1. From Google Maps, I'd reckon you are right. Looks like there are some nice unusual aircraft based there.

Correct. The jet powered Cri Cri is based at Serpentine. There are around 130 aircraft on the field - from memory around 80 experimentals, 20 or so vintage/warbirds and the rest are commercially built. Interesting aircraft include several Tiger Moths and Austers, a Fox Moth, Sopwith Pup, Bucker Jungman, Stearman, Pitts S12, a couple of Tailwinds, Yaks, Culp Special, Stinson, Spitfire replicas, the Silver Centenary, Pietenpol, plus plenty of Jabirus, Zeniths, about 23 RV's of various types and well as Cessnas, Pipers etc.

Serpentine is the homebuilt capital of Australia. Like a giant Santa Claus sack of projects and enthusiasts.

  2. Have a look at the AOPA letter and attached extract showing how Monk votes AGAINST medical reform for private flying. For those still to realise the disastrous mistake made giving the autocratic control to a couple of people that quite obviously have a hidden private agenda that is contrary to the wishes/desires & benefits of ALL private flying.

Members of RAA really need to re-assess their position on this type of behaviour before an implosion

Do we know who voted for?

  3. Getting back to the subject in hand on RA Aus, There is a document going around for a call for a special general meeting. Ben Morgan can pass on the details of the person sponsoring it. (David Jardine). As the Board elections are on I suggest that those wanting to take some action pass on their proxy to David Jardine and Ben has his details. He is seeking a couple of resolutions and success with this would start a process that might bring about change.

  4. Some of those Bachelor of APPLIED Science can be pretty Kelloggs corn flakes packet sorts of degrees. He is so Naïve he thinks you can have a plane that doesn't need servicing and can have a rare type of engine fitted that the "maker" has a servicing contract with that you don't get to know much of the details of. . Also grounds the airline world wide to show the maintenance people he means business and to impress the government . Nev

Yes, I bought a lot of tools at the Qantas Melbourne maintanence auction. Since then as a regular flyer I have seen seats held together with Gaffa tape and other "roughnesses" that aren't a good look. He's probably got management on a bonus system for cutting costs. Not in itself a bad management tactic but sooner or later, a NASA level Challanger accident if taken too far.

  5. Yes, I doubt he knows or cares. I've even had CEOs of an Airline say not knowing much about Aviation is a plus. Making a virtue of ignorance. In past times the GM walked through the maintenance facilities and talked to people. Now they are. just accountants and their main aim is to just cut costs.. without really knowing the eventual effect of some of them If you go into an expansion Phase you end up wanting to pirate people from other OVERSEAS Aiirlines instead of using your own hand picked talent .. Nev

However "Joycie" does have a B.S. applied Science and doesn't come from the Harvard business school of asset stripping, but all the same, those old days of the engaged CEO fostering the company and people are long gone.

  6. No but I saw his cousins in San Francisco, having been approached by a "poor couple" in the City. They both had poured something like petrol into their eyes to simulate crying. On a cold day he was wearing a pair of leather pants and bare top and she was in one of those hanging cotton dresses that screamed poverty. We had been warned about getting sucked in by panhandlers, so sat back and watched them picking up notes from good samaritans. After a while we caught a tram down to the Bay. On the way down a near-new Buick flashed by and in the driver's seat was the guy in the leather pants. By the time we got down to the last tram stop, there they were, two tragic figures waiting to greet the tram full of tourists.

Seen the same show in India. It is a career.

  7. Yes I remember him. With Bob Katter and Tony Windsor he stabilized a successful government and saved us from the dysfunctional rabble who have recently been holding our nation back.

Yes and probably soon to be replaced by another rabble. At least functional enough to "never interrupt the enemy when he's making a mistake"

  8. A new label is better than the alternative marmalade where the recipe is decided by unions, cooked by an ex recipe writer and advertised cheap. When you pay for it at the register it turns out to be, expensive, a waste of money and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. yuck.gif.4c85ff36d4d9a0bd466be4926a1ba11e.gif

A slight variation on what we have now? (Minus the union pestilence). Could GA be any more neglected by government?

  9. Hi all,I'm pretty new to this so this may be silly question

However what is exactly meant by

Surveillance activities of members of the organisations

    in Part 149

Key proposals - development of Part 149

Here is a recent forum presented by CASA on the development of the new regulations. Prima facie it looks promising from my limited perspective. All it needs is positive and competent industry contribution and engagement

  10. Not a great public blue to have at a time when we need maximum government representation cohesion as an industry. Looks like a case of "mission creep" on the part of RA Aus. Hardly surprising that a motivated and competent group will want to "expand" their business. In a recent letter in the mag, Michael referred to RAA as the largest membership group and indicated future horizons. Not hard to say when you have to join to get a licence. RAA Board elections are on. I'm making some calls. New board members need to be independent thinkers who can't be badgered or bullied to tow the line, if the line is just to build more RAA Inc at the expense of the established other groups. (Assuming they are doing their job).

  11. Hey guys -Thanx for the great welcome response! I think I'm going to have fun here. I don't know if I am writing in the right place, but if not I'll figure it out. More seriously, the things that are important to me:

#1: Light plane. I don't have a pilot license yet. I might do that, but it looks like I can get something that would suit my needs just fine that fall under the less restrictive licensing requirements. Ultralight, sport pilot, experimental airplane, ect. I am not crystal clear on all of the fine details between the different catagories, but I am in the process of trying to learn. If someone has a suggestion on where to go to get crystal clear, it would be appreciated.

#2: Trailerable. I don't want to have to rent space at the local airport every month to park it. Also way more exposure to the elements that translates to more maintenance time & cost and general deterioration. I think the folding/removable wings just has to follow in order to get it into/onto a trailer.

#3: Hard body/wings. I have tried to have an open mind so far looking at all possibilities of aircraft that might address my desire to fly. Even investigated things like paramotors and the like. But when I look at the price of various equipment/aircraft it seems to me that I can get something made with more rigid/robust materials (metal, fiberglass, etc.) for not too much more money. These stronger materials would again also translate to less maintenance/replace/repair costs in the long run. Safer too, I believe. I would consider something like a fabric wing if I have to, but if I am patient enough to find the right thing I don't think I have to.

#4: Short takeoff/landing. Ideally I would like something that I can takeoff/land more places than the airport. The bush planes that can takeoff and land in just a few feet are awesome! I would love to have one of those. I do a lot of adventuring offroad on my motorcycle to some pretty remote places. That is the kind of flying I would also like to do - just follow the wind to some cool spots and be able to land someplace that looks interesting. Also less airport fees if I can takeoff more places.

#5: Less than $100 dollars. (Just kidding!) At this point I think I can get something that will suit me well for $20,000 give or take $5000. Obviously not new aircraft. But unless I am being totally delusional, I see some decent stuff out there in that price range. Again, I am new to this so maybe someone needs to set me straight on what reality actually is on this point. But that is kind of the price ballpark I am shooting for.

These are the criteria I am looking for right now. I appreciate the suggestions that have been made thus far. Hopefully this post will help nail down more clearly what it is that I want. I am open to any and all suggestions, offers, education, complaints, ridicule, ect. that anyone might want to throw my way. I am looking forward to learning a lot from ya'all. Thanks!

If you can find one of these second hand there is a folding wing kit for it. A bot slow but solid and reasonably cheap.
