  1.  Diagnostic is  best guess, my best guess would be that the cylinder is actually quite rich & some fuel is being burnt in the exhaust port. That is the only way I could imagine a rich mixture would show a high temp.

The return spring is at its weakest when the throttle is near fully open. Any binding in cable would most likely show near  wide open throttle.  I had problems balancing my carbs, I found that the return spring did not have the strength to return with the  very flexible multi strand cable. It just occasionally would slow the throttle. It was difficult to find as the vibration from the engine would ensure it corrected its self. I found a slightly more rigid cable & replaced it. That cured the problem with the slight stiffness just helping the spring to maintain tension  After that it was easy to complete the carb balance.

  2. The statement "the Chinese  want to takeover the world " is racist. I have met Chinese who are no different than I am. There wish would be to have a happy healthy & hopefully prosperous life. It is wrong to assume that they have, as individuals any wish to dominate anyone else.

I grew up reading comics where the Nazi Germans were the most evil guys. I was taught to hate Germans as a child. That racist feeling persisted until in my 20s I met a Scot who had spent nearly all of the 2nd world war as a POW. He was telling me about his experiences & happened to mention that he still wrote to one of the guards 20 years after war end. When he explained that the normal German was just like me & him I was able to get rid of those racist feelings. One of my best friends was born in Germany & his father fought in the war. Not by choice but by regulation.

I have noticed that the news media & also Hollywood movies depict the "bad " guys to direct the opinions of the masses. The Bond movies always had a Russian as the bad guy  until the fall of the Soviet Union. After that we got the ruthless triad gangs & Chinese communists. 9.11 brought in the Arab Terrorist & lately we are back to the Chinese. I am sure it is no coincidence but is in fact designed to cause  racism in the community . Donald Trump was able to manipulate the public by demonising groups & countries very effectively. I believe we  have politicians with the same intentions.

If our government had legitimate concerns about a major partners behaviour would it not be more successful to have a quiet word of advice in confidence than to name call & create a situation where aggression is the only  response. The ensuing bad feeling must have really impressed our masters the US Sherrifs.

We have created a situation where we cannot give our Chinese  partners advice.

It has also fostered racist emotions within the Australia community to the point where Chinese are being openly abused in public.

People are not the problem in our world , politicians are.

  3. Quote

"At the moment, I am opposed to Chinese cars because the Chinese want to take over the world." end of quote

Where did you get such a racist opinion?. Have you visited China, do you know much about its history?.

So many Australians have been  turned against our most important trading partner by a media dominated & controlled by the US.

A few facts, China with the largest population in the world was a basket case only 50 years ago.

India with a similar population but a democratic system was in a more advanced   position at that time.

India is now a 3rd class country with a millions of people living in extreme poverty.

In the last 50 years China has come from a really poverty stricken 3rd world economy to be close to the US in

                          technological capacity.

Their citizens have a much better standard of living & future than their neighbours in India & their standard of living

will  equal those in the US in the not to distant future.

There education ensures that all students get the benefit of free education to the limit of the students ability.

They may live in huge blocks of flats but there are fewer homeless than in the US.

They have never threatened other countries or invaded them in our era. Even in the past they built a huge wall to

                             keep others out.

They will replace the US & be the world leader in  technology & trade.

The US is the most aggressive country in the world. They have in 70 years killed more innocent civilians &

destroyed  more homes & infrastructure than any country in the history of the world. In a desperate attempt to

stop the spread of communism. In that time they have never been able to change the direction of the people they

                            invaded.

They have applied sanctions on numerous countries simply because they do not like their political system.

They have threatened countries for purchasing arms from competitors.

The political system in the US is a basket case, They have no universal health system,

University is for those who can afford it not for those who qualify.

They have even interfered in the Australian political system. (removed Whitlam)( read the historical events)

The US government are currently paying private phone companies to remove 4G Huawi equipment. Its costing over 1 Billion for the 1st stage. They have no universal health system & extensive poverty & homelessness. There hospitals were using plastic bin bags for protective equipment a few months ago due to lack of funding. They would rather try & spite China than look after their own population. I Billion would buy a lot of protective gear.( There was never a known security problem with the 4G equipment.)

    The above  are facts.

The Tesla Cars built in China are reputed to be of a higher standard than those built in the US. My only experience with an American SUV was a Ford Explorer, 12 months after purchase I saw underneath when it was on a ramp for service. It had so much rust that it appeared to have been living in the ocean. At that time the Ford Explorer had zero underbody protection. I mean ZERO, not even  paint. It took much complaining & threats but eventually Ford had the fuel tank removed & the whole underbody sand blasted & painted. 5 days later I had a near normal SUV.

I have spent 4 weeks travelling  in the Southern States in the US, 3 weeks the length of Russia & 3 weeks through China.

So sad to think of the millions of decent hard working people of all races who will die if we ever have war.

If it happens it will not be China that starts it as they only have to be patient to replace the US as the number1 world power.

  4. Back to Electric powered aircraft that you can buy now. Manufactured by Flight Design.

    Advert follows:

The F2e is destined to be a leader in the next major change in flight training and personal recreation. The F2e was designed to meet EASA CS-23 and FAA Part 23/F44 certification for electric aircraft and the ASTM F3180 low-speed flight characteristics standard for departure characteristics, spin resistance, and stall warning. . Basic model price: €245.000 INCLUDING 75 KWH BATTERIES.

So we already have 2+ hrs flight time, see the following.

    @ 8000 feet MSL, 200nm

      Time Energy
    Taxi time 5 1
    Takeoff&Climb 14 22
    Cruise 85 KTS 100 50
    Descent 20 0
    Landing 5 2
    Total 144 minutes 74 kWh

So it is expensive but it is also one of the most advanced aircraft available, even has airbags & of course a BRS.

I fly one of their early models a CTsw. Best purchase I ever made . Typical clever German design, eg the fuel switch /lever in the off position obscures the key required to start, It ensures that the fuel is "on" when the engine is started as you cant put the key in until fuel is on. Flight Design have an authorised manufacturing company in China. That should ensure a much more reasonable price if it ever gets into production.

Amuses me when I hear the "Chinese knockers" BMW  trusted there mini engines to be manufactured in China, come to think  Harley Davidson did the same until the US government put the stoppers on.

Following is off topic but tells us what we dont want to know or see. Never seen sights like this any where, I have travelled,Moscow to Beiging via Mongolia, China North to South, the length of Vietnam, most of Indonesis & even though I thought India was a terrible country for poverty this UTube shows  the worst conditions & a total disrespect for human compassion. It is in the country that many Australians follow blindly & want to emulate.

  5. A prop change may have been a bad example as minor changes are also included. A better example may have been the use of a none original Rotax oil filter. In the case of Flight Design they state that the engine be maintained to comply with Rotax maintenance. Rotax state that a genuine oil filter must be fitted. This would make the aircraft none compliant if an alternative was fitted.

The Flight Design specs give the air pressure to all tyres as 32PSI. It was said by some pilots that this could allow the tyre to turn damaging the valve in a heavy landing. A general approval was obtained &  I have a copy  approval from Flight Design that allows inflation to 45PSI.  This is an indication of how little can be changed with LSA to keep the aircraft compliant.

I guess if the manufacturer changed the recommended pressure to 45PSI it may give someone who had experienced damage due to under inflation to have a claim against the manufacturer. There is  so much time spent trying to protect ars** from litigation.

  6. This is exactly why LSA including experimental LSA is controlled by the manufacturer & alterations are not allowed. Even though the replacement may appear to be ideal  & serve its purpose as a gasket , it may behave very differently with immersion in fuel that could possibly contain ethanol. It may be of interest to see my recent post in "3300A a tale of two etc" . If we follow the rules there is virtually no place for mods even in Experimental LSA. The option to do as we were able under the "19" home built registration has been taken from us. LSA may server CASSA & RAA well. It does place more regulation on the builder maintainer. I some case it may be a good thing when looking at the pics of those old parts removed.

  7. LSA is not easy to make any mods. Any changes no matter how minor must be approved by the manufacturer. If you follow regulations, it is not much easier with Experimental LSA. Changes still require approval but that can be authorised by a "CASSA Authorised Person" There are not many & some are quite expensive as they are putting their heads on the line with the approval. CASSA control LSA, RAA only administer LSA under the strict CASSA rules. I understand that is because CASSA also both control & administer LSA that are registered under GA.

As an example to fit a prop different than the one approved by the aircraft manufacturer, approval must be obtained by the manufacturer. The alternative is to change to Experimental LSA & get a certificate from a CASSA Authorised person. That may cost as much as the prop as it would also require  weighing the prop & if there was a weight difference a new W&B would need to be done,  by a CASSA approved person on certified scales.

If you do not believe this contact "Tech" at RAA.

  8. This Service instruction covers the cancellation of the 5 year change interval for Teflon fuel hose. Teflon fuel hose with installed fire hoses are now to be replaced at TBO.

Teflon hoses require there own fitting & cannot be used with the original hose fittings. The fittings are difficult to source & its easier to have the hoses made & supplied with the correct fittings & fire resistant hose.

The latest Rotax SI 28.5.21 has a detailed instruction on how to measure the "mass moment of inertia" of the propeller. I have a 3 blade Warp Drive prop fitted that I know is near max recommended weight. Now I know how to check it.

I expect that most pilots that fly with a Rotax have signed up on the Rotax website with the engine number & get all information automatically. For those that are not aware of the service its a great free resource.

  9. This link will resolve any disagreement about Rotax approval of Teflon hoses.<https://legacy.rotaxowner.com/si_tb_info/serviceinfo/si-912-022.pdf>

As in rubber hoses there are different qualities in Teflon. I have read that non conductive hoses are the best. I would spend some time researching specifications before I fitted them. They cannot be fitted to the standard barbed fittings used for rubber hoses. So that requires replacement of all fittings. The kit cost is about Au $2000  + shipping for all oil & fuel hoses with fire sleeves. The supplier for Vans Aircraft tests each hose after assembly. Seems like a lot of $ but it would reduce the labour on the  first install with no other costs after that. The value of the  additional safety with the fire sleeves would depend on the individual.  Personally I would not want to fly without the fire sleeve especially as the CT does not have a steel firewall.

  10. Skippy, you misquoted me. I hope you understand technical instructions better than your understanding of what I wrote. I said "I hung the piece of hose on my hangar wall & left it until the next rubber change at which time I was able to break pieces off it." I have always changed my rubber hoses  at the 5 years recommended time. "My friend was considering" but has not done the Rubber change yet.  Rotax actually use some teflon hoses, cost is maybe what prevents them from having all teflon. If I consider the fact that often the fire sleeve is  damaged  after the removal of the old hose, & it is much more expensive than the hose. Add the cost of 4 new clamps for the hose & sleeve per length, I dont use Jubilee clips just single ear stepless  SS. hose clips. There is a good argument for the teflon kit which is recommended by Van's for the RV 12. If you check on the specs of Teflon hose you may find that there will be zero fuel vaporisation through the hose. Often if something looks fantastic it usually is. I have almost justified the cost of the kit to myself for the next change.

  11. I thought that it was compulsory to use a fire sleeve with all fuel & oil lines inside the cowls. Compulsory or not I would not have a naked fuel or oil line around a hot engine without a fire sleeve. My first rubber change from new in 2011 had me tugging & twisting to remove a Gates hose fitted as an original. It still felt soft & pliable & I was wondering if it was really necessary. Changed my opinion when the hose broke & I examined the cords. A fuel line should not break, I hung it on the hangar wall as a reminder & when I did the next rubber change looked at it again. At 10 years old the hose had surface cracks & it was possible to break pieces off . Maybe it was a faulty batch, its still on the hangar wall ready to show anyone who is reluctant to do the 5 year rubber change. Some Flight Design owners in the US had problems with rubber sharves in the Bing float chambers. This was found to be only when they had fitted fuel injection hoses. The reasoning was that the injection hose is much harder & quite difficult to fit . Twisting & pushing was deemed to be the cause of the slivers of rubber finding its way into the carb & causing engine problems often intermittent & difficult to diagnose. It is not necessary to use a high pressure hose designed for fuel injection on a Bing carb that cannot handle  above 5PSI. There could also be an argument that the low pressure hose will compress more easily to give a better seal with lower tension on the fitting. The Rotax fuel pump at one time was not included in the rubber change. It is now & if you have noticed how flimsy the diaphram is for the Bing carbs there is also a similar one in the fuel pump. A shame they do not fit a serviceable pump so the diaphragm can be replaced.

A friend was considering fitting the Teflon hoses which do not have a timed life. They look fantastic,I was given this link but have no experience with this company  <http://aircraftspecialty.com/RV12Fuelkit.html>.

It is  good to have these discussions about critical maintenance there is so much to learn on some of the websites.

  12. In less than 10 years we will have pilot less drones & possibly pilot less regional passenger airlines. The Defence Forces are already using remotely guided

offensive weapons. They can operate safely but only if all aircraft broadcast their location.

The height reduction of E class airspace may well be part of the need to plan for the future. Drones could replace  trucks for example rural mail delivery &

the live export rock lobster trade in our remote areas in WA. They will not be flying above 8500 ft, they are more likely to be at 3000 ft..   Regardless, the future will demand that all aircraft be able to broadcast & receive their position.  It is a very small step  to have that information used to automate traffic avoidance in auto pilot that would benefit many more VFR pilots.

Just maybe  our regulators are looking ahead for once. If this is sensible future planning it would make it much more acceptable if we were  simply told this is going to happen in the future & we need your support & we need to start planning  now.

  13. I was in the Forbidden City in Beijing. sat down on a step about 2 metres from an elderly Chinese couple with a young girl about 5 years old. I guessed they were Grand parents taking the child out for a day. The little girl smiled at me & I returned the smile. In the next 5 minutes she had inched her way towards me until she was almost on my knee. She offered me a lolly from a tiny little pack. I accepted & shortly after she spoke to her guardians & they produced a tiny phone that had a camera. They wanted to take my picture with the little girl. After the picture was taken I gave the child the equivalent of about $5 to cover the lolly she had given me. The old man spoke to the child & she gave me the money back & would not accept it again.

One year later I was in the military museum in Hanoi. The museum has a floor dedicated to atrocities with photographs committed by the US forces on the civilian population. I read a report where John Kerry took his Seals into a village, lined up the dozen or so women, some with babies only one very old man way past being mistaken for a combattent. Murdered all of them, one lady had fallen on her baby to protect him & she was moved & the baby was bayoneted. They found a nine year old girl hiding in a storm water drain, (the yanks had a reputation for raping pre puberty children) hence she had been hidden in the drain. The little girl was bayoneted in the stomach . The picture of the murdered girl looked like an older sister to the one I had met in Beijing. I walked out of the museum with tears in my eyes & determined to publicise the atrocities when ever & where ever I could.

About 25 years later this crime came in front of an American Judge. Some of the Seals that were present confirmed that this had happened. There was no one charged over the murder of these innocent civilians. The US Military are on record to encourage the "softening up of the civilian population in the hope that it may shorten the conflict. They would have to be idiots to not realise that this is what causes terrorism. In many cases a terrorist is a very brave person seeking revenge for an atrocity committed on his family. Speaking for myself, were any force to murder my family I would be the first in line for an explosive vest or any other way I could get justice or take revenge.

Sadly  many people are so biased ,callous & racist that they accept this behaviour from their friends & yet criticise other nations  for minor misdemeanours.

There is much conclusive  proof on the internet, including transcripts of the trials that show barbaric treatment by US forces in all the wars they have inflicted on the world since 1950. There fear of communism has been the excuse to cause the death of over 6million people, there fear of Islam & support for Israel has probably been the cause of another 6 million deaths in the Middle East. The Australian Government grovels at the feet of idiots like Trump & spends billions of dollars on offensive weapons, suitable only to support the US in their quest for world dominance. For a much less investment we could develop our own defensive nuclear capability & be an independent force in Asia where we live & trade.

See also the information on the US use of Germ Warfare in Korean 1951/ 52, denied of course by the US.

  14.  Weaponised Drones are  a cowardly & very random means of killing. The word terrorism fits very well. Sad that the Rotax engine is being used for this purpose. The US is a country increasingly deploying them. If their civilian population was subject to their attack, can you imagine the outcry.

Picture some little computer geek 20,00Km from the scene guiding a missile to a target that he "thinks" may be the guy who has had the gall to wave 2 fingers at the US. Sadly same little runt will never be in the position to have the fire returned.

  15. Rotax insist on all rubber replacement @ 5 years. Not only rubber but jets also wear as does the needle. The most important is probably the diaphragm. I would not like to be flying with a Bing carb that had 20 years since overhaul. The diaphragm is the reason for the Rotax directive to replace the fuel pump @ 5 years. My a*se is worth more than a Bing overhaul kit.

  16. The citizens of every country are entitled to make changes to their political system. If that is by a civil war then that is of their own choice. This war was the same as the Korean war with the US interfering in the affairs of another country. They also lost that one & to this day are demonizing North Korea for their determination to develop weapons to defend them selves. There punishment for not copying the flawed US democratic system is the most stringent trade sanctions ever placed on any country. If I was a North Korean & subject to those sanctions & the constant threat from such a mighty & aggressive army I would be trying to produce the most potent weapons to defend myself. If Korea had been left to choose her own destination her own citizens would have modified the political system to reflect the changes that have occurred throughout the communist countries.

The people of a country will if given time sort out & become what they choose to be. It is not the role of the most powerful country to try & force their system on others. Our own country is following the aggressor in the hope that we will get protection from " the other side ". We should be developing our own nuclear defense system which would be a lot less costly than the inappropriate weapons we are being pushed to buy from the US. We are an Island, all we need are guided intercontinental missiles with nasty dirty nuclear warheads in big numbers to defend our selves from any invader. That includes the US who have for many years interfered in our political system.

  17. I have a daughter & that has made me very protective of young females. I was in a war museum in Ho Chi Minh City & came across (amongst other unbelievable brutality details by US forces) photographs of the 10 year old girl that was found hiding in a storm drain & bayoneted to death. For Vietnamese the rape of pre pubescent girls by US forces was a common occurrence. So mothers hid their young children. I had tears of sadness & shame when I left the museum.

The Commander on that day was a Bob Kerry. He was eventually charged & proven guilty. He was never convicted or paid any penalty . The US courts have said that in war every person can be considered a combatant. The US has caused more death & misery than any nation in history. They have done this to protect their flawed democratic system. The best example of that & that nations stupidity is their response to covid19.

They brag that their spies in the CIA knew of problems in a lab near Wuhan. That being the case they had more warning than any other country in the world. So why are they trying to shift the blame to the Chinese for their own inability to react to the crisis.

Last week I saw Vice President Pence visiting a hospital & bragging about not needing to wear a mask. Pence is the name & probably the value of his intelligence.

The Vietnam war was because the US feared the Vietnamese would become communists. All the Vietnamese ever wanted was their independence.

Australian leaders as they always do followed behind the US, hiding under their shirt tails. The same behavior is still happening with Scot Morrison supporting Trump. The position we are placing our selves in behind & under the US can only lead to us being covered in excrement. Attached is an excerpt from the US courts. If you want to follow this it will take some time as the US media & Google slaves go to some length to hide or distort the truth. We are also copying them in that respect as those concerned about our media freedom will know that the recent raid on journalists was to prevent the exposure of the murder of civilians by Australian forces in Afghanistan.

We are proud Aussie's & dont need to rely on, or copy the US.

  18. This is a proud ad for WA.

Gday Marty. I have traveled most of Australia, no disrespect but Adelaide/ Darwin via Alice is best done on a train where you are sleeping for at least 50% of the time.

Taking that route you are going to miss the best part of Australia & also the largest by far " WA". The Southwest is absolutely unique in flora, with the largest trees in the southern hemisphere. After the Nullabor, Esperance is a great stopover & there are fantastic new facilities at the Cape Le Grand site which is run by volunteers for the Dept Conservation. The Hopetoun National Park is a great area to visit on your way to Bremer Bay. Continue to Albany & dont miss Mt Clarence & the views from the memorial. Denmark is worth a stop over on the way to Walpole & the valley of the giants. Denmark has an active aviation club & a unique airfield on the top of a hill.

The drive through Karri forest to Manjimup is a high light to any holiday. Manjimup also has an active aero club where you may get a flight if your lucky. Not to be missed is the fire lookout on the top of a giant Karri tree South of Manjimup. Free to climb if your fit & game.

Drive from Manjimup to Bussleton vis Donny brook & see the fruit orchards. Bussleton has the incredible mile long jetty with a rail line & under water sea aquarium. If your not into walking take the tourist train. A little South is Yalingup with probably the best surf in Australia. The Caves are also a must see, with guided tours every hour. There are a number of amazing limestone caves in the area between Yalingup & Augusta.

Drive to Perth is an easy 2 hours from there.

Perth! the Swan river, got to be the best location of any City in the world. Lousy architecture with virtually no history. Kings Park makes up for that with stunning views across the Swan River. The beaches in WA are the cleanest & best & they stretch for over 10,000 Km . Heading North Lancelin is a must for the fishing & FWD tracks over the dunes & if your game through to Jurian Bay on dirt roads & beaches. Sample the Rock Lobsters at Lancelin, in good supply due to loss of sales to China.

Geralton is a good stop over, after there is a long drive North, but Shark bay is a must see. If you have the time the western most point of mainland Australia is Steep point. Managed by CALM & has amazing fishing. It is possible to catch Spanish Mackeral from the rocks off Steep Poit. Note FWD only. The view to Dirk Hartog across the North West passage from there is amazing. ( UNESCO's official listing of Shark Bay as a World Heritage Site see Wikipedia)

Next stop Carnarvon a lovely coastal town, famed for bananas & fishing.

Ex mouth is worth a visit, you can get to swim with the whale sharks at Ningaloo if your there at the right time of year.

Then through the mining towns, Dampier if you want to go game fishing. See the salt mines (lakes) the mountain of salt at Karatha. A short drive to Roeburme which was the main town in the North west in early days, better travel through & visit Cossack which has interesting old buildings & excellent fishing.

Broome is a good stop over on the long journey North to Darwin. Treat your Mrs to a pearl neck & visit the pearl farms & try the oysters.

Head North & stop at Halls Creek & say hello to the guy who looks after the airport, Take a flight over the Bungle Bungles. Next must see is Lake Argyle great camping & a good place to rest for a few days, before the drive to Darwin.

Give me a call if you get to Perth,I will be able to take you for a flight & show you that SABC has the best grass runway in Australia. See <https://www.sabc.org.au>

    Good luck in your travels.

  19. Hi all,

My family and I are packing up the Jayco and heading around much of this great country from June to October.

We plan to head west from Melbourne, through Adelaide, up to the top end via Alice, possibly over to the Kimberleys, across to northern QLD and down much of the east coast, possibly inland - haven't planned it all yet.

As an aircraft builder myself, I'd love to have a look at people's projects (ongoing or completed!!) and of course always happy to contribute towards fuel if anyone were to offer to take me flying....

Plus of course you guys know your local sights and attractions, probably flying over them quite often, so any advice on each region's "must-see" list would be fantastic.

If you'd like to meet up and show me your pride & joy, please reply or send a PM - can't access those right now because of the "oops" message but I'm sure Ian will have it fixed soon.

Thanks! Hope to see you on the road.

    Cheers, Marty
