  1. Is my understanding of Cairns charges correct?

I read this as I can land and park anytime for $17/t but if the landing is between 1000 and 1400 local, then they will charge $350.

Is the solution just to avoid arriving between these times?

What about departing during these times?

    Seems a bit steep!

  2. Great article but I also find it amazing that the Brits don’t look to make more of their achievements especially in Manchester where these guys were from.

I recently visited Manchester and the Air & Science Museum was closed for renovations. Completely by chance I discovered the Avro Exihibition near Manchester Airport on what’s left of the old Woodford Aerodrome. It transpires that all the Lancaster’s were assembled there and it’s the birthplace of the Vulcan which is another great story.

  3. I was there two days ago. The lake has a lot more water in it than previously but the Warburton Groove is not as spectacular as I’ve seen it before. Hardly any birds except near the Warburton Inlet and a slow flight at 500’ was no drama.

William Creek is dead busy - make sure you book a table for dinner when you arrive! The accommodation is adequate when you consider just where you are, and everybody is super friendly.

We flew to Birdsville over the the Simpson and that is just spectacular at the moment.

  4. "MARYBOROUGH WILL BE BACK ON THE MAP."

Hi Ironpot.  My trike lives at YMYB, and I try to fly weekly.  The fuel was very recently recommissioned and is yet to be discovered by many pilots.  (Only Avgas unfortunately).     Facilities also include free camping area at the airport, toilets next to the exit entry gate, a takeaway shop across the road, and a short walk to town.  Mogas is just up the road at BP.   Taxis are available too of course.

I have recently became our Aeroclub Club Captain, and am in charge of advising members of fly-ins and activities to entertain our aviating passions.  An idea I am currently hatching is an annual long weekend (Labour weekend?) camping fly-in to YMYB, where you can camp 1 or 2 days, fly the area around Fraser etc, and enjoy others company.  The aero club may even be keen to cater a dinner evening and cooked breakfast.  Thoughts and comments anyone?

As a recreational pilot, I have not yet received a landing fee, but GA may be different.

See map attached for more info.

I wasn’t complaining.  Movement fee was fair. I agree, its a terrific set up and well worth visiting. We stayed in town - good food and lots of character.

  5. Great photo Phil! Brought back memories for me.

Coincidentally we are mixing it with the Singapore Armed Forces in Rocky who are currently undertaking NVG training. Weird experience flying NVFR knowing that a flight of four apaches (or Cinooks) are on approach somewhere out there on the other side of the airfield!

  6. I actually had a look at Maryborough airport this week and it had no welcome feel about it, so what is the draw card.?With all those fees and charges how well will fuel sails go.

    KP

Yep I was in there this weekend. I am not aware of the fees and charges but I dont think I’ve seen a similar facility more deserted ... maybe the availability of Avgas will change things. Lots of potential?

  7. I tried to form one once - spent a lot of time on it. First a 3 way then just two but it just got so complicated that I realised it was never going to be perfect. I ended up going out on my own.

Im aware that there are successful syndicates at Moorabbin etc but Ive got a feeling that they are operated by solicitors and accountants!

  8. AAA only had one glass cockpit C172, iirc. They charged even more for that one. I have been paying $414/hour (dual, $304/hour solo) and $109/hour for briefings + landing fees + all my own equipment for the entirety of my PPL until now. All on basic 6 pack C172R.Seems I may be on the lookout for a new flying school in Brisbane to complete my PPL. Any suggestions? (I absolutely must have it done by August. I was hoping for end of April, but I don't think that's a possibility now).

Have a look at Rocky Aero Club. Great facilities, big fat empty strip, empty skies and easy travelling up from Brissy!
