  1. The slang term used in Australia is "dry as a nun's nipple". Not sure what tight means in this context.

Actually, its dry as a nuns nasty, and its from the 12th man (cricket comedy). One of the pakistan(IIRC) players name was '‘Drias Anunsnasti'. 12th man is old now, but its still a classic.

  2. Not quite, for the Nav Endorsement you require 2hours IF time (which you can't do under RA-AUS) and for the Radio Endorsement you need English Proficiency Level 4 (which you don't have from your RA-AUS radio endorsement). However you don't need either these endorsements to get the RPL converted and could get them signed off during the Flight Review.

Probably cant get your IF signed off in a flight review, unless you want to go up for 3 hours! I had English Proficiency Level 4 signed of as part of my RPL flight test..

  3. Seriously Daz, Some body needs to fire you from you're gramma Nazi position before you loose you're color and go insane. I think your to in need of a good vacation, have you done the Kakoda trail?

This made me laugh hard. Love the grammar nazi's, find them everywhere. I seem to cop a right flogging. As an engineer I have a reputation to uphold.

Wasn't intended to Daz! Clearly a wind up............ Hence the other eleventeen mistakes.

Even I picked up on more than one mistake!!

WRT. to Part 61 changes, I started my training under the old rules. Best part for me as an RPL means I have a proper licence. Under the old GFPT I would have been unable to sign the maintenance release and would have needed a check flight every 15 hours. Bonus is now I can private hire which runs on tacho time rather than VDO time.

Apparently you can convert from RA-Aus licence to a RPL with a check flight and CASA paperwork. I assume all endorsements and class ratings come across with it.

  4. WRT to pax weight, I notice a lot of websites like redballon etc. put a limit on max pax weight for joy flights, usually 100kg depending on aircraft.

I was personally looking at fuel injected lyco 182, post 200o model. My main interest is touring however. Still a couple of years away before I decided, will fly the club 182 for a while first and then decided.

  5. Well Done Mate!!Just out of interest how many hours does it take to convert from RA-Aus - RPL?

    Cam

I never did the RA-Aus thing. Long story, but I knew nothing about RA-Aus.

    The whole journey started because

    a) I am a motorcycle rider and I had massive trail bike crash which resulted in a broken leg/knee. As a result of the injury I could not ride trail, nor could I pursue my other sport which is sailing. I was also a runner, and with a broken leg and knee that sport was over for good. I am fairly active so I needed another challenge.

    b) I am a long time aviation nut. I am not a plane spotter, but I have spent many hours at YBBN, YCAB, YRED etc watching aircraft. Also have a morbid fascination with the SR-71.

    c) I am scared of flying, and need to get over it.

I was bored one day, post op and not walking real well when I took a drive to YRED. Decided to walk in an ask about learning to fly, walked out with a booking for a Trial Flight. I was nervous as hell, but once in the air and using the controls I realised I enjoyed it. It was probably 6 months later before I was fit enough to attempt to start training.

Given the fact that I am older (40), I am scared of flying and halfway through my training I hit a kangaroo on my road bike which resulted in a fractured ankle and gave me another 8 month break (pun intended). It has taken me nearly 50 hours dual and about 15 hours solo. In saying that, I racked up probably 5 hours dual and 10 hours solo in the 2 weeks prior to my flight test but post my instructors recommendation to the CFI to do the flight test. I knew I was ready for the flight test, but I just lacked the confidence. In reality, the hours I have flown would have most people a PPL.

In lieu of my lack of knowledge of RA-Aus, and my new-found knowledge of aviation and aviation training I would not change a thing. I am of the opinion that the training offered by Redcliffe Aero Club is of a very high standard. In saying that, I am convinced that RA-Aus is the lifeblood of recreational aviation and without it I honestly dont think there would be much recreational flying at all. I intend to buy a plane at some point, and there is several LSA in that list ( including sea planes!!!).

So, I suggest analysing what sort of flying you do before upgrading. Dont abandon RA-Aus because we need them to keep rec flying alive (and join AOPA too). I am not a member of RA-Aus, but I fully intend to join up very soon.

    Cheers, Andy.

  6. out of interest - were you asked to fly with reference to any navaid,(particularly GPS) in the aircraft, either as an aid to your normal VFR flying, or, while you were IF under-the-hood? And, well done to achieve it all on glass instead of analog. happy days,

Just under the hood. The whole idea being at RPL/PPL level you have enough IF skill for you to perform a 180 out of cloud should you inadvertently end up in that situation.

I am intending on doing an IFR rating at some point though. Giving some serious thought to actually doing my CPL as well.

  7. Did it in a g1000 cockpit and had no idea that I would have to do instrument flight. Realised I have no idea how to do a rate one turn in the glass cockpit because all my IF hours were in steam gauge cockpits.

Obviously didn't go to badly though, because I passed.

Start my PPL navs after easter because I am on call now. Will give me some time to knock out the PPL theory exam I guess.

  8. Airport Operators requirement - I can only guess because of wind shear at times - it is not extreme but can be a handful at times, particularly for someone with little island type landings.

Sounds like YRED to me!! We always have gusting crosswinds, especially at this time of year.

  9. I'm moving to Brisbane in the next few months and will also be looking at securing a regular flying machine. Is there anything like MAG or BFG in Redcliffe or Caboolture? Either VH or RA-AUS registered?

I have no idea what MAG or BFG is sorry. Redcliffe is mainly all VH Cessna's, but there are a few others. RA-AUS stuff is more common at Caboolture.

PearoJust be mindful if you are planning Shute Harbour in the Witsundays (nice place) with a new licence, they require prior permission and 100hrs command time. I am sure you would check the ERSA anyway.

I am a while off doing anything like that!! I plan to do NVFR and PIFR ratings before I start venturing wide. I will probably look at getting a CSU endorsement as well as the club has an excellent g1000 Cessna 182.

  10. Hi,

I am currently in training at YRED for my PPL. Should be done by now but a kangaroo decided to jump out in front of me on the highway when I was was riding my motorcycle and delayed my training by 8 months.

Currently doing area solo's and pretty close to getting my RPL (former GFPT). Starting the Bob Tait PPL course next week, then hopefully do my PPL navs full time in Feb. Feb is going to be an expensive month!!

Not sure what I will do with the PPL just yet, but there is a couple of places I want to fly too, one being the fringes of the simpson desert and the other being the whitsundays. I am throwing around the idea of purchasing an aircraft, but the plan at this point is just to hire for a year or so to see what sort of flying I do.

Other interests are sailing. I do a fair bit of racing, that is when my boat (22' catamaran) is not broken!

    Cheers,

    Andy.
