Carby Ice and slow revs... the 3300 will sit on 3000 + RPM all day and run smoother...

I have a 2200 , I sit on 2900 average. ( the book says 3050 max rpm) The only time I ever slow to 2400 is on downwind..

My mate has a 3300, he cruises around the 3000 rpm 99% of the time. As far as I know the 3300engine tops out at 3300 rpm....

I've experienced carby ice on a reasonably warm day, after only around 1000ft decent.

I also noticed it seemed to surge a bit when I left the carby heat on for an extended period (one only)...

So, work it harder and use carby heat when theres moisture about, especially a change..

  2. From the other "Fouled plugs" thread seems $15 ea on special @ SCAutoSome were bought for $12.75 ea from UK

    So this $10.50 looks cheap.

Sould last way longer than conventional ones, which are around $6 ea locally I think

I pay $3.50 each for the standard (NGK) ones, and change them every 25 hours.

I was considering changing to Iridium plugs and better leads, but no-one has sugessted it is worthwhile...

  3. I have a great Jabiru LSA 55 which needs a new interior lining. The original was made by Nylex who have gone out of the business. Just wondering if anyone out there knows of a suitable replacement fabric and source. Its very similar to the fabric that is used on some office room dividers. Its "sticky' - velco styleCheers Ian

Ian, they used to use what I know as "frontrunner" It was inside my jab, (a thin, in my case grey, fabric with lines in it, like old fashioned carpet).

I enquired about something to replace it and was offerd a product that is much easier to fit.

I was told it is used to cover rear dashes in cars etc and that the "frontrunner" (My dad had a catermeran fully lined with the stuff) is "going out of fashion" .

This product has no lines, comes in a couple of colours. I went for a dark grey. It stretches around corners etc , you can insert little pieces. All in all it is a great product.

I don't know what its called, but I purchased if from Jacksons Foam and Vinyl, 63 Raceview St, RACEVIEW, QLD, 4305. (07) 3281 1999 .

They will tell you what its called! I purchased my fabric for my new seat cover/cushions there as well.

    Hope this helps

  4. Hey James..

Donny at Jabiru told me 15W50 is the go, He told me it also gets the heat out of the motor quicker... He also said brand was not that important, as long as it's aero oil. I think they use shell, because the nearest depot is a shell depot..

  5. I've heard that the solid lifter motors have a bit more grunt, mine has solid lifters.

the later model jabs have bigger exhausts than my sk2200, and bigger carbies.

Speak to Donny in the Jabiru engine shop, no-one knows more about them... hes got a hot 2200, the prop idea is the most economical, Maybe use course prop in Winter, fine prop in Summer? . . . WG

  6. Hi everyone,

does anyone know the "acceptable" max oil temp for a 2200 engine? Mine, on a 26 deg OAT day, is reaching just under 100 deg (no matter what airspeed in climb), dropping back quickly on descent. <CUT>

    Cheers, Jim

    Hey Jim,

I have an SK2200, I have just put later model heads on the 2200 motor, made new air ducts, opened up the top cowl by over 50% ...

A good friend of mine has a 6 cyl Jab, basically did the same thing, it runs much cooler.

One of our other club members is in the process of a 6cyl Jab motor rebuild, most likley due to running hotter than neccessary for years, hes opened up his cowl now..

Had a problem with one head during testing/run in, (it picked up a valve seat) but the guys at Jabiru could not get the bits to me quick enough (no charge)

  7. I used the 3 spare pages (as it can show 20) for my checklists... I showed a couple of my pilot mates and they want one too!

Hey Ross, I used text "buttons" do you know is there a way to touch them so they change color as you "check" them?

I'm using your main page you made, with some minor tweaking, it now appears as the 4th page after my checklists...

  8. For those on the 'tech savvy' side, I have just found a great little (free) program for GPS Tracking in Real-Time. It runs on any Windows Mobile device. So those with PDA's or smartphones can use it. I accompanied a short flight from YSBK down to YWOL and tested it out. Yes live tracking will only work if you are in range of 3G or GPRS phone towers, but for low and slow around our major centres it should work a treat. I rang my wife at home and told her to open google Earth and she could see our track and position updated every thirty seconds, even she was amazed.Heres the link to TrackMe

Do those pages save anywhere? can we see them somewhere? sounds cool..

I tried my iphone while flying using its gps, it was pretty damn cool watching the "flashing blue dot" wizzing accross the satellite images ...

  9. Cosmick - that's what we like to hear. People saving heaps of money and getting great technology in their rec flying.Warick - I've sent you the Coolangatta VTC (you're in Boonah right?). You can try it out with that - just buy it later if you need it - to keep it legal.

I always stay on my main page - I designed it with everything I need. Pretty close to the one in the first post in this thread.

I did an update of it when setting up Pud's 7" for the new resolution. He hasn't tried it in the air yet, but I'll bet he likes it.

I can send you that too if you want.

    Cheers,

    HEY ROSS

Just got back from dinner at the Boonah Bowls club...

I put it in the map you sent and it looks great. I'll be buying a map package for sure.

Where can I download waypoints? (I assume you can?)

I'm still using a demo version.. 049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif Soon to purchase the full version

I notice my device has a sim card slot too?

I'd definatley appreciate any of your custom pages related to flying.

It was a simple process to put the ozexplorer in and to copy the maps too.

One of the easiest "computer" setups I've done!

Does one of the pages have an "old school" road to show you are on track if you want? I have not seen it yet...

    MANY THANKS!!

  10. here and should explain better than I can.PocketPC PDA's with High Resolution screens (True VGA and greater)

This note is for High Resolution PDA's such as the HP 310/312 or VGA Pocket PC's running in "true VGA" mode where the toolbars and dialogs appear too small. If you put a file called hires.dat in the folder where OziExplorer is installed (the contents of the file do not matter), OziExplorerCE will detect the file when it runs and change the size of its dialogs and other windows to suit devices with high resolution screens. Please note - this does not necessarily apply to Pocket PC's with VGA screens, OziExplorerCE already recognizes these PDA's and automatically adjusts. If you have loaded a utility to change the Pocket PC VGA to "true VGA" then adding the hires.dat file may help.

I dropped the OZIEPLORER files into my new GPS (and told it to look there for its gps software) and it WORKED!!011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif

The one that I got from e-bay ....I tried that (hires.dat) and it worked, have not decided if I will keep it though, I just have the demo maps.

I would like to try a real map to decide if I wanna buy the lot?

Do you use the original screen setup's ??

or have you designed your own, the screenshots you showed look fine...

I could not get my PC to read the 4gb (as its HC SD) so i used a 2gb one. I'm not going to store mp3's or videos on it ..

What can I use the blutooth feature for?

Give me a call 0412115377 I just went down and back, I can give you some hints, YOu can take a more direct route, especially in a slippery plane!

  13. It's all-metal, made here in Canada, and seems perfectly suited for the kind of flying we can do in Canada. I've not yet flown one, but I visited the factory and it's an impressive operation. I saw a completed fuselage and wings which are just a few days away from final assembly at a local airfield. The interior is manufactured and installed by a local company that does work on business aircraft; it's the best I've seen on this class of aircraft. Wing chord is about five feet, which is certainly the largest I've seen. I like the all-metal construction, and I like the fact that the manufacturer is relatively local. The R80 has a huge wing, gets off the ground in about 200 feet, and cruises at 95 or 100 mph, which is plenty for me. There is an exceptional amount of baggage space, and the aircraft has a lengthy history of operation in the Canadian north (hence my concern about the Jab in cold weather). I believe you guys have a few R80s and would expect the owners are very pleased.

I probably can't fly one until the spring, so a final decision isn't imminent. There are other potential candidates, but none of them have a fleet in Canada which slows me down a bit.

Thanks very much to all of you for your responses. I can't recall how I stumbled onto your forums, but this is far and away the most useful and instructive resource I've found. And I've researched the entire subject to exhaustion.

    Best regards,

    Chip

Will your aircraft be hangared all the time?, can you keep the engine warm in beetween flights.... Thats something you normally need to do over there isn't it? or isn't it cold enough. I'd talk to the guys from jabiru and see what the suggest?

I just got my first Jabiru, its got a 2200 in it and I am impressed, my best mate in our club has a 3300, his has some cold issues, but its an early one, and it has higher compression than a normal one. when he needs a replacement (in about 200hrs) hes going to buy a brand new one, hes of the opinion that there are no more issues with them at all.... just keep up the regular servicing. As far as I know, you don't need to service quite so often if you use mogas..

  14. Or you can go to Supercheap and buy a 1m (or so battery cable). Hook it to the battery +ve, run it down the firewall (secured with cable ties here and there) and out the bottom. Hold it with a P-clip bolted into the cockpit floor. To boost the plane on a cold morning put the +ve jumper on the cable end and the other one on an exhaust pipe. No need to remove cowls or any of that. Worked for me .....

What my mate has done with his is put a small bolt through just behind the cowl (on the non removable part) it links to the positive, I have not seen underneath, but the cable would be very short.

He uses that to boost battery power occasionally, but still need to put a heat gun up its bum to get it warm enough to start, when its a cold morning.

My 2200 seems ok so far, his is a 3300...

  15. this post. Is that what you mean?I haven't set up one of the 7" units yet, but it would be easier than setting up a Navman or Mio because it already has access to Windows - you don't have to unlock it.

It should be simply a matter of downloading and installing OziExplorerCE, loading my waypoint file and the customized screen you can see in the above post, buying and loading the maps you want and go flying.

You can also buy the PC component and install that so you can design your own screens, create routes and waypoints, etc.

After reading some forum post on here, I ordered a 7" GPS on e-bay, I expect it to arrive in the next week...

Where do i get the maps for ozexplorer??

I could not find anything listed as vnc or vtc? 041_helmet.gif.78baac70954ea905d688a02676ee110c.gif

  16. I spoke to the Engine guy from Jabiru today, as I want to use the BEST oil, he said the straight grade is good, but can cause difficulty in starting during cold weather. He also said that the multigrade 15W50 has the same wear characteristics as the (in my case the 100 grade) and he said the muligrade actually allows better cooling he said "it gets the heat out quicker".

He also said as long as its aviation oil, it does not really matter which one you use, they use shell because the depot is nearby.

I did some quick research and found the esiest place to get shell "aeroshell 15w50" was the shell depot at Archerfield Airport in Brisbane. My local depot got back to me and wanted about $3 or $4 more per QUART.

One of my best friends has a 3300 in his Jab and it needs a hairdryer on cool or cold mornings, even running the multigrade oil. Hes going to buy a brand new 3300 in a crate in about 200 hours, he reckons this will fix his starting woes, as the new motors are a bit more refined.

My 2200, seems ok in the cold.

One of our other club members also has a 3300, he also has trouble in cold weather.

We are all in Queensland, but still have some cold mornings of course.....
