  1. I remember a Coroner who said it would be desirable to stop motorcycles leaning over on corners, being a cause of accidents.Another famous statement from a judge about a 3 engined plane asking which wing had 2 engines on it.

"The engine was working hard flying into the strong wind" before the crash etc

Estimating height of aircraft from a non qualified witness, never seems to stand up in court, unless it flew under a bridge or such.

Any information is better than none, but we know how most reporters get nearly the whole lot wrong often. The best thing is a camera shot. Nev

Speaking on camera shots Nev maybe that's the go. Instead of black boxes for us they make it mandatory to have forward facing go-pro's hard wired into the system giving a full account of each flight. We could even fit interlock systems for those that are a little suspect so far as their drinking habits are concerned. The list is endless but I suppose then we would have to up the weight categories to be able to legally carry all the extra hardware.

  2. Why spoil your argument with the "godless" reference. The people who are the maddest are doing it in the name of their god. and you then immediately quote a "requirement" of god with reference to food for a particular group. as a case in point.???General comment on the magazine. Believe it or not there would be people with no modern IT facilities who are otherwise quite capable of flying planes. A lot of people still read and treasure books.

I'm not particularly critical of the board decision, but they should still mail out important operational stuff to carry out their responsibilities to ALL members. The Magazine is not FULL of important information but it has been the vehicle of most of it.. Nev

    Figure of speech Nev.

What I meant to say is that it is a real GOD Godless society not one of these used car type salesman from the Middle East.

  3. Don you really forgot to name the most important ingredient of progress cash, money, dinero and bucks, being whatever it is by any name you call it.

That is what mostly drives progress unfortunately to the detriment of some very good ideas that have endured time.

Everything has it's place in our very existence, some more so than others.

What will be do when there is no more oil paints and canvas with no more great artists, with artwork being undertaken by IT people using a digital pen.

I would rather eat real beef than synthetic meat and the list goes on and the argument gets wider and bigger.

We can't stand in the way of progress, yes I agree with that totally but I don't agree because a few want something different that, lets say the little luxuries that we now experience should be ripped from our very existence and replaced totally with something a lot of us don't want.

Why should the majority of us have the minorities wishes forced on us.

It's a Godless world gone mad.

Case in point, who wants halal food, I don't and I would think that some 20 million plus Australians don't want it either and yet that is forced on us by a minority.

  4. Timing will always be driven by contracted positions already in place. Given that contracts are always about certainty, for both parties, most don't have a cancellation for convenience clause and as such you let them run to full term, but you are very clear well in advance on what you will do when the contract ends, or when you choose to end it. In October last year we were in the latter stages of an existing contract.WRT to the $40 thing...that might well have been true at the time it was said but I hold no expectation that it will still be the case next year, or the year after etc... RAAus's 10,000 mags per month is tiny compared to the print shops total monthly print, but that monthly print is shrinking every month driving up the costs for those that are still printed....If we as an example accept a $40 across the board increase then I'll bet we are back for a larger than CPI increase in 12 months time for the entire membership. That is equally the case for those that choose to buy paper now IMHO, but at the end of the day it is an individuals determination as to what per paper magazine price they are prepared to accept.... for those that are happy to go digital the whole long term unsustainable paper printing thing becomes a non issue now and forever.

Being angry with the board for taking a position of sustainability where the circumstances of that sustainability issue are whole of community sized and not just RAAus related is imho unfair on the board. We could ignore it, stick head in sand and then we'd be just the same as the last board that we caned for sticking their head in the sand! I get that you (broad you, not any poster specifically) would prefer to receive paper, just like you would probably prefer that milk and bread were still delivered to your front door by the milko and the baker each morning, but wishing it were so wont undo the inevitable change that has and is happening. It is what it is people!

    Andy

It's a pity Andy that most of those (government and individuals) who tried to stop the executions in Indonesia didn't have your slant on the situation.

That is, what is inevitable will happen and can't be changed. So therefore, it follows doesn't it, that those with the reigns who have a mind set whether good or bad won't be diverted from their course or purpose. I suppose that's why we have elections in politics so if the majority view is against the mind set of the ones holding the reigns, the ones holding the reigns at the time can be toppled.

  5. rick-p, surely you are not now suggesting the issue is it took too long for the digital magazine to be implemented?I look forward to seeing your motion at the AGM regarding providing members "free" magazines and a fee rise of $90.

I'm not suggesting anything just making an observation.

What one looks forward to is not always that which one gets and I have absolutely no intention putting any motion before the Board.

I don't really care how much the membership fee is or what the magazine costs I only care in matters of fairness and the retention of something tangible.

If we as members need to pay more in fees to guarantee the viability of our organisation then so be it. Compared to other interest, sporting and Motorsport organisations we get off cheap.Given the fact that the majority of aviators in this country are aged over sixty it's no wonder that there is such resistance to move away from print media. If you need something to read in the dunny buy the Weekly Times.

It's so nice to see that you feel that our association magazine is in the same category as toilet reading material because I think that most of the members feel that it is usually a good read not mater where you choose to read it.

Obviously you haven't got the maturity to appreciate the difference between the real thing and a placebo which exactly is what a digital book or publication is.

I really feel sorry for our next generation not being able to savour the feel of real paper in their hands.

I suppose you will advocate for the introduction at some time digital toilet paper, that will be most interesting I must say.

  6. I didn't side-step anything Andy I just packed up my toys and left because I felt that the discussion had got to a point where it, regardless of what you and I said, was not really going anywhere. I have seen enough conflict over the years that was in respect of serious and life threatening issues and therefore, I don't feel that squabbling over a very low grade issue is appropriate on this forum. My sincere apologises to those of you I have offended but my question or point still remains unanswered. I will leave this topic with a parting comment/ observation/ question to wit:- how is it that the latest magazine has in it an article on the results of a board decision in respect of the magazine when the magazine as I understand it was proof read and printed prior to the recent General Meeting? The magazine also contains the survey taken with respect to a survey as to who prefers hardcopy as opposed to digital. We are not talking cost here we are talking methodology or format of the delivery of our magazine.

  7. Rick that's just a bunch of words that's long on buzzzzzzzz and very short on any real content......1) What Due Process?

    2) Where is it defined as process that should be followed, presumably in our constitution or perhaps under legislation? If so, what and where?

    3) Assuming you can answer 2) How do you know as fact that it wasn't followed?

We are not talking forests, or trees or mazes or carts or horses or freedom of speech or any other waffle you care to pack around the crap your serving up....could it simply be that at the end of the day you simply don't like the decision made? If so that's Ok and you're well within your rights to say that and I welcome it. Just don't try and repackage it as something it isn't! What you have posted to me looks like a turd, smells like a turd and your trying to sell it with waffle words as "a rose by any other name"....

Seems to me that you are right! There are definitely deceptive practises at play! Happy to withdraw that statement of perception on my behalf if you can offer up a fact or 2 to the 3 questions above... and just as a stretch target...if you find yourself feeling the need to put up or shut up....then feel free to answer the original question "What deceptive practises" WRT the magazine decision, have the board and staff of RAAus applied to the membership?

Well I never! I'm certainly not going to lower myself to gutter tactics and name calling, that belongs only in the school yard or question time in the ACT.

It certainly is very unbecoming of a board member.

I will not pursue this matter any further particularly on that level of a very inappropriate rant.

I will leave you with the words 'proper governance' and thereafter rest my case.

  8. If people can't see the forest for the trees it's not up to me to guide them through the maze. I have pointed out anomalies and it's up to those who want to prove or disprove my observations to review the available material. That is the latest magazine and a few of the magazines prior to the latest as they tell the whole story. It's all a matter of timing as to what's actually happened and the decision having been made before due process had been followed. The cart before the horse, so to speak. I have made valid comments and I will be damned if will apologise to anyone. Freedom of speech is still alive in this country.

  9. And all this maybe is off topic but OMG how many times has the off topic situation occurred on these forums. Case in point, the death of a very good friend of mine and all people could do was talk about was ELT's etc. That discussion was totally irrelevant to the original topic, it should have come under a safety thread not the death of a mate with everyone offering their 2 bob's worth on how it happened and how it could have been avoided or whatever by an ELT or some such like device.

  10. One needs to contemplate all the facts. The powers to be had prior to the relevant meeting already made their minds up to the taking the hard copy version of the magazine out of the equation unless paid for separately to that of the membership fee. They just hadn't decided on a figure as at the time of the relevant meeting. The decision had been made but no cost had been allocated or agreed on. Evidence, to wit, the latest magazine says it all. You can draw your own conclusions after reviewing the printed story. I'm not a fan of deceptive practices.

  11. No you are reading it completely wrong. You don't have to, but you can choose to if you want. Also note that there are 12 issues per year now not the 11 of previous year ends.If you choose not to pay for the printing and post then you'll get all 12 copies as a PDF file

    Andy

Well you have read my question incorrectly, it would appear that if we want the printed copy ie; magazine then we HAVE to pay for it. Yes you have a choice but it doesn't really count when one has to pay for what they have been getting for decades, the price being included in the membership. What will happen is that the hard copy distribution will go down and because of this, the per copy price will creep up due to a lower circulation in that format.

When one is given a chalk and cheese choice it's quite obvious which way most will choose to go, that is hardly good deal.

In fact it may even border on being a deceptive practice under the Trade Practices legislation.

    A con in other words.

    It speaks for itself!

  12. I will give everyone a hint, go and enrol at University and spend the next 4-6yrs getting a Masters or Phd in law then spend 30 years plus practising law and you may be in a position of knowing a majority of the answers to your queries. One doesn't go to the Butcher to get his hair cut, that of course is not the case if you go to Stephan!

  13. I agree with Frank...RAAus membership costs $210 a year...Lawyer costs...$800 per hour......likely hours spent.......you guess but many more than in a working day...seems to me that a victory in law is almost certainly a complete disaster financially.......and victory imho is no sure thing...especially as CASA have the ability should they choose to, of bankrupting you before you get to declare victory in law, which of course means you will never declare victory in law..........So, good to talk about....a disaster to actually do...... Pretty much the same reality for an alternate RAAO......

I've been hearing for ages about MB's ELAAA but an ABN search yesterday (ELAAA cant exist without an ABN and actually function as a business...which is sort a prerequisite to be an RAAO) shows again that it is still doesn't seem to exist.......

I have no idea where you get your information from but you must know some damn dear lawyers.

Also what or who is MB's?
