  1. Saturday morning I got up early, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to hook the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph.. I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad throughout the day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, 'The weather out there is terrible.' My loving wife of 20 years replied, 'Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that s@#%' I still don't know to this day if she was joking, but I've stopped fishing.
  2. Guy,s I hope I,m not speaking out of turn here as I am a man of little flying experience however I feel a need to put my point of view on this thread. Do we as fellow fliers think it is fair to put on public display and to debate an instructors methods and inputs into a student's progress in learning to fly. Can we begin to imagine how the instructor must feel (if he is aware of the thread) knowing that his every word and method of training is up for debate in the public arena . I would not be surprised, if the instructor doe's become aware of the thread ,that he may refuse to continue the training as continuing would be placing tremendous pressure on himself to make sure that any instruction given and any words spoken are not misconstrued and published on the thread. There I've said my piece and got it off my chest. Cheers Ken

    High speed shimmy

Hi JR I have a Savannah that vibrates through the rudder pedals on liftoff and could not work it out , however the guys at the strip where I fly from say that it is the nose wheel being out of balance. That makes a lot of sense to me and is the next job I will tackle Regards Ken
  4. Yes I know Ian but I didn't know where else to post it. It should make people feel good and smile. Cheers Ken
  5. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two glasses of wine from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. 'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided,'I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life.' 'The golf balls are the important things; your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favourite passions; things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.' 'The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else; the small stuff' 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.' 'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. Do one more run down the ski slope. There will always be time to clean the house . Take care of the golf balls first; the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.' One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the wine represented. The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of glasses of wine with a friend. Share this with friends. I just did.
  6. John is in Napal for another 3 weeks
  7. A plane passed through a severe storm. The turbulence was awful, and things went from bad to worse when one wing was struck by lightning. One woman lost it completely. She stood up in the front of the plane and screamed, 'I'm too young to die,' she cried. Then she yelled, 'If I'm going to die, I want my last minutes on earth to be memorable! Is there anyone on this plane who can make me feel like a WOMAN?' For a moment, there was silence. Everyone stared at the desperate woman in the front of the plane. Then the man from Australia stood up in the rear of the plane. He was handsome, tall, well built, with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. Slowly, he started to walk up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt as he went, one button at a time. No one moved. He removed his shirt. Muscles rippled across his chest. She gasped... Then, he spoke... 'Iron this -- and then get me a beer.'
  8. Hi Doug I checked out Roland on Google earth it appears to be in a nice valley with a rather large waterway next to it. Is it as flat as it looks looking down from Google earth? Also noticed a big power line going through the place. Does that interfere much with your flying? Cheers Ken
  9. Hi Mark I am going to see my Savy tomorrow it has been inspected for transfer however there are a few things to be tidied up before it can be transferred it's a two hour drive from home to Cominya until I can get it to Kilcoy, You mentioned bike peoples and plane people being liked minded well as it happens I am an old dirt bile racer from way back so it must be true, Cheers Ken
  10. Hi Mark Where is lake Cooper/ Cheers Ken
  11. Gday Daniel  welcome I think you will enjoy the forum as there is plenty of opportunity to discuss anything to do with aviation and you will usually find someone can answer your questions if you have any I'm fairly new myself and have just taken possession of a Savannah (not new) and have done 17 hours under instruction and the last six minutes ( 1 circuit) solo .in a Technam Echo. I'm hoping one day to fly to Tassie and visit my brother and his wife who live in Launceston I don't know how far that is from where your farm is located, I also have friends in Bernie Cheers Ken
  12. Congratulations Mark must be a real buzz to build and fly your own plane it looks great . I hope to be flying mine soon too as I did my first solo on Friday. Cheers Ken
  13. Hi Keith I had my phone call returned saying that the unit had been sold. Thanks for the info anyway Cheers Ken
  14. His request approved, the Fox News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go.' The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.' 'Why?' asked the pilot. 'Because I'm a photographer for Fox Cable News,' he responded. 'And I need to get some close up shots.' The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me, is . .... you're NOT my flight instructor?'
  15. Thanks Keith I have just rang him and left a massage I'll let you know how I get on Regards Ken
  16. Gday Mark The hangar is at Coominya Flight School CFI John Walmsley that's where the Savannah has been for quite a while, the photo shows half the hangar and there is 5 aircraft sharing it . The only downside is that it is a 2 hour drive from home whereas Kilcoy is 45 minutes. There is a possibility I may be able to park it at a local private strip only 2 minutes from home but will have to have my STOL skills up and running before then. I plan to do both short and long trips once I have the necessary nav skills and that is what excites me the most dropping in to visit other clubs, family, flyins ect. or just taking in the sites en route. This is all new to me and very exciting Cheers Ken
  17. Thanks JayKay and Andy Its nice to get info from pilots who have used these GPSs and not have some young lad in a shop try to explain their various pros and cons now I can base my decision on hard facts. I like the idea of loading all of the Ausie airstrips at once which would mean getting the 296 , I have already got the download for the airstrips Thanks again Cheers Ken
  18. Hi Guys Thanks for all the info, theres lots of possibilities to sift through and it seems that the Garmin 296 is the most popular of the portable GPSs . Does the 196 at about $500 less have any merit against the 296 and just to throw another hat into the ring does anyone have any experience with the Lawrence airmap 1000. also the small netpad seems to have some merit except for fixing it in the cockpit. I have an old garmin marine GPS that has no aviation features at all but I can still put way points into it and it can still get you to a pre entered latitude and longitude I was thinking of using this as a backup.any thoughts on this? Cheers Ken
  19. Thanks Glen We have one of those Office supply stores here in Caboolture so I will go and check out the Acer There. Cheers Ken
  20. Hi After talking with another Savannah owner I am encouraged to post a picture of my new Savannah. Today I became the proud owner of an almost new Savannah , well it's a couple of years old, however it has only flown 40 odd hours , it still has slats on it and is powered by Rotax 912s . All I have to do now is complete my flying lessons. The plane is based at Coominya at the moment but I hope to be flying out of Kilcoy (Qld) once I have done my cross country. I am looking forward to flying in my own plane and meeting with like minded folks. Regards Ken
  21. Hi Andy and Scott I have been thinking about doing the same trip only from Narromine to adelaide Im thinking of perhaps going to the Flyin at Narromine from Kilcoy in Queensland and then continuing on to Adelaide as we have rellies in the Port, bearing in mind I am only up to doing circuits in my training , about 12 hours up so far however having said that I paid the balance off of my brand new second hand Savannah today and I cant wait to finish my training and get to fly it to all the wonderful places in our country Ken
  22. Thanks Andy also on Ebay there is a little 7" PC which would be a good size for the cockpit it has no hard drive but has 4 gig solid state storage it runs LINEX also there is a 9" version that I think can run windows they are priced around 300 to 400 dollars do you think one of these would be suitable? Ken
  23. Hi can anybody tell me anything about the Garmin 295 . There is a couple on Ebay in the US, can they be loaded with Ausie data and are they worthwhile or should I be looking at the 296 or 196 or the 96 here in Aus Ken
  24. 701/savannah Thanks Frank From what I can gather the Savannah is supposed to be a clone of the 701 with a few mods ie slightly longer wing span ,9 meters and they have solved the rattles by putting longitudinal folded creases in the fuselage to make them a little more ridged , there are probably a lot more changes that I will become familiar with once I gain some experience The planes look pretty much the same other than that. Mine is powered by the Rotax 912S Regards Ken
  25. Savannah  Thanks for the welcome guys its taken me a while to get back to you. Frank I thought about building the Savannah and may still do later on, however one came up for sale so I reckon I can have some fun flying first ( once I learn that is) and then maybe later I will build one . What are your thoughts on the Savannah ? Regards Ken
