1. Just thought I would share this cold weather observation with all the Rotax 912 drivers -I always "burp"/ "gurgle" my engine before first start up of the day. Then check my oil level.

Usually there is very little change in the oil level between service hours.

Last 2-3 pre start "burps" (over night temps down to near or below 0 degrees) the oil has only come up to the halfway mark.

Today I decided to add oil (I like it to be near the full mark).

Went to fetch oil. Came back. Dont know why, but checked level again - FULL!!

Thought about this and postulate - cold oil = thick gluggy oil (slow). Oil still moving slowly through system when I have checked the level.

I could have easily overfilled and blown excess oil overboard - waste & mess.

In future, during cold weather, will wait a few minutes to check level - I suggest you do the same.

My instructor taught me that one gurgle is never enough , to get a true oil level takes more than one burst of air through the reservoir . This might be even more important in cold conditions. .?

Where should you stand whilst burping your Rotax? In terms of safest position.

  3. Really? Since when? I first joined in about 1984 so I don't recall the month. Then I went commercial and had a long break and re-joined. It certainly wasn't on 1st July but my membership runs 01/07 to 30/06 year by year. Which month is your renewal due? And what year did you join?

    November

  4. I tried to mention this at a CASA safety meeting a few weeks ago ( an amalgamation of sources). I was pretty much stone walled from the moment I opened my mouth....... I'm starting to see personally the difficulty people have in dealing with CASA.[/QUOTeAt my safety seminar the CASA rep stated that they are concerned that vfr pilots have their heads and eyes focused within the cockpit On the EFB . And its only a matter of time before there is a mid air collision on route. What was the justification for this ? Same as relying ONLY on radio as a SITUATION AWARENESS tool . Not all aircraft have or use radios and not all aircraft have and use a EFB or transponder. So the data on the screen is not complete . They are concerned that pilots might not be keeping a proper lookout whilst using the small screen .

You decide for yourself im going to go with my instructors advice and do a proper scan. And if i happen to note a nearby aircraft on the screen , i will scan even more ! I guess they are saying dont trust the EFB traffic data, its not complete.

  5. Extract from RAA email received today;

"One option RAAus was exploring as a result of these changes was working with CFIs to provide assistance to members when renewing or applying for an ASIC. Following further investigation and review, the RAAus Board has taken the decision to no longer be an issuing body for the purposes of ASIC.

The new system carries with it complex, and what RAAus believes to be, onerous changes. As an example, face to face processing requirements will inconvenience our members and place pressure on our CFIs. The processes are both burdensome and administratively heavy with no obvious safety or security improvement. Implementing the new changes would add unnecessary cost to RAAus meaning the delivery of this service has essentially become unsustainable.

Furthermore, the risk placed onto our CFIs, staff and the Board has been assessed as too great for RAAus to accept. As an example, as an issuing body, anyone processing an ASIC application will be required to identify fraudulently prepared and forged documents and there are penalties for failure to take all the steps necessary to identify such documents. RAAus does not believe this is the role of our organisation.

Therefore, from 1 August 2017, RAAus will no longer accept applications for an ASIC or renewals for an ASIC, including applications from RAAus members."

RAA clearly criticizes the process making an observation which many have already discussed, and interestingly also noted in the document "no obvious safety or security improvement" , add to that the ridiculous cost and process involved with a system that will only inconvenience honest people and you would have to wonder why they persist with it.

Its a money maker! GA licence is free and changing that was too hard! Govt have done similar things in many areas. NSW fairtrading now charge a processing fee to process FREE licencees. When i complained i was told to make a complaint to .......... Fairtrading NSW duh ! Asic is a great way to make the public believe that somthing is being done and raise cash whilst doing it.

  6. Like all sensible people around aviation i cant see how an asic will make small airports any safer! I recently flew into and out of Walget. Didnt see a soul. Terrorists are not interested in flying into the terminal building in a country town. And even if they were, not having a asic wont stop them! They can do more damage using the methods and locations that these scum bags have developed in the last 2 years.

Perhaps we all need a VRSC, ( a van rental security card ). I deplore terrorisim but ASIC DOES NOTHING to make us any safer once you re away from a busy passenger terminal. Why cant our politician see this fact and act on it!

  7. Prob completly wrong here , because i couldnt get through the whole post. But you dont fly by numbers . You look, feel and react. Sets of numbers to fly by migh work in big heavy birds , but ultralights are about getting your head out of the cockpit 95% of the time. The only thing you cant judge using your senses is airspeed , yep its nice to glance at the altimeter as well , but the vsi never in the cct ( it lies to you in any case)

  8. Yep sure doesP2002 Tecnam Sierra

100kts cruise on 14lph, 6 hrs range & good payload

People used to say after I finished trike flying that 100kts won't be enough and I'd be looking for more

Well after 8 years triking at 60 kts and the last 4 1/2 years at 100, 100 is plenty enough for me as I'm 40 minutes ahead every hour in front of the trike

Love the P2002 as well. XC flight uses 18 ltr/hr . If i do a hour of circuits it does come down to 14 .

  9. Does anyone have any advice on how close is an acceptable distance to fly from the boundary of an active prohibited area?I have been set a trip which sees one leg run next to a prohibited area (which may or may not be activated on the day).

Others might think im being a bit vauge here but 2 nm is what will be expected of you on the flight. But wont be unhappy if its a little earlier ie turn away at a point that is easily confirmed on yor map ( if possible 3 points of coincidence. The idea is to make sure you dont infringe, its not about getting as close as you can to a restricted area . So find some points on the map you feel you can spot from your chosen height that are around that 3 to 5 mile range.. you can even make a comment to your instructor at this point that you are unable to reach the requested turning point because of the RA ........BC

  10. It might be OK for those with a good internet connection, but I have a download speed of 11 to 57kB/s and no mobile phone connection where I live 25km from one o the biggest industrial cities in Qld.

Yep , the fact that we are supposed to be a Commonwealth ( note that it is common and wealth ) has long been forgotten .

  11. Prrhaps im sliding off topic again... but.....

I noticed this morning whilst attempting to read a newspaper article online using my ipad mini. That what actually was annoying me was having to scroll the text sideways and up or down. But particularly the left and right scrolling . If you think about this in terms of reading a paper document you dont use your hands other than to turn the pages. Ie. you move your eyes and your head to track the text. And as a youngish / older person i have done this automaticaly since learning to read and now this process is interrupted by using a finger to bring the text onto the screen. ( if i shrink the screen its too small ) i guess i could use a desktop computer with a big monitor but it wont fit in the loo! Bring back cave painting , i was good at that!

  12. HiI am trying to locate the Tecnam P92JS Stall warning buzzer location. Mine has stopped working and l would like to fault find. If I recall the sound comes from above. l am guessing it is somewhere buried near one of the wing roots in the cabin?

The MM does not specify the location or the specific part. I figure it must be some kind of basic piezo electric buzzer 12v.

    Any pointers gratefully received.

    Ed

You got me thinking now as to where its located on our Sierra . It wont be in our roof because thats a canopy . And i cant recall seeing behind the panel. Though that's a logical place for it.

By the way you have checked the stall actuator out on the wing? They can suffer damage ( bent )

  13. I think i made comment in the early days of this thread. Well nothing has changed. I have tried to read the mag on line , but its just hopeless. And you know I worry a bit that I actually might be missing out on something usefull. I also feel very disconnected from RAus . A feeling I never had when the printed copy was included in our fee. Is this all bad? Perhaps not . But if I was on the board I would be concerned that the main mode of communication is failing to get its message out to the whole membership. And you know how the mag is distributed is not a easy thing to sort out. Perhaps the mag needs to go and be replaced by a simpler less glossy information sheet.

The role of raaus has always puzzled me. Is it our administrator , rule maker and enforcement body . Or is it our club? I think it tries to be both and that can make it difficult . Just food for thought. ....Drifting from the topic again

  14. Thanks all for your inputYes, the wizzbang aids I've ordered have 16 programmable frequency bands and will be adjusted to provide the amplification needed for each of these bands. They also have some mechanism for being able to adjust for sound direction. I will also be able to use an iPhone app to adjust them myself if I need to. I'm pleased to hear that I should be able to wear them under my existing ANR headset. I'll let you know when I've tried them.

Top stuff the direction bit is interesting. Because my hearing loss is different in each ear , my ability to determine where a sound comes from is useless. The hearing aids fix this . Of course it doesnt matter when using a headset since you hear everything in the center

  15. This sport demands deep pockets. A bit like owning a boat. If you cant train properly due to funds shortage then dont risk your life and the reputation of the sport. Reading your posts leads me think that you want to cut corners because of lack of funds.

We all understand your passion but dont risk it if you cant do it properly.

Join a local club get to know the guys and gals , do your BFR , Be part of the community in the way that best matches your circumstances and along the way you will get plenty of invites to go flying.

In my case reading the mag online ( and i have tried ) just doesn't do it for me ! And paying the extra subscrption doesnt seem worth it. I can read the copy at the flying club but I dont.

Most important communication comes in by email from RAAUS . Because the mag is optional there can be no vital communication that is only just in the magazine. So if you buy it It is just for a good read as you correctly say . What concerns me just a little is the disengagement with the sport that cant realy be accounted for or documented. Anyway whats done is done , no good flogging a dead horse. Enjoy the read

  17. I aggree in general with all the comments , especially about filtering and amplification. My HA boosts upper frequencies which in my case restores the hearing frequency balance so f and s dont get muddled etc

My only issue with wearing my hearing aids is that you have to remember that you are wearing them and be very very careful when taking your headset off. Otherwise you might spend the next hour looking for a hearing aid ....and you how difficult finding lost things in a aircraft can be...

I use a on ear type headset these days so its now less of a issue than when i used a full muff style headset. But still gotta check.
