks to be just a tad chilly outside!

  3. Great! And dont'ya just love the Flight Engineer's comment of "..it was like a flying simulator" , referring to the number of in-flight engine "events" he experienced in the type.

  4. What a great Blog!

Beautifully and so entertainingly written - and any Yank who can write "...The officers of the 93rd thought that L-4s were “vehicles,” with the accent on the first syllable..." is simply wonderful!

  5. Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantom re-fuelling from a Hercules. The camera captures the Il-76 AWACS in the background, going down after a mid-air collision with a fighter jet. It was during an air show a couple of years ago.

Makes one think that air shows might be more dangerous than combat! (I'm thinking of Ramstein here...)

  6. Hi Willie ... yep, that's the one. Can't explain auto-play failure - IT stuff definitely not my strong suit.

I'l toss this one in even if it's off-topic: found it on the web a couple of days ago and ... naturally you came to mind!

  7. It's hardly recent, but during my time spent on Nauru - 1973 to 1975, there was a 3 aircraft formation fly past/around the island to celebrate the arrival of their newly acquired Boeing 727, flanked by the "junior partners", a pair of Fokker F100's, C2 RN-1 & C2 RN-2. I have no idea of the legality of the formation flight, but it was a very memorable sight indeed.

And sorry .. I have no photo to post. BUGGER!

  8. Schoolkids riding pushbikes to school each day. These times there's so much traffic on the roads it's only those kids whose parents want to lose - forever - their chidren, who are seen on a bike.:p

Crikey, Red .. you've certainly started something here!
