    Anyway Not a bad choice the GME, from the research I did and made in OZ.

     

    I like the price point around 600 bucks of any brand. These units look and seem a lot more robust than the cheaper jobs especially critical in the battery, flotation and signal duration departments I reckon.

  2. I did the transition about 3 months after getting my RA ticket.

     

    All hours and experience counts towards a PPL.

     

    If you have done and are rated for solo XC hours for example then that counts as done and instruments time as already outlined has to be done.

     

    Minimum 5 hours transition required to the satisfaction of the CFI THEN you have to learn the theory, and sit the exams as suggested in above posts.I found the exam theory a lot more difficult than others suggest but then I am a bit older and mentally challenged especially when it comes to understanding AIP and CAO`s.

     

    The online multiple choice exam questions can be very tricky with several answers that all look right,... you have to know the one that is more right.

     

    Go for it, I reckon it enhances your flying experience and attitude.

     

     

  3. Thanks for the country code info 1134581 but how does one get the country code encoded in a unit you buy overseas?

     

    My guess it will cost. I would want a unit that is country coded, the possible lost time may save my life.

     

    If the Oz available Mc Murdos are high $600? then we are in the same ball park.

     

     

  4. they are different

     

    US PLB`s generally can not be used in Oz and can not be located. CASA has some info on this fact and making pilots aware of it..

     

    The McMurdo unit pictured by 1134581 member is not an aviation purpose built PLB and will not work in Oz.

     

    They do make PLB`s that will work anywhere in the world and a cost I looked up for the entry model was 900 bucks, quite a bit more than the unit we are committing to.

    I agree Sth Africa is a great place to fly over , similar to Australia with the red earth etc. I actually drove past your airfeild last year when I was in Joburg on business.

     

    I was with my distributor on the way to an appointment and could not call in.

     

    Bloody hard driving past an airstrip you havent checked out.

     

    Enjoy the flights but I hope you dont crash outback near those crazy lions , hyenas etc could be slightly dangerous.

    The CASA MAILOUT is certainly motherhood, no specific data at all.

     

    Yes Escadrile, I do/ have flown those aircraft in my avatar including gazelle and several types of Jabs, I was having fun flying RA for a year b4 adding PPL. Love both forms.

     

    The eyesight paragraph was just an 'outside the 9 dots' comment, food for thought stuff and the 'hearing' comment is another good one to consider.

     

    Getting your bi-annual is a pain in the ass but worthwhile for any of us older buggers as we can get the other stuff checked out at the same time I mean, diabetes, prostate etc etc.

     

    Not a bad thing to do.

     

    Finally, There is no doubt I will lose my PPL license due to medical sometime and keep on flying RA. Maybe a little bit deaf , maybe a little bit blind, but not mute.075_amazon.gif.0882093f126abdba732f442cccc04585.gif

     

     

  7. CASA publication

     

    FYI, CASA has just posted an "urgent" publication to GA pilots in a bright red cover I guess in response to investigations of increasing mid air collisions over the past few years and last year especially.

     

    It`s essence really talks about situational awareness asking pilots to practise and adhere to strict circuit and radio procedures as a way to reduce collisions including visual lookout.

     

    Surely they are saying doing all of that may help decrease collisions. Doing only part of it may not be as effective.

     

    On another point could it be argued "he says tongue in cheek" that eyesight may not be as effective in some pilots as in others or between different classes of pilots?

     

    I refer to the fact that if you are relying on eyesight and no radio that maybe a PP can see better than RA pilots because they have a biannual eyesight check and RA pilots dont.

     

    Could your deteriorating eyesight be a threat to other pilots? Is a drivers license enough?:devil:

    Best thing to do with your pants on except Skydive!!!

     

    I have been twice and absolutely love this event. Cant say too much about what it offers and how well its run and I will go again.

     

    If its too expensive consider 'Warbirds over Wanaka' which though obviously small gets very good raps.

     

    I wrote an article about my last visit to Oshkosh in the RA magazine and lodged it in this site under blogs a while ago under skydog if you want my impressions in detail.

  9. On reading the weather

     

    I believe language should be easy to understand for the average and not so average population. Go to the lowest common denominator type of thinking.

     

    Yes, us weekend warriors theoretically should all be up to scratch on the terms and abbreviations but maybe with fewer cross country flights being taken some of those terms may be forgotten or not so sure.

     

    I liken this subject to lawyer speak, why is there a concerted push to simplify legalise?. Why is there leglislation making this mandatory in consumer law?

     

    One of my pet hates for a long time was the American way of spelling. Why cant those yankees learn the correct Queens english? Color is spelled colour for Gods sake!!!

     

    However I have changed my opinion lately.

     

    If color can be easily understood and spelled more easily then why not??

     

    Jail / Goal, aluminium / aluminum, and so on.

     

    I reckon the weather abbreviations were for short , space saving reports and a hangover from the old days of fax and telex communications to professional pilots. Today, with a lot more recreational pilots than in the past and the advent of computer plus the WWW, sorry, World Wide, Web, we have the space to take full words and print them out for our flight planning.

     

    Unambiguous, clear, simple communication should be the goal and lead to safer flying outcomes.

    I reckon you can easily get a fly , as passenger and keep that aviation fever going by slipping on down to your local recreational flying club and snooping around putting out those hints for a ride.
