  1. Looking for any WA Pilots that may be interested in joining our little facebook community, the idea is to be able to organise social events and meet new pilots in the area. It's Perth Pilots, just search it on facebook.I hope it's okay to post this, mods feel free to delete if it's inappropriate!

Yahoo.at last, count me in :-)

  2. Hi Mate,

I did a PPL some time ago at Jandakot and have now transferred to and bought my own Microlight. I'm happy to have a chat if you you want to call (i'll PM you my number) it'll just be far easier than rattling it all into a long winded text, and also I can ask you some questions about what you want out of it, if that helps.

  3. Turf wars and Empire builders are plentiful as well as loyalties to a group or brand. Difficult to change. BUT as they say IF we don't hang together we will surely hang separately. Nev

LOL. yes, so so true. I am very much a black and white analytical type of person so the whole RaAus/HGFA thing does my head in when it comes to WM.... anyway, I'm learning to let it flow over me, woooooshaaaaaa, woooosshaaaaa. :-)

  4. Well for what its worth I transferred from PPL GA to WM (Weightshift Microlight) RPC or RPL or whatever it is with HGFA and I'm even more confused and dumbfounded these days by the whole Licence/Certificate thing but even more so the whole allowed/not allowed crossover between RaAus and HGFA both of which fly WM ?

Example is, it appears that an I can complete my BFR with and RaAus Instructor and submit it to HGFA but I cant have said RaAus member complete my Biannual Maintenance Inspection, that MUST be completed by an HGFA Rotax Approved Person, which I am, but I cant do my own as it needs to be someone independent ?? WTF :-)

  5. Wow - you're flying over one big emergency landing field. Must be relaxing. Not many flat fields round my way. . .Great vid!

LOL, thank Soleair, yes it is quietly comforting to fly along picking out the best looking ones in case of an emergency, just about anywhere would do if the need arose. Not too much of that in the Blue Mountains eh :-)

  6. Great vid Dinga...looks like a top spot! Was hoping to get up there this weekend but the weather isnt looking all that great for camping

Its certainly top priority for us now though...just gotta break it to my wife that its not only a good camping spot....she hasnt been told about the runways/hangars/aircraft yet!

Don't tell her Mike, just practice your surprised look for when you pull into the park :-)

  7. Hi to another West Aussie :)If any of you are down Bunbury way anytime please holla ... the Big Breakfast fly-ins on the first Sunday of each month tend to draw a few folk from the big smoke :)

    Cheers

    Repa

Sounds great, definitely will. Hopefully fly down in something. My trike would need to refuel along the way :-) otherwise I'd do it.

  8. Thanks RepaThanks for the west aussie welcome ;)

I occasionally get down Bunbury way so will keep in touch.

Maybe a few of us big smoke based pilots can arrange a bit of a ride share and head down for the day...I'd be happy to get us a 4 seater and head down from Jandakot if anyone is keen.

    Mike

Keen! as mustard, count me in, it'd be like the old days, Hit up Min for a Warrior......

  9. Nice. I too did my PPL with Min I was pretty much about her second Licence when she started I had been flying with Phoenix prior to that and in Carnarvon prior to that.

I was using Lake Clifton for a little while but now hanger the Trike at White Gum Farm York, they have a great facility for RA, accommodation, camp kitchen etc and now the White Gum Airpark is taking shape. They have plenty of runways but 09 is great and suitable for most ac.

Yes, Microlights certainly get the wind in your hair (so to speak) and is lots of fun (most of the time).

Keep in touch, would be good to catch up sometime, the social flying scene needs work here.

    Cheers

    Craig

  10. For what its worth I'll have my say.

I love this site, and I love reading the input across the varied Geographic locations all in the one place.

One thing I am confused about is that I see plenty of mention throughout the site and this post with regards to RAAus but I am right in thinking that this site is an independent site right? And yet I never see any mention of the likes of say HGFA who have a larger Microlight membership than RAAus.

Anyway, enough said, change will happen regardless so no point in me spending hours getting hot under the collar about changes that I don't agree with, when its all done and dusted I will re-appraise and if it loses its appeal then I'll just stop visiting.

Thanks for the great site to date.

  11. ATSB has legal protection in publicly declaring the facts and theory on what they found, but generally don't investigate RAA fatalities/injuries, although they do investigate those they choose. Having ATSB investigate all RAA crashes, or at least fatalities would be the best outcome, but cost appears to be the barrier.Where ATSB don't investigate, State Police investigate, but that investigation is to prepare a brief for the State Coroner, who is looking for a cause of death, as against a cause of the accident, which we want. Police do not release their briefs, so we only get some answers and only after, sometimes years.

RAA provide assistance to State Police, and are bound by the Police policy, so we can't get accurate details from the members association.

In recent times RAA have provided oblique advice, with the intention of saving lives, and while that is very much appreciated by all of us, it's not without it's risk for the members because they and the association do not have the same immunity as ATSB. For that reason RAA can't just release sensitive information shortly after each crash, thus identifying the participants.

Hi Turboplanner and thanks because you have filled in the blanks for me. It seems to me that this is not necessarily working all that well and we could actually avoid some of the future incidents and accidents if we had better effective and open reporting.

  12. Thanks for sharing gandalph. IMHO I feel that there is not enough post accident communications regardless of whether it is an RAA or HGFA issue. I am not suggesting speculative statements but I for one as a newcomer to WM would certainly like to hear more detail because accident reporting as you pointed out may assist us in the future from becoming such a statistic. It works well in GA I just don't seem to see the same level of open reporting in RA.

I am would be more than happy if someone can enlighten me otherwise but following such incidents and certainly as time goes by (and thorough investigation takes time) we seem to lose track of the outcomes.

  13. What I meant is that the streakIII wing has little static stability. The force required to move the wing from any position is very low and the wing has very little force moving it back to the balanced state ... its a wing that is easy to fly because it has little for to overcome BUT it has weak return to centre - compare it with something from the early wings and the force to move the wing from trim was high and it returned to trim as soon as you release the wing. The reason it is an easy wing to get into trouble with is that as well as the low force to move the wing its fast ... and the faster wings run a lower angle of attack than slower wings ... and its possible when flying fast and throwing a wing to get to neg incidence. Plus the streak III wing I flew would drop either wing very easily and very strongly at the stall even when entered from straight and level and with slow deceleration ...

if you are throwing a streak III around down near the ground chasing a good film shot I can easily imagine it getting pulled around too slow and stalling in the turn and ending badly. Not saying this is what happened - the same result could be imagined if you are slowing down in a turn in the circuit and got hit by a willy willy ... again not saying this happened but with a high performance wing with low force and low static stability you just have to be very aware of whats happening.

Nice, thanks for clarifying Kasper and that really does confirm what I have experienced with my Streak I. Like I said previously its a learning experience and I like to hear from those with something to offer. 072_teacher.gif.7912536ad0b89695f6408008328df571.gif

  14. Way out west, no way it's just that some of us are way out east.Good to have you on the forum.

    Alan Marriette (Adelaide Central.)

    Hi Alan,

was out your way some weeks back flying with Larry at Strath, great place. Def plan to return.

  15. Hi Craig ,I tried to get in contact with Brendan , when I was debating Flex or Fixed Wing , with no success . So I'm guessing he gave it away :(

Nice to know there is a few WA boys around here :)

    Cheers

Yes, Troy last time I spoke to him he was wrapping things up just wasn't sure that he had yet, yes shame as it leaves us with really only York (RAA) or Exmouth (HGFA) as far as I can see, I went the other way from fixed wing to flex.

  16. Firstly condolences to the family and friends of the deceasedI flew Airborne Wizard, Streak 1, Streak 2, 2B Streak 3 & a SST wings

Wizard- hated it, smacked around by turbulence, speed wobbles over 45kts when tucking the bar in to lose height

Streak 1 wing- nice wing overall with inflight trim but slow (50kts)

Streak 2 nice all round wing overall with inflight trim (54kts)

Streak 2B nice wing overall with no inflight adjustable trim and set reflex (54 kts)

Streak 3 - loved it quite stable pin point your landings and reasonable speed (60-61kts hands off)

SST- overrated, claimed 70kts trim which the best I saw was 67kts but sat right wing low when in the front hole, middle hole (62kts) was much better, nice in turbulence as it was always in compression being strutted but could Dutch roll (side slip) really easy if you changed direction really quickly which was a horrible feeling as you basically felt like you flew side ways with what felt like minimal control and had to roll towards the skid to get it to basically hook up

Did it twice, first time during a S turn and second time just after it to see if it was just a 1 off

    Never did it again

From what I have heard the Arrow is a SST basically with a meter off the wingspan which helped the handing some what I am told

Overall I did about 760 hrs combined with Airborne wings mostly on the 1, 3 & SST

Never had any issues other than the SST those 2 times

    Hi Alf,

Amazing and thanks for sharing, I have flown Wizard, Streak 1 (that I own) and Cruz but am very low hrs, great to hear comments from long termers like yourself, cheers.

  17. Hi Troy,

It's always a little exciting when another flying enthusiast pops his head up over here. Good luck with the flying keep in touch and hope to catch up one day.

ps: Is Brendan still at Bunbury or did he give it away with the Microlights?

    Craig
