1. Cant think of too many benifits, other than you need it to fly lsa. Its gob smacking the lack of support in areas where the membership need advocacy .

Eg finding and calling out companies that price gouge on aircraft and engine spare parts .

As the peak body they can have influence but they do not use it to assist those that support them!

2. The word “ member “ is redundant in RAAUS.  We are now just milking cows , there to provide the funding  for corporate  operations.

Major decisions are made without membership consultation.  They want to be seen a big players in the game , so lets cosy up with the big boys. Give them what they want , as long as we have a seat at the table.

I feel the board and management are overstepping the mark with their decision to release private information to airports.  By the way i pay landing fees. Its the way the board operates that has me concerned.  There is no consultation with us cows!

3. Hi Rob. In effect you have built a faraday cage from your engine bay.  Faraday cages are used by scientists and technicians to isolate radio signals .    You have proven that your issue starts at your aerial and coaxial cable ,   It is receiving the hash generated by the engine systems..

static and noise that enters through the aerial usualy points to a poorly installed aerial.

its the opposite of what you might expect, a good installation allows the front end amplifiers in your radio to automatically winde back their sensitivity.    This iimproves the signal to noise ratio so that when a voice communication comes in it swamps the engine noise.

a poor antenna and coax does the opposite  it causes the amplifiers to crank up, and  amplify the much weaker engine noise signals.

. so as you say you have cured the symtoms  but have not gotten to the root cause .

the spray ( paint you used)  is normally finely ground metal particles suspended in a  laquer or similar.  It can be very effective . It will be interesting to see how well it sticks after a few months of heating and cooling.

i have used it in marine applications to stop radar signals from entering equipment sensors on ships , but these were free of vibration and large temperature changes. . Hope it continues to work but be prepared to touch up sometimes.

at least now you can fly in peace lol..  but look more closely at the aerial install. Particulary is the coax shield grounded to a aluminium ground plane under the base of the aerial.

4. Uncle Bob, attacking one of the school aircraft. . .with yours truly assistingting the operation. ( I've done this before, it helps to know where the feed is ) I bet him 5 Pints of best bitter that the problem was a leak in the pitot feed. ASI was sluggish and under-reading by 20 plus Kt in the cruise ( checked against GPS in nil wind condx. ) rough guide anyway. . .

Found a 50mm split in the feed tube. . . .Just removing the fairing to get at it.

Looks like a good FREE session at the pub next weekend. . all the other experts said that it was partially blocked by dust or an insect. . . ( lucky guess really ! ) All good banter though.

I had a split in a nylon tee piece that fed air from the pitot to the ASI and airswitch. Same symtoms under reading , slow to move of the zero. Tecnam sierra easy to get at though.
5. Funny thing I have a Jab 2200 and it is just about radio silent. Not by my good design, because I know little. Are the P leads shielded? Also have you checked all your earth connections, just give them a twist and they should change if there is any problem.

Rf interferance is crazy, 2 identical installations can give one perfect radio and the other a dud! All your points made are very valid.
6. Hi my name is Rob and this is my first post and hoping someone can help as I am at my wits end trying to solve this problem.I have a clicking noise on my Trig radio, the remote sender is behind the rear seat, it is rev related and will increase with rpm, I have renewed rotor arms and plug leads, it is much worse on left mag but sometimes will change to both when flying, all wires are screened.I used hand held radio inside the plane and could still hear the noise and so its not wiring to headsets, any help would be much apreciated.

Fibre glass! Causes more problems with radios than enough! Call me crazy.!! All 1/4 wave aerials as used on our 120mHz radios require a ground plane to replace the missing 1/4 wave of the aerial. If thes aerials do not have a good ground plane the front end of the radio will increase its gain and become susceptible to interferance . Fibre glass motor homes can suffer from a similar issue with receiving broadcast band signals when signals are weak .No radio issues are easily solved via a forum. But by ensuring that your aerial is correctly terminated into a ground plane and that your coax cable is good quality , with its screen electrically bonded (attached ) to the ground plane is a start.

So google ground planes and 1/4 wave aerials and check yours out.

You can make a simple ground plane from thin alum sheet. This may not be a fix but most rf noise enters via the antenna so make sure the aerial is installed correctly.

7. One solution is to put your leds in series and raise the supply voltage by using a current limited boost converter.

The duty cycle will be short, remember that the retentivity of the eye is quite long . Which means short very bright pulses are easily seen.

Take a look at this design LED Lighting - Experimental Avionics Its not dissimilar to yours but it does use a ready made boost converter. Strobe controlers are prone to causing rf noise led units are better but still screen it and locate it carefully . Also use a rf choke capable of carrying the lamp load at the controllers power inlet.. have fun....

8. Placing my head into the lions mouth here.

But shouldnt you be getting your weather whilst on the ground. During your flight planning ? If i were flying to somplace and using for example the weather radar overlay to dodge around thunderstorms then seems to me that the conditions are getting close to IMC.

Oz runways is a electronic planning tool and paperless maps etc .

Anyway i use a mini 2 in a ram mount in front of a air vent , being on power helps to keep it cool as well and a Aldi sim card seems to work fine . i know this ony because the tracking features work reliably via the Cellular connection .

9. I proudly have a distant family member (AKA Rocket Scientist) that works for SpaceX. Elon also had him on the team doing the initial technical proposal for the “hyperlink” ultra high speed passenger transporter from LA to San Fran (approx. 90 minutes, I think). One of the major limitations to the hyperlink proposal wasn’t technical, but more about the maximum g force a typical passenger would tolerate as a paying passenger. That lead to a need for wide radius corners covering lots of real estate, so that pushes up costs for either land acquisition, or extensive tunneling.

My family member says Elon is both inspiring and terrifying all at the same time, as he isn’t afraid to throw down ambitious engineering challenges at short notice, expect results, but embrace “constructive” failure. He is truly an inspiring entrepreneur from direct evidence.

Terrible public speaker though. I Fell asleep watching his annual speech ( youtube ) topic was great delivery ... boring )

10. Yes Marty. You nailed it.It's just a sales gimmick.

Yep a gimmick , but they need to load the thing with somthing!

Another thought.......... maybe its not a car at all. But a cunningly disguised secret death ray machine! .

Clever very clever , no one would ever guess!

11. lightwing yes. Gazell has been approved for bolly and tecnam is on the way , but expect 12 months wait.!

The other question about marap is the fee structure. I cannot find out how this operates . For example if a marap is approved for a particular aircraft ie by its rego number. And the owner pays the fee. Plus cost of engineering, does that owner get a refund later when that marap approval is aplied to a second or third aircraft.

Come on Raaus be up front, publish the fee and cost structure and tell us how it works in terms of costs. I understand that variouse maraps will have different actual costs to do testing, but how does it work!

12. Ok all youse Lightwing lovers. I got a problem with RAA. I am trying to re register my GA912. It is fitted with a Bolly Optima two blade prop. It was fitted by ALW and Howie claimed that it was approved. Of course there was no written approval. The problem is that Darren (tech mgr) wants a thousand dollars to consider my MARAP application. More recently Nick assured me (verbally) that somebody had recently got a MARAP through for Bolly prop on a Lightwing. He said it was achieved along with MARAP approval for retrofitting Fowler flaps to that aircraft.Does anybody know if a MARAP has been done for alternate propellors on any Lightwing? Reference to one could save me a lot of money.

Thanks guys

Here is a image from the tech manual. Note Section 3. A marap list should be available.

Its annoying how slow marap is we have been waiting 11 months now for approval to fit a bolly onto a type certified Tecnam .

13. Some funny numbers there... ('000) 243, 226, 211, 207, 379.379 sounds fishy. 179 would fit the trend better and gives 2.23/100000 hours which is still the best in the table but also fits better with the other values.

I also get edgy when you start to see stastistics that have been massaged by normalising and other statistical tools. Tools that are there to get data to look good . 600 killed on our roads for how many driving hours would come out to be a very low number indeed. BUT ITS STILL 600. It can still happen to you!

Presenting statistics that show we are improving doesnt encourage improved airmanship , in fact it could do the opposite.

14. What about the other way around? Say, an RV9 or Tecnam , 24 reg. It's the usual bunch of forms? It appears on form029 all you need is a Type Certificate or Provisional, so one can presume that any aircraft type one has ever seen registered VH already has a Type Certificate , either submitted by the very first person to import / build / buy one or by the manufacturer. Is my presumption correct?

I am possibly looking at buying an LSA 24 and converting to VH. I am still considering the pros and cons of such. With a PPL and the right instruments to get into CTA I don't really need to I suspect. There appears to be little advantage to VH reg other than you won't get scoffed at by the big GA boys when you call out your model and number , instead of 'Alpha Bravo Charlie'

And yes, as an aside, I've previously been duly ignored inbound, simply by my 24 callsign. Just a little unnerving when your trying to get a position fix of others coming into a new airport !

Thanks

Ramjet

My son and i were flying into Port Maquarie , and there were about 4 other UA s approaching at the same time. The RPL captain also on approach did a great job in clarifying everyones position and intentions . So i guess like everything else its who you come accross at the time.

15. I PURCHAASED THIS AT AN ESTATE SALE AND DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT IT IS. THERE ARE NO MARKINGS EXCEPT WHAT IS ON THE PANEL. THANKS

Doesnt look very old , its using phillips head screws , binary coded decimal thumb wheels , the knobs are 1970 style plastic that we used on a lot of projects back then. Must be a range finder cause it says "range"

Range usually means that your going to drop , fire or throw somthing at someone. MPs will be at your door soon! Have fun with it!

Hello fellow flyers. Please tell me what you think of these odds?

2 aircraft arrive in Australia in the same container 11 years ago, build number 155 &156, get put together then get registered with RAA with rego Numbers 24- 4574 & 24-4575 then go their seperate ways.

Well today 4574 has joined its younger sibling once again to live in the same hangar in East Gippsland

The new addition being now 11 years old has a measly 159hrs TTIS on the tach while mine has been flown regularly over the last 5 years has 760hrs, she only had 227 when I got her.

Destiny or fate that is the question.

I’m pretty chuffed seeing them in the same hangar after all this time apart.

PS not a bad custom paint job the previous owner had done as it came in plain white from the factory for this very reason

Great to see them together, here at Cessnock we have had a long association with the Sierras, started when a GA school bought Six of them. Then after a number of years they were re registered into RA. At one point last year we had 5 aircraft all blue and white , airworthy and flying . 2 were in the raaus school the other 3 privately owned.

Since then one aircraft has been sold and has "flown the nest" During this time there was a white LSA sierra hangared here as well . Since we had 5 identical aircraft a few pilots have done their formation endorsments and we now have a sierra flight that does occasional appearnces at local events.

The sixth blue and white is around cessnock as well but is being restored . And theres no date yet for its return to service.

Cheers

17. That's fine and all if you have the space for another 2 1/4" hole, and you have the ability to cut a perfect hole cuz that's not as easy as it sounds. Also, those clocks are US$ 160.00 on Aircraft Spruce USA, plus shipping. I usually just use one of these smaller rectangular clocks, which also double as both a Voltmeter and OAT. Less than A$10 delivered ex China. I usually buy two at a time in case of failure - for the money, why wouldn't you. Below are the details, and the buying link. 18. hi

Can anyone recommend a panel mounted flight clock? We have a common style of aviatin digital clock fitted but its starting to mis behave . Looking for somthing thats intuitive to set and use, cant say that the old one we have is easy to use . ( Astro tec LC 2 ).

19. That's the biggest problem about statistics and surveys...they are always directed towards the wrong sampling. "Most of us like the forum as it is now" would be those that use the site so naturally they like it as it is now, but it could be said those that don't use the site don't like it. Yes 500 registered users log in every day and in real terms that could equate to say for the sake of discussion 1,000 registered users logging in every 2nd day (500 one day and a different 500 the following day)...etc but what about those 500, or 1,000 or even 2,000 that don't even use the site...how do we know what they don't like about the site?...do they even know the site exists?...and even if we were able to survey only those that don't like the site how do we know what they say is really true given all the political and personal agendas, and we have seen many a user come on here with extreme agendas, cause trouble and then go no longer seen on the site again. This is why I have always tried to make the site the best resource possible, including keeping the site updated to make it work better, to help recreational aviators rather than let it sink into anarchy but there is always a price to pay on both sides of the coin, personal and professional. I guess the dream of just seeing everyone with the common interest of recreational aviation coming together, helping each other, enjoying each other's company and their words is just that, a dream. Did you know that one person could post something that later saves the lives of several fellow aviators? It's a pity that agendas, politics and nastiness seems to be put before that by some people, and imagine how great such a resource could be if people didn't do that and placed a higher value on other people than their own agendas, politics and personalities. Perhaps the enthusiasm might not just return to resources like this site but also to the whole recreational aviation industry, imagine that!

Yes that is humanity at its worst. The dream we have was shared by Gordon Brittas the fictional recreation centre manager. But alas he did not achieve it either.

During the two most major conflicts last century people sent ( note sent ) white feathers to men that stood up and stated that they were non combatants . How many of those white feathers were delivered face to face ? Not many i bet. Forums and social media are exactly like that ! People feel free to abuse the ideas and thoughts of others but they wouldnt be so harsh face to face. Its also easy to be mis interpretted and very hard to correct mis interpretation .

This forum however is one of the better ones. So believe me its worth saving. If during its time it has stopped a single incident then its worth it . And i bet that many a pilot has learned things that make the skys safer .

Not a lot of comments on this toplc I note......
